Hey everyone,

It's finally here! But, before we continue, some quotes to set the right mind and mood.

Sample decks, loops, FX etc. are the next level. If your mixes suck without them, they won’t get better with them. Oh how many evening s have been spoiled by some clueless guy overusing the beatmasher.
That said, everyone who knows my previous mappings, I'd like you to try and just forget them. Now we are going to go to the next level!

What's new!

  • The ability to have up to 14 effect modes or groupings
  • The ability to quickly select through the modes with the C and D deck gain knobs
  • The ability to increment or step through effects in a grouping. Theoretically increasing the possible number of effect modes to 28
  • A better work flow for working with other controllers

If you are new to my FX Jogs mappings, you can go back through the old threads starting with this one and have a nice read. You can get an idea what you are getting into. If you want to start at the beginning, have at it.

Please note: There are two different mappings in the download below. One is the "Builder" and only has one FX mode just as an example FX grouping, so those who are interested in mapping their own effects can have a go at the other 13 modes. The second version is the "FULL" version and is the one I'll continue to add effect groupings as I get suggestions from other users or come up with my own ideas. The FULL version 5.0 beta only has 6 effect modes at the moment. You can read up on them and a bit on what they can do in the documentation in the download.

This first version is a BETA and is not ready for live performances. I have added some documentation in the download, but the section for mapping new effect groupings is missing and will be added for the gold version. I hope to have the gold running in a couple of weeks and I hope to spawn some creative juices for those effects wizards for some ideas on new and cool effects groupings. This mapping opens a whole new realm of FX jogs.

Copyright and Usage

Anyone can use this mapping free of charge for their own personal or professional use. It MAY NOT be uploaded to any other web site for download or passed on to third parties in its original or modified form without my authorization. Downloading the pakage below automatically signifies your acceptance to these usage rules.

That's it! I hope you like is and as always, have fun! I am looking forward to any and all constructive feedback.

Yeah, but the FX Jogs function doesn't work with 2.1.3 and the sample decks. So if that carries over to 2.5, then no one will be able to map the effects jogs to the sample decks, because when you switch to the sample deck on the S4, the jog automatically converts back to scratch mode. In other words, all you can do with the jogs and the sample decks is scratch. You can still work the normal effects on the sample decks, just not the Jog FX, which is pretty lame. I hope there isn't some technical barrier for this in Traktor, which means FX jogs will never happen with the sample decks.....

I believe, this culd be used in 2.5, becuse the Remix Decks should be full mapable to the FX Units. Only the Remix Decks itself are limited, without a F1 Controller.

Hey, thanks! That does put my idea and its workflow into perspective and it ain't all that bad I guess.

I am pretty confident my idea for a 4 deck FX jogs control will work too and it won't be too much effort to reassign the current gain knobs and add the other two to control decks C and D. We are going to be getting a step closer to the next biggest wish for this mapping. 4 deck control.

However, there are two major issues that disappoint me with the FX Jogs functionality in Traktor using the S4 and my mapping and having 4 deck control.

1. You can't use FX jogs with sample decks. The load button to turn on the FX jogs doesn't work. That totally sucks.
2. You have to constantly press the FX jogs (the load button) back on, when you swap deck control between two track decks on the S4. This is one unnecessary step in the workflow. If I turned on FX jogs on one deck and come back to it, FX Jogs control should still be on.

I just tested a bit and with a 4 deck control in my mapping, point 2 would break it or rather, I'd need to take out the jump to mode one with the press of the load button, which isn't really a problem and something I'll have to do. Edit-/ Deleted the sentence about the set FX also working automatically. Nope, won't work as you still need to turn the proper gain knob to move the effect units to the related deck. Hmm... I wish I had a modifier extra....or wait....I have another idea.....

If I can get my mapping to work with 4 decks, I am going to humbly ask NI, if they can fix these two issues. I believe, with version 2.5 and the new Mix Decks, resolving these issues would make my mapping very, very interesting.

If holding shift to switch effects, it wouldn't matter having the gain encoders matching with the decks. It would be a lil easier to manage, so it is a plus. But, if this requires a lot of work, It wouldn't matter to switch on the opposing decks.

The workflow is that one. I didn't see any problem with that. We already press a lot of buttons and knobs to add effects:

Group Mode
Button 1 - The effect button on the selected deck.
Button 2 - The button effect on effect panel.
Knob 1 - Dry/wet
Knob 2 - Effect knob

Single mode:
Button 1 - The effect button on the selected deck.
Button 2 - The "on" effect button.
Button 3 - Effect option 1
Button 4 - Effect option 2
Button 5 - Reset effect options
3 Knobs - Managing effects parameters.
1 Knob - Dry/Wet.

Ok, I'd like some feedback to an idea I have on how to control decks C and D too, before I go on a mapping spree.

First of all, a fact of S4 life is you simply can't jump between decks and use Jog FX without doing the following every time you go between decks. You have to...

1. Press the Deck C or D buttons.
2. Press the load button to turn on the FX jogs

My idea is to use the other two gain encoders (with Shift) to also move the effects to Decks C and D (and turn them off on decks A and B).

So the work flow between let's say Deck A and C would be...

You have effect units 1 and 3 on Deck A then you

1. Press the Deck C button.
2. Press the load button to turn on the FX jogs (this also automatically puts you back to mode 1)
3. Turn the proper gain knob (with Shift) to put FX controls on that deck and select the FX mode

So my questions are:

Is that really too much "work" to switch decks? Or, does the idea sound feasable from a workflow perspective at all? I don't see how I can do it any other way to be honest.

Should I map the gain encoders to match the actual decks, meaning the Deck A gain encoder would move the effects units (turn them on) for Deck A and Deck C would be controlled by the Deck C gain encoder? Deck B and D gain encoders would be exactly the same. Or should the Deck C gain encoder control Deck A (as it is now) and the Deck A gain encoder control Deck C (needs to be mapped)?

For reasons unknown to myself I was about to install the DJTT mapping and had never heard you'd released this version....until last evening ....so I'll be sorting it out this weekend and then will report back with any feedback/bugs in the coming weeks.

Can I just say, even before I use it, thank you for taking time and doing something like this - people like you, pushing forwards the S4 in ways no one else is, really is impressive and is a massive task which we appreciate you spending hours working on - so thanks dude

Hi Otto,

what you can do to make a back-up of your desired state is export your settings as your own TSI file leaving all the check boxes checked. When you want to go back to it, just import that TSI file with the big import button at the bottom and you are back to where you started.

Any tips on 'disaster recovery'. Your work looks fantastic but before I try it I'm curious about best practices for configuration management. Once I load a .tsi what is the most reliable method for falling back to a previous configuration. For instance a see an 'Import' button under Traktor Preference -> Controller Manager but I'm confused by talk of a Big or small import button. I also don't see any option to fall back to a default state, other than the Setup Wizard, which I believe falls back to to the factory configuration but not necessarily my desired state.

It is because I find it better, when the reverb doesn't kick in too much. It is then a bit more subtle, when the effect stops. Also the peak filter climbs slower, because it also gets rather obnoxious at about 90% and above. So the idea is the peak filter only gets to about 80%, when the W/D and the Iceverb are at 100%.

This is all my personal taste and it wouldn't take but learning the mapping some to change the parameters yourself, to how you like them.

Wow... Okay, gotta try this again when I get home from work. Sounds sweet. By the way, I was watching the Armyofme video and on her sweep effect it seems like the dry/wet and all 3 effects go up at an equal level. On your mapping the third effect (reverb) stays put at about 20-25%, and the 2nd one (can't remember which that is) goes up slightly faster than the first and the dry/wet. Any reason for the change? I like that the reverb goes up in hers.

You should only need to press and hold the "Shift" button for the first press of the jog to start the incremental mode. The first press with "Shift" gets it started. The next presses of the jog shouldn't need shift any more.

Mode 1 has 6 increments.

Press 1 - (with "Shift") gets the beatmasher going with 4 beats (don't run too long with this on)
Press 2 - increments to a 1 beat and turns up the peak filter 20%. This is actually the start of the effect, because the filter drops the sound volume considerably.
Press 3 - increments to a 1/2 beat and turns up the peak filter 40%, bringing up the volume too
Press 4 - increments to a 1/4 beat and turn up the peak filter to 100%, bringing up the volume but all together you have like a drum roll crescendo.
Press 5 - reset back to 0 but holds the reverb, so the effect can run out
Press 6 - turns everything that was on back off

This isn't perfect, but it was my first attempt at this incremental stuff. We can always improve it. Something you can try to do is on press five, also hit a hot cue to move the song to another part of the track.

Mode 8
- Armeofme's Swoosh Drama effect has just three increments

Press 1 - (with "Shift") starts the effect and holds them all on. You can let go of the jog. You can turn the jog to the right slowly to make the effect happen.
Press 2 - kicks in the echo freeze and holds it
Press 3 - turns everything back off

The idea of this AoM incrementation is just a bit better workflow for a transition to the other deck, because everything runs over the jog touch. It is just easier to hit the touch than the "Effect on" button, especially if you are in a hurry, isn't it?

I believe with that explanation everyone can get an idea of what is now possible with this new version. Like I mentioned in the first post, theoretically, we can now have 28 different modes. 14 normal and 14 incremented.

Is this mapping for Traktor 2.1.3 or any? I've been having problems with the armyofme sweep. The iceverb peak filter all move the same but the reverb stays at around 20 percent and doesn't move. I've loaded the tsi file 4 times with the large import button and restarted traktor twice and imported the file again. I'm running traktor 2.1.2.

Also a spinback effect would we awesome if possible.

Thanx in advance!

You might have nailed the nail on the head. It always happened in browse mode. I would switch to browse then start to use the jog to select a track and then notice that it would have replicated the track in the other deck. Makes sense. Im excited to learn more about this mapping!

Looking at some more RMX-1000 videos, I certainly believe I can create the "kill" effect with the incrementation system I have now in place. So basically, you will be able to press shift and press the jog once to start the effects mode, dog around with the effect, press the jog again and get the kill effect, then press once again, to bring back the track. Oh, this is going to be fun.

Hey EMZZ. Thanks.

How were you searching? In the browse mode or in the normal browser? Can you describe the workflow you were doing and when the track loaded, when you didn't expect it to? The only track loading function I have in the mapping is with the Jog Touch in Browse Mode.

And there is a function in Traktor that will do what you are describing, sort of. If you have the same track still selected that is already playing in a deck and press Cue or the Jog Touch in Browse mode (with my mapping) or "Shift + Load" in Jog FX Mode, or only load, if you only use scratch mode, then that same track will load in the other deck and be playing at the same point the playing track is at. This is, for instance, a really cool function, if you want to jump into some quick beat or cue juggling. It can also be fun with the effects, like catching a vocal in one deck and jacking around with it to do some "filling in" to basically mash-up the song into itself.

I really believe the idea of the FX Jogs opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for the S4 and Traktor. We are only scratching the surface at this point.

Just had my first play around with your new mapping and loved it. Worked pretty flawless with 2 hours of mixing. Sometimes when I was searching for my next track it would load the track playing in Deck A into Deck B. Not sure why. Just had to switch back and turn off the track then load my new track. The effects all worked well and gave me now problems. I do mix more hip hop/glitch hop tracks so not all the effects work for that kind of style, but they are fun to throw in here and there during transitions. Would love to have just a simple delay reverb do use during breaks. Real mellow like. Been following your mappings for some time. Good work and thanks!

Yeah, I watched a couple of videos on that piece of gear . I'll see if I can pick out exactly what is going on and see if I can match some of those effects. Too bad I don't have the cash to just buy one. That would make "copying" the effects much easier.

Hey Fedenico999,

I hope I can get some feedback for some new ideas of other effects groupings, especially some with the incremental effect mode. As I add them, I'll be releasing newer versions. So it depends on our creativeness and how fast we can come up with new modes. My experience with DJing and using effects is rather limited, unfortunately. I somehow also have a feeling the way I set up the effects might not fit other "styles" of music other DJ's might go after. I like house, electro-house, tech-house and some hip-hop. I believe for instance, people who like Dubstep or Drum & Bass or Trance might not be totally happy. But who knows? Any ideas are welcome.

In a couple of weeks, when the mapping goes gold, I'll have an explanation on how to add your own effect groupings to the mapping. I believe that is what will make this mapping special. It lets others add their own effects modes rather easily and opens up the world of S4 FX jogs to just about anyone who is interested.

I know that. As you may know yourself, the "filter" knob on the S4 is not something you hang on the Christmas tree. If I must be honest, the effect sucks.
What I mean is IF you can remap it to some other kind of filter effect?

Has anyone figured out how to use the incrementing effects modes? Modes 1 and 8 have incremental progressions. Press "Shift" and the jog wheel touch. That starts the incremental effect. Then press only the jog wheel touch to continue and see what happens.
