Xone: DB4- the official unofficial thread

(former thread title Xone: DB4- convince me not to sell off my possessions and drain my bank account)

I mean it's just a mixer, nothing I should sell my S4 and some other expensive possessions for and drain my bank account completely for... right?

I am having a hard time with this decision. I know it won't make me a better DJ, yet it gives me the urge to make irrational spending decisions. Please talk me out of it.

Pretty substantial control; it's a really well thought out tsi. I have a half dozen midi controllers but with the controls in this tsi they're all mostly redundant. Though I still prefer doing song selection on the X1 controls and of course the VCI-100 when I want to use me some jog wheels.

Dew eet!
k2s to my understanding won't be out for a while anyway. I would use a keyboard over a DB2 and x controller than pry the DB4 from my hands.

Cool the more I am hearing about the db4 the more I am swaying that way and if you can use the tsi thats better and I can add a x1 or k2 later.

I run it but I also use X1s and prefer the X1 buttons.

It gives you enough control that you could DJ with just a DB4 on 4 decks and never touch your laptop.

DB4.

I would never buy a DB2- no xone filters (not even one like the 42 had, wtf?) or loopers, no thank you. Plus short meters, no independently switchable EQs, and 2fx units in no way justifies the price saving for me and you are left with a mixer that is severely handicapped when you consider what the db4 offers.

I mean even the K2s aren't necessary with a db4 when you have an x1 or even mixarchitekts .tsi, you really don't need any of the knobs unless you want control of all traktor fx units but once you use db4 effects traktor's become obsolete.

really I could live with everything on the DB2 except no xone filters. If there was one like the 42 had I would say it is a good choice but none is a deal breaker for me.

The thing that attracted me about the 900 was the quantized loops/effects via the Pro DJ Link between the mixer and players (I use this at home instead of consistently updating a jump drive).
I was at guitar center in NY today and I was playing around on the DJM-2000 there and trying out the pioneer effects. I was literally laughing out loud to myself and shaking my head at just how bad and cheesy the pioneer effects all sound compared to the DB4.

I was cringing at some of them and that mixer is the same price as a DB4 and the DB4 has 4 dedicated fx units, 4 loopers, and 2 filter banks. I believe flanger is a pretty cheesy and bad sounding effect and even the flangers on the DB4 sound pretty good.

Can your DB4 duplicate that quantized-ability because the BPM detection is so spot on? The vids I've seen make it seem so.

Obviously the DB4 doesn't read Rekordbox-quantized tracks like the 900nexus, but that BPM detection accuracy and the examples I've seen on YouTube make it seem like you could replicate the end result (synced beat samples) simply because the auto-BPM detection is tits. Make sense?

I don't believe that there are any issues, because A&H released drivers for 10.7 (Mac OS X Lion) on their website!

Any issues with the soundcard driver or anything before I upgrade?

Check you manual, all output do not have the same gain structure
Out +4DBu
Mono, Aux & booth : -2DBu
It's 6DB quieter... which is half the signal

and finally
Record Out: -10DBv

Again it's all standard level. I would measure it for curiosity sake with and without load maybe there's something weird inside... or you mismatch the out/in impedance between your gear somewhere.
Dorie Scelzo
25.12.2011
Weird. When I've run my 62 into basically anything it appears that the output meter is running hot compared to the input meter on basically anything.
Lisa Lochotzki
25.12.2011
On the 92, Out 1, Out 2 and Booth do not have the same output gain. But at 0DB on the meter and gain set to max on Out 1, it give a bit above the standard +4DBu, which is good enough to clip the input of most Eq/processor. And you still have plenty headroom left.

It doesn't need to be louder than this. I really believe it's a deliberate decision. In fact I prefer this point of view VS another mixer who can give MORE juice AND clip any Eq, Processor, Limiter input preamp THEN give distortion BEFORE the amp.

Well my 2 cents.
Dorie Scelzo
25.12.2011
Interesting. I might have gotten the specs wrong, but the output level is actually what I was talking about. It outputs a really low level compared to everything else I've tried. It's possible that I assumed it was dBV and then promptly forgot to look it up.
Lisa Lochotzki
25.12.2011
Let's check the input meter on a XONE:92.

Conditions:
Input gain set to maximum = 10DBu as per their specifications
Injecting 1KHz tone @-10DBu

So we can expect to see a 0DB on the input meter huh? And indeed spot on

Pity the output meter are pre-fader on the 92 and both output don't have the same gain structure (as per the manual) but I would say they're spot on as well.
Lisa Lochotzki
25.12.2011
Probably they never felt the need to write which reference they're using
DBv or DBu. High likely it's DBu, it's the standard... and 0DBu is 0.775 Volt NOT 1V.
Dorie Scelzo
25.12.2011
No, in that their meters are labeled wrong. 0dB on the xone:22, 34, 42, 62, and 92 is not actually 1 Volt as it should be. They intentionally mis-labeled their meters to try and trick DJs into mixing properly.

They really don't have much headroom

How much did you play with the reverbs? There are like 20 of them and if you play with all the settings Im sure they will blow you away.

The reverbs and delays are truly incredible sounding and blow traktor and every other DJ effect I've heard away. Better than any VST I've heard too.
