The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

Please, somebody, tell me you know where I can find this awesome tune... I have searched every place I know (discogs, Beatport, Juno, Soundcloud) and can't seem to find it. I only managed to come up with a 2 min, 128kbps version from a site called promodj, where I also sourced the info that it was forthcoming on telluric records...However, I couldn't find any info on wether it was pressed or not. It's an old song (2009) from a russian producer, remixed by spherique. Any info will be appreciated.

It airs on Digitally Imported's liquid DNB channel.

Really good representation for where drum and bass is at for me. Jungle juke is kind of taking over.

Giving the Nocturnal EP from Dave Owen a listen. Always loved his summerfeeling-inducing tunes. No idea if he already freebie'd "Joyride"? I say freebie cause I'm sure he already posted on his FB that it's not getting a release & will be given away.

Talking about freebies, Upbeats & Noisia gave away a free tune aswell, it's called "Loudmouth". Pretty decent imo!

Dunno... if it's a legit good mix maybe post a link to the thread you made for it, same goes for a track or remix you made. If you post a tracklist on the mix thread it helps a lot. I'll usually give dnb mixes a listen if I see them and I dig the music in them.

I'm totally cool with it (as if I have any authority ) as this is definitely the right place for a mix of Drum n Bass n such... but if it turns into every other post being mix spam...

There's also this, but I dunno how much use the groups are getting:

Man, Rockwell used to make some great DnB, and Shogun used to be a lot better too... I still find myself playing Bone Structure or Everything (& U). I don't like trap for the most part, so that's probably why I don't appreciate that side of Rockwell's recent output. Mind you that 'Fluf' track on childhood memories was pretty cool, definitely not DnB though.

Oh, and here's an amazing older tune, Outlook - Satisfy:

Shogun is where good producers go to die and barely release anything. Rockwell doesn't fit their style at all IMO. Rockwell is good for Shogun, but Shogun isn't good for Rockwell. He has a tune coming out in Exit though.

Hospital is full good producers that make garbage.
Estrella Rozzo

Cant agree on Rockwell being a bad signing for Shogun. Even The Prototypes are less Shogun than he is. But now that he mostly produces trap it's maybe time for him to move on.

Nu:Tone & Logistics signing to Hospital, not sure if that was such a bad thing either. For that time they were pretty Hospital to me. Nu:Tone has quite some decent tunes if you ask me, and Logistics too. Sadly only 1-2 / album.

S.P.Y. & Metrik signing to Hospital were more unexpected moves to me. Especially S.P.Y., I really really like his music, but I always get the feeling they'll be pushed toward something more (and I hate to use the word again) commercial. Luckily he didn't with his last album, which was pure epicness.
Metrik on the other hand I havent listened to for a while. Some of his songs are really good imo. And some just are the same thing over & over again. I do believe he's a really good DJ. I wouldn't be surprised if his sound changed just like Camo & Krooked's did.

Since we're talking about Hospital anyway, there's rumors that Keeno (Liquidtones) is getting signed at Hospital. He makes really good 'real' liquid, and again I'm afraid that's about to change.

Now I might seem like a really big hater, but that's not the case. Other labels just release tunes that my taste is more directed to. Hospital is more for the masses & festivals. And they're really big in Belgium.

Oh, and a really quick edit. I Love Tony Colman as a producer, a dj, an organiser, ... He's just hands down a really cool guy.

It was just awful, I went to one in Cardiff and I had a really good time. But this was just so predictable... Don't get me wrong, technically the DJ's were very good. Just that Hospital sound is very aged now. They need something new.

People moshing to drum & bass can just fuck off. It's not welcome.

It's bad music. Hospital is lowest common denominator noise.

Mosaic vol 2 is dropping soon. The first was pure excellence. The second is going to be even better.

I don't like the live shows. But that's just me. Used so love Boris' music, but not so much anymore. I'm really happy for him that he's climbing to the top of the EDM ladder slowly, by making good music. It just doesn't cut it for me. His sound has changed, his crowd/fanbase has changed drastically. And I probably changed aswell. I do believe his live shows are way better than any of his DJ sets were. And they put alot of hard work into those shows.

just some words after toevening ...

I went to a concert Netsky - live, in Antwerp, and it was amazing... The live-show, the songs, the vibe, the crowd,... The musicians bring it to a next level!!
It was a long time ago that I saw such a good, energetic show brought by a producer of electronic music. A year ago I was at the first Belgian live show of Netsky and since then I saw him a few times live, but this one was the best!!

It was a long time ago that had so much fun on a drum&bass show

Just discovered this compilation from Exit Recordings from 2011 called "Mosaic Volume 1". Not the usual I listen to, but I can sure as hell appreciate this stuff. The deeper minimal sound. This is my second listen and I'm really enjoying it.

Also recently digging for some Break tunes I found "They're Wrong", which I believe is a really sweet tune.

Any recent/older discoveries?

Hospital has been dead to me for years. I don't even bother listening to any of their new tunes. It's a shame as it was such a respected label. Med School is solid though.
Sadly, I agree. However, despite the fact that I believe Logistics' latest offering ("Fear Not") was horrible,
that new Nu:Logic album is DEFINITELY a step back in the right direction...there are a few stinkers
on there, but I love it for the most part!

Though, you are right, Med School has been consistently good since it's inception.

Sorry, but I guess I'm just one of those old farts that refuses to accept that commercial DnB,
in what I grew up as an underground music/culture, is good for the scene. Personally, I wish it
could all (Dance Music) return to being underground again, but I realize that will prolly never happen.

Commercial dnb is good for the scene IMO. Just like any genre, the more accessible stuff draws new fans who will eventually seek out the heads shit. Dnb isn't at the state to be elitist. The genre seems to be just hanging on outside a few places.

Hospital can be alright, just tends to be more needle in a haystack with the tunes, the Nu:Logic album had a couple of really nice ones on it, plus they've signed S.P.Y so at least we can rely on him for quality, but I agree their overall sound is just not that great. Hospital's sublabel, Med School, is putting out some interesting stuff though, quality too.
