The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

Going live on http://drumandbass.filth.fm in 15 min (6pmEST/2300 GMT) for my last show on the station, as next week I move over to the main Filth FM channel. There's no one scheduled after me, so I'm going to just keep playing until I run out of tunes or energy (my guess is my energy will run out first). Tune in and check it out

Cheer's for the suggestions peeps. Giving Photek's old stuff a good listen. I'm really liking the atmospheric chiller drum and bass stuff and trying to find some different styles to put into my mixes that are mainly Techno/Deep House/Prog kind of stuff.

If I had to list 5 producers for a Noob to start they would be:
Photek
Omni Trio
Dillinja
Digital
Paradox
Ed Rush and Optical
Kemal

I know that 7, but I couldn't stop. They all represent different styles of dnb well. Don't listen to any Dillinja after 2000 though. He really went to shit.

Really digging tunes like these

If anyone can recommend some music like those that would be sweet

There's a sticky on DOA called 100 tunes you should know. That's a good place to start. I wouldn't even know where to start I'd I wanted to list 20 years of great music. Here are some labels though: Metalheadz, Moving Shadow, Prototype, Bassbin, Reinforced, Critical, Virus, Commercial Suicide, True Playaz, Paradox Music, Scientific Wax, Creative Source, V Recordings, Exit, Hard Leaders, GLR. I'm literally leaving out dozens of well known labels. Dnb is really diverse because of the variety of influences. Pretty much anything goes as long as it's in the 160-180 bpm range.

Really glad to hear that group of artists get together and make another amazing track with a similar vibe without it being just a re-hashing of Oblique
This.

I want Synkro to remix this one too though
+1 ...... and exactly where has Synkro disappeared to?
I mean, he just released that extremely minimal, "Acceptance EP",
but other than that, I haven't really heard much from him.

Now back on topic with the current discussion:
Live Drum & Bass I dunno, could be good, I mean look at The Qemists right? They've made some pretty awesome stuff. Definitely would be happy to see wider acceptance of controllers (especially since that's what I use) because of the increase in creative possibilities I find them to allow, however, I feel like vinyl is something really important to Drum & Bass and something that shouldn't get forgotten or stop being a medium. Furthermore, for a DJ on tour a timecode set-up just makes way more sense than shipping around how many crates of records with you, right?

Yeah, you got it black avenger. I like live djing too, don't get me wrong. But sometimes it would be nice to do an actual remix live and on the fly, really just going with what the crowd is feeling. Of course not every track, but dj a few, remix one here or there. I guess it's more of just wanting to see what we can do with all these new technologies, that tech house, dubstep, etc, are already using in live settings. Seems the genre, especially the more erratic jungle breaks, would lend themselves perfectly to this format.

^ nice post, OmniRoss, but wouldn't this example be the exact antithesis of what Flpanhandler
was asking for when he stated thus:

but what I really want to see is the movement of dnb towards embracing the new technology. Use the controllers to do live drops of drum loops, finger drumming, really using the hardcore original jungle and heavy drum riffs, to bring all that out live
What Ray Keith got right, with Renegade Live, was
using the hardcore original jungle and heavy drum riffs, to bring all that out live
..... However, I feel it is more akin to London Elektricity Live,
than what I believe Flpanhandler was requesting.

My assumption is he'd like to see someone banging out Drum Programming on an MPC or Maschine.....
Pad Synthesis on real Synths or MIDI....Perhaps someone on an Akai EWI blowin' out eerie background
sounds....Maybe a vocalist with a Micro-Korg or Ableton equivalent?

Not so much Live Bassists, and Real Live Drummers.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Live DnB, I was just speaking to the difference of your post to Flpanhandler's.

I believe it would be amazing to see shows like this, and I believe if dnb wants a resurgence this step is the next one that needs to be taken. That's just my opinion, but it is what I plan on doing with the technology available and the genre I love.
