Who scratches here?

Who scratches here?
Posted on: 22.12.2011 by Len Lukawski
A couple of months ago I decided to start learning to scratch, properly. Not just pushing the record around and hoping for the best (which best describes the previous 17 attempts back in the day). I have consumed hundreds of hours of videos on Youtube, been reading books, signed up for Qbert's SkratchU and practice whenever I can which unfortunately is maybe half an hour a day. I am definitely off the blocks skills-wise but still in skratch primary/elementary school.

So who here scratches?
Are you beginner or Grandmaster?
What are you learning right now?
What's been the hardest technique for you to learn?
How did you or do you learn?
What's your setup?
What do you scratch to?
Would you like to go to dinner?
- I edited this list as I had a repeat question on setups.

Would love to hear people's stories and views on this!

Have been trying to use the hamster switch on my mixer & my scratching is so screwed up right now. It's just going to take some time to get used to. My normal scratching is off now as well. Very frustrating.

How I wish that was my only problem! Will post something once the bubonic plague has killed me off and I have had a chance to reincarnate. For now I go back to streaming gallons of snot....

Agreed, only thing missing is getting your audio recorded externally.

That vid was great; never tried the backwards chirp scratch before. Of course it just sounds weird when I do it. Will be practicing that three-push tear as well. Thanks!

That would be pretty neat, seeing my mixer in another scratch DJ's hands. I can't wait to Innofade it.

as do I. I will know more in a few days. I hope to upload a vid of me scratching with it before I send it back.

Lovin the transforming(?) you're doing in the third video, got a nice groove to it.

Also, everybody in this thread is so much better than me, got my gear stashed at my mates place, was there yesterday and tried some cutting... Wish I could practice more.

DJ Lotus currently has my 05Pro3 in hopes he can get it working as it shorted out two weeks ago. Besides that, I got my MacBook repaired from Apple with a new display ready to roll (hopefully). Here's a quick video I made with Traktor and some Dicers.

Also, I made a follow up tutorial video explaining what I've been doing lately in my patterns.

sarasin I bought that light from buy.com it was 30 bucks shipped. Best 30 bucks I've spent in a while. I'll post the exact name when I get home for you.

djlotus the HDX's are nice to scratch on. Very smooth & you can not make them skip. I've turned the ttable sideways & scratched before. Plus they have a full 12in platter so it feels natural. The only problem I have is the display is very small. So finding songs or files can be difficult when it's filled with 80gb of music. When using it live you have to make playlists.

Thanks for the videos teambama. Good work on those Numarks. How do you like those BTW. I have been believeing about a spinning platter cdj and the options are very limited.

LOL....Better than me bro!

In your 2nd vid....you got some lights going on there, that fractals and comes together.
What is it?

Why?

Cuz I have the same thing, but its a handheld green laser with a detachable front bit that when you turn it, it fractals the laser in the exact same way as your lights.

That was just using iMovie 11. I really want to learn better software but I'm too lazy to do so. iMovie gets my point across fine enough.

I'd defnietly be down for another QandA, I may put a hold on videos for a while, the backlight on my MacBook died yesterday and now I'm posting from my desktop. I can still see the screen but with a flashlight. I took it to the Apple store and they quoted me $100 - $300 for the fix so I just ordered a $30 part which I believe is the culprit and hopefully I can get it back up and running. Here's the last video I made with it, which I'm sure some of you have seen.

Have the same issue....the tears are just not as tight as I would like em.

PRACTICE!

Hand Flop...yep...i know that one.

Also decided not to practice techniques when stoned....

Gotta be serious about it!

It's been a few weeks since I've cut. Been busy with the turntable mods. I'm giving myself a strict practice schedule.

15 minutes/right hand fader
15 minutes/left hand fader

And I'm going to alternate that for (hopefully) at least 90 minutes.
