The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

Howitzer is on board. If you want to play but can't do weekly, we could probably work something out. post a mix to the filth fm dnb facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/FilthFMDrumandBass) and then we can figure out your timeslot. I can tell you, however, that while coming up with a new mix every week seems like a lot of work at first(it definitely did to me), you will get used to it quickly. just something to believe about.

OnmiRoss is correct, Filth FM is based in England and we're on GMT. Just post a 30 min or so mix on the facebook page, or if you'd rather, you can send me a link through here and and I'll pass it along!

edit: Listening to your stuff on soundcloud, if you want to use one of your longer mixes from there, that's fine, they're quite good.

Yes it is... gives it a little more bounce and the Calyx and Teebee recent releases are on the verge already. Total Science has been making a few tunes over the past year that kind of has the laid back vocals, throw back to quality jump up bassline and underpinnings and ambience of neuro... hard not to love this stuff.

Well, I'm pretty up to date on most liquid stuff, so I won't mention those. But as of recent my focus is shifting more towards the likes of

Delta Heavy, Calyx & Teebee, Tantrum Desire, TC, Rockwell, Metrik, Smooth, ...

It's so awesome to mix jump-up / drumstep & what's-close-to-Neurofunk.

Post number millenium, absolute yayness!

Speaking of classics, one should really check out DJ Fokus - Brave New World. Lucky Spin LSR 025 from 1995, just the year when the Lucky Spin record store and label shut down. It's got some drums that won't make your head explode like some of Squarepushers stuff, but still makes you go like ->
Besides, it mixes really well!

I used to rinse it out from 92 till about 2004.

But I'm a Londener and it was our fakkin scene in the first place (later it went all over the u.k to the bigger citys.. Birmingham and Manchester.. Bristol).... We loved it.

The pirate radio stations totally caining it... huge raves all over the u.k and loads of dope U.K producers. It was a buzz!

BUT It then became shite ............ the scene became stale..........the music went wanky.

Now I'm back into it.. well sort of.

Got a mate to record 326 of my fave 12's to wav and send dem over on shitloads of D.V.D to me in Berlin. It took him months to do it. I have just finished restoring them to high quality.

Drum and Bass........ is in my soul ... and so is U.K Garage.

I don't believe it is a dead genre, that is such a poncy thing to say. It has just moved on as a genre and become more diverse.

I must admit I have not had my ear to the ground like I used to with this wonderful wonderful Bastard U.K genre....

But this is what I would call a classic stepper below:

Metalheadz ... 1996.

There was very little DnB at the DEMF this year, but people still went nuts over what was there. It was absolutely packed for Roni Size.

Personally, I started off as a Drum & Bass DJ, then drifted (like many) into dubstep. Recently though I find my favorite style to spin is Drumstep mixed with Drum & Bass. Basically the same style Dieselboy spins now.

Drum N Bass is a strong as it's ever been from what I know, every festival has at has at least one DnB room/tent or a number of DnB headliners, weekly DnB evening s here in Toronto, we see BIG names from all styles every week. IMO I believe it'll get stronger still, Dubstep really got what's now called "Bass Music" growing fast here, whether people wana admit it or not lol... but i believe we'll see more and more people (noobs) realise there's actually a difference between Dubstep and Dnb lol and DnB will get more followers from it, as for the sound changing/progressing that's never going to stop, sorry oldskewlers lol
