The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

If you listen to dnb tracks, elements don't really fade in and fade out at all like with other genres of music out there - well you could probably find more chilled dnb that does this but certainly not with the intense techy stuff you guys know i like to mix

The elements kinda just jump in and jump out, so i keep to that kinda style with my mixing so it sounds consistent with the tracks i play. It makes things a bit harder cause you cant feel your way up to the right volume, you pretty much gotta get it right in your headphones to start with then slam the cross-fader quickly into the middle.

Whatever works though, we all got our own style of doing things

I get the best results with hard cuts into tracks with the volume fader already most of the way up - thats not to say you cant have a long mix between tracks, its just that i find it sounds best when you cut in the tracks hard and fast.
i agree, i cut sharp and hard when performing, but "studio" mixes i do the other way around.

Good point. Actualy i believe it's not all that bad with this sound... it's like with dubstep, if you wanna rock the dancefloor, you gotta slam the tune.. no fancy EQing and shit, just plain ol' slam it, and have MC to help you out. Then it works...

best part is usualy when audience has no idea if they are listening to dubstep or DnB , then you slam deep DnB track (like that Oak - Tsunami, or Rockwell - Underpass) to set them straight.

Cool - we just started a similar evening at our favourite wine & tapas bar - had our first a month ago - and our second this weekend. Very good excuse to play those tunes which just dont work on the d floor

Yezzir, we've actually got our 1st 12" out now on Promo (white label, only 100 pressed, sold out already), which has Axiom on one side, then Inside Info, Kiro, & 59Crime on the flip.

AR002, our 2nd 12", has Task Horizon (Ghost In The Shell 2.0), and Cativo - Evil Has No Boundaries [Neonlight Rmx] on it. Release date is TBA on that one.

Massive support on both from the likes of Ed Rush, Mayhem, Prolix, C4C, Camo & Krooked, Audio, and many more. Will defo be posting up that "dnb isn't dead" when the full release is out on AR001 here though

Xilent, Imprintz, and Kloe should be names on the lips of every neurofunk Dnb enthusiast! Massive collaboration between these 3! These producers tear down the boundaries between France and the UK to bring us 2 insane Drum n' Bass tunes, with massive support from some of the most respected names in dnb!

Xilent (Eric) is a young dnb producer, originally from Poland. He produced his first bits at the young age of 9, when he was introduced to the Propellerhead Rebirth RB-338 synth set. He experimented with many genres including techno, breakbeat, and finally found his place in the dnb genre. Xilent's a big up'n'comer to keep your ears out for, with support from the likes of John B's "Beta Recordings", and massive features. In 2009, his tune "Terminal" was rated as "one of the biggest tracks of 2009" and even a "drum'n'bass anthem" (TID)

Imprintz & Kloe make a killer team as well, and have turned heads with their killer sounds and unique engineering. Always looking for a new approach to production, these 2 are pushing the boundaries of dnb! You can catch tunes from this duo outside of the dnb genre as well, for some proper dancefloor smashers!

Currently out now on Ammunition's 40th Digital installment, Xilent, Imprintz & Kloe's "Unity" EP! 2 Insane tunes, dancefloor proven, and receiving huge support from some of the most respected names in drum n' bass!
