The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?) Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead. We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already. Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade. With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB. Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!" If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles? No, kill your idols instead! There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past. How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep? Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are. There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing. Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us. Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996! | |

Xavier Emanuels 08.05.2010 | If you listen to dnb tracks, elements don't really fade in and fade out at all like with other genres of music out there - well you could probably find more chilled dnb that does this but certainly not with the intense techy stuff you guys know i like to mix The elements kinda just jump in and jump out, so i keep to that kinda style with my mixing so it sounds consistent with the tracks i play. It makes things a bit harder cause you cant feel your way up to the right volume, you pretty much gotta get it right in your headphones to start with then slam the cross-fader quickly into the middle. Whatever works though, we all got our own style of doing things |

Xavier Emanuels 07.05.2010 | I find with dnb it doesnt lend itself very well to slow long drawn out mixes where you slowly etch the volume fader up - well not with my mixing style anyway. I get the best results with hard cuts into tracks with the volume fader already most of the way up - thats not to say you cant have a long mix between tracks, its just that i find it sounds best when you cut in the tracks hard and fast. |
Tianna Laguerre 05.05.2010 | Good point. Actualy i believe it's not all that bad with this sound... it's like with dubstep, if you wanna rock the dancefloor, you gotta slam the tune.. no fancy EQing and shit, just plain ol' slam it, and have MC to help you out. Then it works... best part is usualy when audience has no idea if they are listening to dubstep or DnB , then you slam deep DnB track (like that Oak - Tsunami, or Rockwell - Underpass) to set them straight. |
Adolf Hit 04.05.2010 | Cool - we just started a similar evening at our favourite wine & tapas bar - had our first a month ago - and our second this weekend. Very good excuse to play those tunes which just dont work on the d floor |
