The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

so... been scouting 1/2step a bit.. made some playlists, merged them up with my "deep" tunes and voila: when i watched Blu Mar Ten play out i noticed that at least one third of tunes he had played was my regulars... i was sooo happy.

The set was mixture of 2-3 deep tunes (Data, Spectrasoul, break, and the likes) and then 2-3 1/2step tunes (did not recognize much, though), rinse and repeat XD, altogether it felt like they had been scouting my playlist for past two months (excluding 1/2step stuff obv), haha.

Yeah the Blu Mar Ten album is dooope, planning on picking it up digitally & the vinyl. Above Words is such a slick tune.

Non-Plus is wicked, dont forget Exit (dBridge's label) :P

Darkestral is a well mean label, but much of it is too deep/abstract for me to play out (xcept layered over other stuff when using ableton stz).

Havnt heard of Rockwell, will have to check them.

QFT.

I've been raving about the 1/2-step thing for years now. Its te fucking biz, the Space of dubstep but with more pace.

<3 the Club Autonomic vibe, but sometimes its a bit too mellow for a dancefloor. In terms of that sound theres dBridge, Instra:Mental, ASC & a New Zealand producer called Consequence who is siiic, but also releases from Scuba, Skream & other dubstep guys stepping up bpms. The Upbeats have a few tunes in this vibe as well, Bones is doooope!

In terms of the heavier stuff Amit has been doing it for years, but theres also the likes of Donny (On the Gash/Darkcore tip) & Randomer (Heavier tech stz) who rep the halfstep. Theres other as well I just forget thier names.

Easy on the E there, son!

But to be honest, I do believe 2009 was a good year for DnB.
Even though the releases were not that heavy, myself and I know quite some other D&B- addicts were swaying to other genres to fill our tunage-need, the genre came to realise that it needs to fall back to the roots.
There are certain rising new elements, and also some veterans who are picking up yee olde guantlets to once again lift the mighty tanckard to sound in the tunes of the new era of Drum & Bass.

Lol!!!

I cringed at myself for about a month after. I seem to do it at every rave I go to, it's now become anoying. Last week I went up to Dbridge after 10 pints and told him wonder where was the best single of 2009...luckly amongst the slurs coming out of my mouth it came accross less like I wanted to suck him off.

PS

DNB is not dead if anything it has just started again, after a few years of terrible jump up it now has found its soul again. 2009 was in my opinion the best year for dnb therefore proving it still is growin, evolving and has more to give. Bring on 2010!

DnB is now popular in some parts of Australia and New Zealand. Just ask Bento or Midi Fiddler to confirm this. Dunno about that B33, next time you're back home, gotta take u into LA where DnB is still alive and thriving. Machete's Junglist Platoon puts on Respect every Thursday which is the longest running American DnB weekly (10 years going strong), Timeless is another massive monthly event in the valley, DnB stages at all the Insomniac, Go, and Giant massives have such a huge turn out every time. And Los Angeles is now home to the likes of Gridlok, Evol Intent, Urban Assault, Atlantic Connection, Tech Itch, and a whole slew of up and comers. Not to mention the San Diego crew which has been doing it big for years now. Drum n Bass is far from dead in southern california so in turn, you can't really say the proof is in the pudding. Also, with real dnb innovators like Netsky, Subwave, Commix, Shapeshifter, and on the other side of the spectrum, Nasty Genius, Aeph, Subsonik, and of course Spor, the sound has continued to evolve into the myriad of emotional soundscapes we have today. Granted, it may not be as popular as House, but there is no reason to call for a funeral dirge when the scene still commands as much attention as it does in the entertainment capitol of the world.

PHAT 10: BSE slammed it and Spor absolutely slammed it, Pendulum sucked right down to their matching jackets, one of my chick friends went home with maldini from Bad Company, TuTu from Cuba is a douche, Louie from the roast crew pulled a chick from the front of the stage whilst he was back stage, just pretty much did the point manouveur, Hype showed that yes he is human and even pro DJ's make mistakes by trainsmashing two tunes quite epically, wicked set by him none the less, and for the people flying over the campsite in microlites when I was trying to sleep after a very hard rinse, fuck you microlites are gay!!!! All in all phat was grand although I'm still paying for it, Ohhh and at one stage I lost the feeling in my hands for three or so hours, quite funny really, couldn't roll ciggies, or hold onto drinks, I can't quite remember what part of the nite I thought it was a good idea to consume all of my stash but hey it was my 10yr celebration of falling in love with the DnB sound, thanks Konflict for showing me the light back at Gathering 2000

yeah Phlendulum were so bad, I also caught their DJ set 4ish years ago when hold your colour was released, back then I didnt DJ so while I thought the set was nothing special I missed most errors, then I saw them live a year ago and that was literally the worst gig of my life, and then to fuck up that bad at Phat as the headliner is just disrespectful, kinda like they believe Phat campers are your usual critters.

There only saving grace was the fact I was so leathered by that stage they could have put on the news and I would have danced to it.

Let me start by saying I LOVE Drum n Bass. I started listening to jungle back in the mid to late 90s when I was in high school. I watched it evolve into what it is today.

With that said, the creativity in DNB has been absent for quite some time. It happens with any genre though. It seems like electronic music has a certain thing about it, where a couple people come up with something clever during the same time frame, and it gets beaten to death by everybody that follows.

Subgenres evolve<?> out of those ideas. Hell! record labels start from those ideas. In the end what you're left with are faceless productions. I can understand how people might resign themselves to a certain subgenre of dnb, but to believe you're contributing to the genre by simply adding more of the same to what desperately needs innovation seems a bit pointless. I feel like the only evolution drum and bass has seen in the past decade has only been the evolution of the tools being used, not the evolution of ideas by the producers using those tools. There are of course exceptions, but I feel like that playful spirit of yore where producers took chances are no longer here in regards to drum and bass.

The other thing I don't like is that much like hiphop, drum and bass is seen as a territorial accomplishment by those who have done something with it. Even people who pioneered drum and bass are too concerned with defending their territory to pass the torch onto new talent. The same people who created and defined it have killed it.

I can understand people who enjoy dnb wanting to distance themselves from candy kids in the rave scene wanking off on trance. That's why we had our lil smoke filled rooms off to the side in those massive warehouses. We just need to be less arrogant towards others, especially people cut from the same cloth.

Overall, there will always be a need for electronic music in the high bpms. It might not go K-S--KS- anymore, but we coulda used alot more clever ideas ages ago. Right now Dubstep is a breeding ground for creativity. I stress it when I say "RIGHT NOW". Dnb was in the same spot when it started asserting itself as a different animal from jungle awhile back. Dubstep will go the way of the dinosaur too, if it grabs the same nasty habits from dnb.
