The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

Thats like waiting for the return of Jesus.... aint going to happen. :P

<3 BC . Cant wait to see them @ Phat10 (along with Spor, Hype, Markey, BSE, Upbeats, Consiquence, SoM + all the dubstep: Mala, Kryptic Minds, Benga, Skream, Distance) Eeeeepic.

And the Dubstep ting although a bandwagon for many of the commercial DnB types (& electro types now) is it most definitely a thing in its own right including many people who never any anything to do with DnB.

true, i believe we just broke even every gig. lost some, won some, and it all balanced out. believe the boys are keen to make some money off it before we all split from hams though. we'll see, o'week is always good for money making

Yeah thats key. Problem is in Hamilton ur doing well to get 100 people paying let alone 150-200.

Being tight on ur budget is key. Fucked that for my last gig and lost around $2k :\

EDM is a promoter. Pretty much most other promoters in NZ who have delt with him hate him.

Yeah totally. I tend to avoid politics where possible. So far I have done so, mostly because Dubstep isnt so rife with it as the DnB crowd.

Basically EDMs fucked on too many people in the past afaik as is flakey as fuck.

For Bailey he was supposed to work with Stu & Sammies but pulled out at the last minute with no explanation and was a cock about it so they are putting on their own gig the same evening and thus Bailey is going to fail horribly.
Monet Yucel
25.11.2009
Yeah supposedly there's issues with dealing with EDM, don't really know the ins and outs of it all, as the politics seem to discolour the music as far as i'm concerened, what happened with Bailey?

Hmmm indeed. Good shit. Me n Stu were looking at picking it, but not too keen on dealing with EDM tbh. I feel sorry for Bailey.

Totally! With dubstep artists like Headhunter, Appleblim, Martyn, Scuba & Skream heading into the 172 bpm territory and DnB acts like Kryptic Minds & DBridge/Instra:mental doing the whole dubstep & half-step thing theres a whole new terrority and fusion.

+ Theres the whole Tribal Percussion / 2-step / UK Funky infused dubstep ting rolling out with the likes of Untold, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Grevious Angel, Appleblim, 2562, Martyn etc.

Such a good time for progressive bass music !!
