Wow this looks promissing

http://www.allen-heath.com/uk/Produc...neK2&SubCatId=

So if you link two together with the ethernet cable through USB, will it 'merge' the soundcard so you have a 4 channel soundcard?

If it does then you could bring two to a gig, hook them together with ethernet and not need another audio interface and have a 4 channel soundcard. It kind of sucks they put one 1/8" on the front instead of having both outputs in the back. It makes it a little awkward if you wanted to run both outputs to separate channels on the mixer, now you have to run a cable to the front. Also remember you have the option to run each channel in traktor mono so you could use one of them as a 4 channel soundcard with a few adapters (like you would with an audio 2 or 4). Plus a lot of systems are mono anyway.

I really like the idea of having one or two of these with a DB2 or DB4 for a home setup then just take them to your gig with a laptop and you have an audio interface to use already in your controller with the house mixer.

I love the X1s but I might have to give them up for these, i would love to get my hands on one.

So last sent message overwrites the previous one? If so that's all I need.

ah ok... i knew something changed, thought it was the midi channel for some reason.

Wonder if you can work around this when the layers are disabled.
i'm pretty sure mixarchitect did say that if you send back the midi message for a button on a particular layer then it will change it's colour to that layers colour independant of what layer it is currently on.

The channel remains the same, what does change is the note/CC assigned to the control (up/down 3 octaves). It's a pitty that the colors are indeed linked to the note they are sitting on as opposed to be velocity controlled but that's what we pay for hardwired layers. (I believe) This could we changed with a firmware upgrade.

Wonder if you can work around this when the layers are disabled.

Well the layer button is pretty much a hard wired shift button when you believe about it

not sure about changing colors this way while *also* using it's latching layers but from what i understand you change the midi channel depending on what layer/colour u want to get... so CC=000,Channel=1,Value=127 would change a button to one colour while sending CC=000,Channel=2,Value=127 should change it's colour to the other layer.

all very doable with any kind of scripted config - but more of a pain to keep track of instead of just changing the value sent out. traktor should be ok (tho will be more confusing than usual) but not sure about ableton.

in midimasher i tend to write things like send("launchpad", "mixer", lp_hi_red) that will make the mixer button red but i'll have to have different names for the controls depending on what colour i want. not ideal...

i prefer to use different colours to show what controls do what and different layers using them differently whereas i guess their idea is for all buttons to be the same colour and just show u what layer you're on
Jonathan Chiuchiolo
23.03.2012
but does that mean if you are on layer 1 "red" you can send it a message instead for layer 3 "green" and you will get a different color, cause that can be done fairly easily in vdj... you just need to send on for red and off for green, a bit of a pain in the arse but definately dooable, and considering I want to map effects via a shift on the 4 deck mixer, this will let me know that is active, it might even give us a superbright yellow as well as the standard yellow.... now im believeing i want to have 3 layers, 1st no color red leds, 2nd yellow static red leds, 3rd green static red leds, and I can mix and match different sections for a stupidly complicated mapping.
Chasidy Heckenbach
23.03.2012
afaik it can't be overridden, i did make these points when discussing the midi implementation earlier in this thread, saying i thought it was a bad idea...

i like the idea of the latching layers BUT i would also have liked to be able to specify the button colours using one CC/Note per button and varying the velocity/value. seems we'll need to send out a different CC/Note to a certain button to make it change colour. seems kind of dumb. esp for people wanting to implement layers/status in the actual app like vdj/traktor/ableton etc...
Jonathan Chiuchiolo
23.03.2012
@zestoi, if you check out the manual from the allen & heath website it shows that the leds and buttons on different layers send and receive different messages, I hope this isn't like the velocity pads on the VCI-400 and blocks the other layers messages. but fingers crossed that A&H used their heads when putting this together or it can be overridden (is that a word LOL) with a firmware update.

I agree with you there! There has been a gap in the market after the X-session pretty much... for a small mixer type controller. And beeing the first one on the market would be a huge sales advantage.

I still believe they will sell loads, but as you say, it's alla about getting the product to market in the right time. It doesn't matter if we know it will come when someone else start selling something similar.

Personally I still believe it's strange that this type of controller took so long to "invent"
Chasidy Heckenbach
23.03.2012
i still want one for full control over 4 decks, levels/eq/transport/filters/kills but... back when this was announced the only other thing like it was the X1. now there's a bunch of things in the works with all the CMD series and the F1. never mind the MF3D which isnt the same thing at all but still another interesting controller...

they would have killed the market if they had released it already...

the midi implementation is kind of odd too - i'm sure any other controller will allow u to select a pad's color just using the midi value sent to it.

it's still the only controller like it that has a soundcard builtin tho - and that's something i need to get.

A little torn about them myself... Sure I could find good use for them to. Suppose I would have to make it a two channel mapping instead to keep it symetric

Anyways, looking forward to try it out!

23.03.2012
I wish the shift was on the left side, then I wouldn't have to cross my arms over to let my dominant right use the controls, if we can control the leds seperately from the active layer I'll make it happen in the software but only time will tell if that is possible...

I also saw on some european website that they won't restock until 15th of April
Chasidy Heckenbach
23.03.2012
i believe the two encoders are the bottom are great... plus u need a "shift" button somewhere so it can't be 100% symmetrical throughout. i believe they really complete the controller layout.
Jonathan Chiuchiolo
22.03.2012
I believe they will work for pitch bending and loop size when shifted, for a third shift when you press one of the encoders I will use them for a browser search, I believe they are a great addition to a great controller as now all that is needed in the club is one of these an audio 2 soundcard and a laptop and some smart mapping, that will give you 3 lines out into the house mixer and full control, you shouldn't need anymore than that for any gig.
Santiago Brasier
22.03.2012
I thought this was a great thing at first. I might still get it in the end but the longer I wait the more I feel like it's just another controller.

In a few ways they nailed it, made just what I want but a few small things disturb me about it. Probably the least significant but the one that I would like your opinion about is the two encoders at the bottom. I like symetric layouts and can't understand why one would place them there. It throws the unit of balance in my eyes.

I know they would be useful and that others will have a different opinion. But I would rather just have seen two more buttons and keep all four "channels" the same. It's a tiny thing, but still disturbs me

Anyways, would be great if they decided to release it so we could finally see some proper reviews and user statements.

Cheers everyone for sharing your findings and ideas.

I'm making one for VDJ... with a left/right 4 decks mixer on the red layer, a straight 4 decks mixer on the yellow layer and a sample control on the green layer...

A&H Said on there FB a few days ago that retailers should be receiving them next week

i rang 4 retailers as soon as this message was posted.

1 said may
1 said july
2 said april

so fuck knows, just wish they would announce the date.

I've been told June now. Is this correct?

Sounds right.. Allen heath did say theyd start shipping to distributors by end of mar.. So a few days to get to retailers aint bad..

a retailer told me he expects to have them in hand 4-5 weeks so i believe it means apr 5th is a true date which is not that bad imo..

Allen heath now have the user guide on their site which seems to be trend of posting it a few weeks before delivery,

I've been believeing of picking one of these up too replace my s4 all together, opinions? I'd have to wait but thats cool because I'm in no rush. I love how small it is and how much more portable it would be to take on gigs with vs my s4 which is just huge...

I directly called the United States Allen & Heath distributor (American Music and Sound) and spoke with a great guy Donovan who manages the west coast retailers. We had a lengthy discussion about the unit and he told me that the expected arrival in the states is around the end of march. He also said it looks like A&H have a pretty small first shipment into the states so it'd be best to hop on a retailer who is doing pre-orders.

Man, just when I thought I'm done buying gear, I now have thoughts of using this to control all of Traktor! :-P
