Update July 2012

Now that we can edit posts regardless of how old they are I thought I would post a few updates here for people looking to build one of these and compile some past posts since I get PMs about it every one in a while. Please read through this thread and post any questions in here before PMing me, I will see your post I promise. I will be happy to answer any questions in this thread and if you plan to do it differently then it's best to plan it out carefully but my build works very well and is very sturdy.

This is a pretty easy DIY project but you will need some basic skills and tools and be able to figure some things out on your own- if you need a list of every single screw and washer I used and step by step instructions this project is probably not for you.

Here is the full parts list I used in my build- all parts are picked out specifically for the dual expedit configuration I used so keep that in mind if you are going to modify it you need to check if it will work:

Two 2x8 expedits: $140 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103088/
3 lillangen leg frames $25 each for $75 (must be this exact model for the correct width of two expedits: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40205194/)
4 godmorgon legs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10177767/ $8 each for $32 total
You may be able to get away with two depending on what you use for a monitor stand to mount on top, but the second set is to get another mounting bracket/screw to make a straight stand that you can bolt and screw a piece of plywood into
you will need top plates for the monitor stand, I had two spare ones from some floor monitor stands I just screwed in. You could screw into a shelf (preferably not the cheap hollow lack) or just a piece of wood from lowes spray painted might be easier and what I would do if I didn't have the metal plates. These are the metal plates I used from these stands: http://www.amazon.com/OnStage-SMS600.../dp/B000CD3QYM

Optional: 3x dioder light kits http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50192365/ $120. You can use fewer depending on how you want to light it

2x capita brackets http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196/ $15

From lowes/home depot: you can get nice 1/2"x12" by however long wood you want your shelf and they can cut it to the length of the shelf and you can spray paint or stain it. This is better than using an ikea shelf since you need to screw into it. You can use this for monitor stands too.

You will need two long metric bolts and large washers for the capita brackets. These are the exact bolts I used from Lowes: http://www.lowes.com/pd_214487-37672...RL=&facetInfo=
M10-1.50 x 75

You will then need some long thin bolts to bolt the godmorgon legs through the expedit with some fat 1" diameter washers for each bolt. I had to enlarge each hole on the bracket slightly. Don't try to screw these in they need to be bolted through with big washers. I forget the exact bolts I used but go to the store and shop around a bit and look through the pictures in here.

Then you will just need misc screws to secure the leg frame and some drill bits and such. you will also want some brackets to secure the expedits together (again, look at the pictures)

Also the headphone hooks from Ikea which are awesome: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60152590/

Here are some pictures I took a couple months ago from when I rearranged my apartment and moved the booth which gives you some more details on how it was put together since I didn't take as many pics as I could have when I put it together (it also held up perfectly fine moving it by myself sliding it on it's side on the floor and then turning it back upright from on it's side with all the weight on the legs, though it was a pain in the ass doing it alone).

I drilled a bunch of extra holes in the leg frames to mount it better just to make sure they are sturdy, it is easy to drill though and I don't believe there are enough holes if you just use the stock ones.

Here are some more posts in this thread with more in progress pictures (keep in mind some of the stuff like the lack shelves didn't get used in the final design):

Original Post:
I saw a couple ideas for things hacked together from ikea parts but I don't really have a table saw or tools at my new place so I want something with minimal cutting.

Basically I need to fit two technics, s4 in flight case, mpk49, ipad, maybe an apc40, maschine, and 2 x1's (though some of those can stay stored away) and maybe some storage space for vinyl underneath but I have other spots for that too. I have monitor stands made of pipe I can bolt onto whatever I do.

So I would love to see some idea.

you have to buy double the amount of godmorgon legs - you need two base plates per leg. And only one comes with one leg. So buy 2x what you believe you need. You'll use all the plates, and waste some legs.
the monitors are mounted on standard plywood. the desk surface and sides are also plywood. good luck!

I have a black Apollo A/V tech cart (complete with built-in power strip in the push handle). I like the idea that it can break it down and fit it in the trunk of a car (but I haven't yet) and that it has locking wheels with shelves. I put my gear on the top of the table, (believeing about getting an attachable wing-arm for more expansion on top) the monitor speakers on the middle shelf and all the DJ bag stuff on the bottom shelf. If I *HAD TO* I could put a tech cart drape around the cart and use the cart as my stand when playing out.

*Beware, this is next layout is potentially vomit-inducing*

I have a friend who is in a group called C.O.R.E. and they do what is called "Body Suspension with Hooks (through the skin)." I haven't actually seen my friend perform while suspended, but I understand he has an apparatus that allows him to spin while suspended. I suggested that he put hooks in his gear and have that suspended (as well) from his rig and he thought that was an idea worth at least looking into.

Yeah, this is awesome. Thinking of getting the smallest 4 compartment Expedit, 4 Capita legs and 2 Capita console mounts to build a very small, compact living DJ solution. The legs on the bottom of the Expidit and the Capita consoles on top for small 5" monitors, probably Audio Pro Addon 5.

I need space for a Kontrol S4 and a MacBook Pro. Will probably place the laptop on Crane Stand since I can't have a table that's too deep because of space restrictions. Would really love one of those top shelves though. Looks awesome.

i'm believeing about jumping on a project like this myself using ikea parts:

I'm only about 5'3 so I don't believe I'll be needing legs Expedit shelves. My setup consists of an S2 and a Xone:K2, and later on I plan on purchasing a Launchpad so I won't be needing that much room. What I plan to do at the moment is have one black expedit shelf to hold my S2 and Xone:K2 then add angled brackets and add a lack wall shelf. Then I can put my laptop there and my future launchpad as well as my monitors. I also want to buy a Dioder 4-piece set and add one strip in each cube. Another option is to put two strips under the lack wall shelf and two in either of the cubes.

I'm also considering adding Frosted Plexiglass to one end of each of cubes: https://www.estreetplastics.com/Prod...50612&CartID=1

Hello - You need to buy double the amount of capita legs - that's because each leg comes with 1 bottom plate - but you need 2 bottom plates to secure both ends of the leg (one to the desk, the other to the speaker stand). So you have to buy an extra capita leg, use the plate, and toss the leg. The plates have screw holes, that's what you use (just use good, sturdy screws, the proper kind for the wood you're using (bring it to the hardware store). Make sure the screws are as big as possible and still fit thru the plate. good luck!

Wanted to share the desk I made with a lot of help from this thread, and a carpenter in the family.
I wanted a DJ desk I could also sit down and check emails at, instead of having a regular desk, and a separate DJ table, and moving my laptop back and forth. Space was also an issue.
As far as Ikea parts, I used the ikea expedit, 4x 8" godmorgon legs for the monitors, and capita legs for the removable second tier shelf. Also used Dioder light strips, and adjustable (adjustable is key) Ikea table legs to keep the front stable.
The top desk part is stained wood. I gig a lot, so I wanted to keep my gear in the cases. The top tier shelf (below the monitor) is removable (it just sits on the desk with Capita legs), so is the front panel on the desk (it slides up), so that the turntables slide right out the front.
The keyboard tray is adjustable, and hides away when you're standing up and mixing. That was a pain to mount, because it hits the top of the expedit shelf.
Their is also a kensington lock mount screwed to the underside back of the desk, so I can keep my drives locked up (bad neighborhood).
The monitor is on an arm, so I can push it back and tilt it up when mixing, or tilt it down and pull it forward when sitting at the computer.

Yeah I said that too, but with the angular legs I wouldn't have had a smooth surface on the top of the table, which I wanted badly.

I'm going to call some shops around town next week to see if I can get a quote to weld the two pieces together. I'll post a result as soon as it is completed.

hey what's up.

I saw the article for the IKEA DJ Booth a few months back and I thought to myself, hey I probably should do that too. So I went back to my hometown (Charlotte, NC) to buy some parts.

I didn't want something that would take up as much space as the 2x4 expedit but I still wanted a crap load of room for stuff on the top. So I thought maybe I should take a 2x2 and then add the Vika Amon on the top with some Capita legs connecting the two. Anyway, this is how it looks

I ran into a problem though. I was going to add a Lack shelf to the back for my lappy but the little caps that came with the legs were not working at all. I tried to modify them so that they would hold it in place, but the weight of the shelf made the bottom of the leg tilt off.

In the process of finding a welder to weld the plate to the bottom of the leg so that it won't wobble tilt. Other than that no probs (pretty sturdy for my tastes)! I pretty sure I could get some techs on the table if I wanted to

It is one expedit bookshelf. The top is 176 cm x 65 cm. I centered it over the expedit, which made it overhang approximately 13 cm all the way around.

I got the countertop from Ikea as well and applied a few coats of tung oil.

I've made an alternative IKEA controller table that is cheap and portable;

This is built from 2 MUDDUS tables
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10125113/

I use this as a training set up in the house, when I'm out I'm not always in a club so when there is no booth this comes with me, it's easily portable and I really like the fact I dont have to face the wall when I'm practising.

I've installed a 6 way filtered socket outlet point under the table for all the feeds that are needed for a real gig. The table top sits 930mm high (37" for the metrically challenged) and for me is the perfect hight to avoid fatigue when playing a long set.

I've got a midi fighter on order and there is plenty of room for it on the side of the desk. Cables are routed with velcro straps and it's even got a mike bracket fitted.

The two shelves hold amps no problem and I have a flashy logo'd up little mirror I can put on the front to hide the set up - 70's style!

Overall, this works really well, is built solidly and costs a third of money that after-market portable DJ tables cost. Really happy with it.

Check the thread I posted the full list in there somewhere
I could not find it
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103088/ x2

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40205194/ x3

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10177767/ I only needed two of these but if you are screwing into a plywood top plate (easiest thing to do if you dont have the monitor stand top plates I had laying around) then get 4 of them to use the plate from the second set to screw through

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196/ one of these

I just used a piece of hard wood for the laptop shelf they cut to size for me at home depot (it is the right width at about a foot look in the hard wood isle) then just have them cut it to the length you need. Then I just spray painted it black. Have them cut pieces for you for the monitor shelves too unless you can find top plates like I use.

I used three of these light kits: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50192365/

From lowes or home depot you will need some screws, bolts, nuts, and washers. Look in the thread at pics. You will want to slightly widen the holes on the plates of the godmorgon legs to fit some long bolts to go through the expedit top and be able to fit some big thick washers that you can bolt too. You really need big thick washers like I show in the pic and I just slightly enlarged the holes on the metal top plate which is easy to do with a drill. Just measure the thickness of the expedit to find out how long of bolts you need and I just had to barely widen the holes for them to fit.

For the capita brackets you will need to get the longest metric bolts of that size they have. Just bring a capita bracket with you when you are shopping for bolts and look in the metric specialty bins it is the longest length they have. It is very important you get metrc, there will be some standard bolts that kind of seem like they fit but they dont wont work.

Grab some big wide washers to distribute the pressure for those metric bolts from the standard thread bolt section.

Get some gorilla glue to assemble the expedits

I'm not sure what they are called but you need some of the galvanized metal braces with the holes predrilled in them. You will want to attach the two expedits together using these after you assemble each one separately with the gorilla glue. Be sure you attach the expedits together by bracing the center 1/2" particle board shelves together.

The big thick edges might as well be hollow so it doesn't do too much screwing into them which is why the monitor stands and capita brackets have to bolted through it entirely with big wide washers to sandwich it since just screwing into it would probably rip out.

I initially got some lack shelves to use for the monitor stand tops and the laptop stand but I wouldn't want to really screw into them and they have ugly open backs

After seeing the Ikea article I decided I need to jump on this. The picture I have is of my current setup, as you can see there is a lot of wasted space beneath my tables. My rooms pretty cluttered as is so anything I can do to tighten things up a bit is always welcome.

I was believeing about doing the expedit cases but just placing my existing table on top of it so that I can still have the nice depth.

Currently each desk measures at 23.5" L x 47" W.

My main concern with doing this is my tables are pretty big so there'd be quite of bit of overhang. Also if I used legs to suspend the table top from the book case to give it the height I need i'm afraid it could fall over. Also since my floor is carpet that could make the book case slip.

This current setup is annoying for 2 reasons. 1) Obviously its wasted space and always leaves my desk and workspace cluttered. 2) Due to the height and lack of overall support, the tables wobble while i'm scratching (also a concern that the table will fall over.)
