The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

I guess you didnt finish reading my article before writing back this essay? I did go onto justify the move towards the more commercial sound of dnb. I also state that this is the case with the UK scene. I do not live in america, and nor would I want to. If it is as you describe, it sounds pretty one dimensional and needs a good injection of diversity.
The scene here IS my cup of tea, theres plenty of dnb evening s on, theres plenty of radio play here too and a lot of the current 'drumstep' sound is making its way into the charts.

Just because I dont like it doesnt mean its of lesser quality or any less justified. It doesnt stop me voicing my opinion though, neither does it make my opinion any less valid. Its an opinion afterall, not misguided cancerous prejudice as you so rudely state.

It's definitely not dead though. But I don't really know your definition of DnB, traditional jungle and very light DnB might be less prominent, but this whole craze over "drumstep" and then we've got artists like Sub Focus, Tantrum Desire, Camo & Crooked cranking out DnB tunes that are rocking shows all over. but once again, some purists don't consider this real DnB.

btw I did a 45 minute drum & bass/ drumstep mix a little while ago, using almost entirely tunes released in the last 2 or 3 years. So if you've been out of the loop:

Its not a childish rant, hopefully a perceptive and balanced argument. I'll let you be the judge of that though.
Although i appreciate you writing on this matter, I believe it's pretty inaccurate. And I believe that's due to this cancerous prejudice anyone who likes something before it becomes popular develops. I can tell because of the terms you're using like brostep, or commercial sounds.

I like all DnB, in fact I love all EDM, and I believe people don't realize how similar it all is. They say these days it all sounds the same with "commercial sounds" (is it even possible for a synthesized sound to be commercial? does that even make sense?), but if you look back through eras of EDM in any genre, it all did sound similar, if it didn't you wouldn't be able to look back and pick out the different periods of evolution.

You say it's all mainstream, or "commercial", but it's really not haha. I'm over in the U.S., the ones you guys over in UK blame for ruining DnB and Dubstep. But it's not, at all. sure there is an overflowing amount of pruducers and DJ's but i believe that's technology at work. And trust me, if I played out Led Astray at a local house party, I'd get weird looks. You couldn't play out at a club and even drop what you call "commercial" dubstep/dnb, it wouldn't fly, in the same way you couldn't drop your "underground" or "real" dubstep/dnb.

It's not on the radio, you won't hear it at house parties, in my town there are small EDM shows every now and then, a couple clubs that play dirtier Electro style stuff. Yes, the music they play at these clubs/shows has evolved in the last few years, but the frequency of them or the scene there really hasn't changed THAT much. in the end it's all EDM at different points in time. And it's the really terrible misinformed view coming from the UK that over in the U.S. we just have brostep shows all the time teaming with the same idiots at clubs and it's all anyone listens to, cause it's simply not true.

I just find it ridiculous that people who claim to be "underground" call anything that reaches a certain self determined point of popularity is hence forth commercial, mainstream, shit. Because people like something, doesn't make it of lesser quality.

I've been out of the drum and bass scene for a long time. Last time I was buying vinyl from Breakbeat Science plus some random music from Beatport.

Got some great recommendations in another thread, really like Hospital Records. But it's getting pretty hard to find any jump up stuff. Seems ironic since hip-hop and drum and bass fit so well together.

I do believe their music is more throwaway than it ever has been, but that is directly due to the pop culture they are submersing themselves in.

We all know that the top40 is generally a reflection of the cheapest, cheesiest tunes available in that songs genre. Hospital are no different.

High Contrasts new tunes are a shadow of his former self, same goes for camo and krooked and netsky. Before netsky and camo & krooked were signed to hospital, they made some fucking sweet tunes. Like, exceptional dancefloor, this! http://www.junodownload.com/products...nd/1509365-02/

Hospital dont make dancefloor like this, they hoover up all the talent and take all the life out of it.

Med school on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish entirely.

I do agree with you about the hospitality evening s though, theyre epic, and filled with cu*ts. Its all about the small side room pumping out the underground sounds . The crowd is completely different, people actually go there for the music, not the fashion show! Who'd have thought!?

i started off loving hospital like many and then found other labels like ingrediants, ram, shogun. dont get me wrong i still buy a few hospital tracks and their bundles are pretty good but i prefer other labels now.

check out the new hospital 2012 comp coming out end of the month it looks really good and looking forward to the new medschool comp

P.S. New Tech Itch stuff kicks ass. Kymera / Take You is great. I can't wait for his remix of KJ Sawka's New Life to get released... though given that it's supposed to be forthcoming on Bad Chemistry Recs it could be a long time before it's released.

dnb aint dead for Andy C, he still makes a killing off it. Especially with his new Andy C:Live show. Apparently He's got Traktor hooked into a midi mixer and the midi note feedback controls the lighting/visualisation business on the wall behind him. Nice setup!
Last time I saw him though he was running traktor on DVS and some small midi controller, no vinyl in sight! But he was also doing one of his AndyC:Live sets down at nottingham on the same evening .
