Who scratches here?
Who scratches here? Posted on: 22.12.2011 by Len Lukawski A couple of months ago I decided to start learning to scratch, properly. Not just pushing the record around and hoping for the best (which best describes the previous 17 attempts back in the day). I have consumed hundreds of hours of videos on Youtube, been reading books, signed up for Qbert's SkratchU and practice whenever I can which unfortunately is maybe half an hour a day. I am definitely off the blocks skills-wise but still in skratch primary/elementary school. So who here scratches? Are you beginner or Grandmaster? What are you learning right now? What's been the hardest technique for you to learn? How did you or do you learn? What's your setup? What do you scratch to? Would you like to go to dinner? - I edited this list as I had a repeat question on setups. Would love to hear people's stories and views on this! | |
Evelyn Navarijo 12.01.2012 | Well... My headphones are in for service/repair, so now I don't have much to do but practice scratching |
Lilliana Perris 12.01.2012 | Well...lets hear em? WHERE THEY? WE WANT SCRATCH VIDS!!!!! My friends hate it when i get into that buzz.....all I do is play scratch vids and routines. They all seen em about 50 times. They just don't appreciate them as much as I do. |
Breanne Penge 11.01.2012 | Haha, you guys are sweethearts From the videos I've seen though, there are some dudes that can walk over me in a scratch battle ** editing Twitch demo video this week ** |
Len Lukawski 11.01.2012 | I feel good that I have already uploaded my padawan noodlings as it can only get better from here |
Lilliana Perris 11.01.2012 | The Scratch Daddy of DJTechtools? He is not bad at all....and beats all the vids I have seen here, I recon....So I would say YES! But...only until i have seen what everyone else can do. POST YOU SCRATCH ROUTINES! JPrime....you is well funny. |
Len Lukawski 11.01.2012 | So we're all agreed that JPrime is the Daddy? |
Belle Tufnell 11.01.2012 | ^ The Entertainer! |
Lashay Walchak 10.01.2012 | shit's hot son! reminds me of this sick ass skratch bastid vid. WHOOOAAAA! http://youtu.be/X5NN-ljO1KU |
Len Lukawski 10.01.2012 | Disagree - we need MORE of that kind of stuff. Too many people take themselves way to seriously. Nice bit of Showmanship! |
Breanne Penge 10.01.2012 | Epic I know. Left it there as a reminder, what not to do :P |

Ada Matzkin 05.01.2012 | So who here scratches? dee jae snafu Are you beginner or Grandmaster? im a 9th degree white belt What are you learning right now? moar record hand control ftw working on smooth and wavy tears. What's been the hardest technique for you to learn? flares took a while.. the trick for me was to uber slow them down until i was literally doing each part and stopping between : start fader open- push record half way thru sound-stop-click-stop-push record the rest of the way thru the sound-stop-rewind halfway-stop-click-rewind the rest of the sound-stop... repeat i did this for a few days for hours each day until i could slowly build speed while keeping them on beat. altho at first i did them with no other sound or music playing, then when i got the mechanics down , i added a beat and learned to do them in time. after this i applied this technique to other scratches i wanted to learn. How did you or do you learn? slow things down. also try practicing in a dark room with the lights off, it really helps me focus on the sound, which helps you get the mechanics better, because your building muscle memory when you scratch, which means the more you practice sloppy, the more you stay and develop sloppy. so when you practice make sure youre staying on point, when it all starts to feel and sound the same i stop, and give myself time to refresh. What's your setup? technics sl 1200mk3d rane ttm56 What do you scratch to? silence or beats |
Nella Libin 05.01.2012 | Sweet |
Lilliana Perris 05.01.2012 | 15 dollars little man....put that shit in my hand..... Sure mate, go buck wild! Just mention me then yeah? Link or something like that. Here is another one of the APC80. My mate is just pressing buttons (he does not really know whats happening there) and I was recording! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZGdw...2&feature=plcp DAMN! 8500 views! Its only 15 sec long! WOOT! This one is of the APC80 (before it was joined), but you don't see MUCH of it. Just tossing it in there....shamlessly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ5xY...4&feature=plcp |
Nella Libin 05.01.2012 | Ooooosh, i hope you dont mind, but i'm gonna share that APC 80 vid on Basefook! |
Lilliana Perris 05.01.2012 | Well, this is shortly after I got my TSP2 upgrade and got my APC80 running well. I had just started scratching....so forgive me. Its the stock standard XFader in the APC with a slight tweak in the mapping to get it to be more responsive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGlCk...1&feature=plcp |
Evelyn Navarijo 05.01.2012 | Actually tightened up my (tension adjustable) crossfader yesterday, made it feel a lot more smooth than before. Nice! |
Sadye Yankee 05.01.2012 | I'll try to get a video up by this weekend. My decks are sitting down in Eugene (University of Oregon) and i have been on break for the past 3 weeks. I'll be getting back tomorrow but I'll need to get some practice in and then i'll try to record something. |

Osvaldo Newhall 04.01.2012 | I do some basic scratches like chirps and transform. Nothing really special and I don't normally do it during my sets. I just scratch for fun. |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 04.01.2012 | wow if hipnopath's "somewhere in the middle" I an uber noob and need to practice some more |
Lilliana Perris 04.01.2012 | Scratching is like Kung Fu....or any other martial art. Its practice. You need to practice each scratch until it is easy and you can do it on cue. Then you start putting em together. I would say I am just after beginner.....but not very far. |

My brain does not seem to be able to cope with actively executing the 1 click flare but if I just use the force, it seems to come..... |
Ira Alsadi 03.01.2012 | So who here scratches? Just started learning so I annoy myself a great bit Are you beginner or Grandmaster? What comes before "beginner?" What are you learning right now? The very basics What's been the hardest technique for you to learn? Not a technique, but find it hard to not slip into my natural rhythm instead of actually performing the same scratch over and over How did you or do you learn? djAngelo's vids are favorited on my youtube and lots of old VHS of the invisible scratch pickles What's your setup? 2x 1200's, Vestex PMC-05, Pioneer DJM 500, TSP, Kontrol X1, 2x Dicer, 2x M44-7, Sony MDR-v700 What do you scratch to? looped beats around 80 BPM for now. would love to scratch over my ghettofunk someday Would you like to go to dinner? I like turtles |
Verona Spradlin 31.12.2011 | So who here scratches? Me! Are you beginner or Grandmaster? Somewhere in the middle. What are you learning right now? Prizm What's been the hardest technique for you to learn? Tazer How did you or do you learn? Youtube. What's your setup? 3 1200s and a PMC 05 Pro and PMC 06 Pro What do you scratch to? Lots of beat4battle beats. Would you like to go to dinner? Sure! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS5nGC-ySlc |
Sadye Yankee 31.12.2011 | I've been scratching for about 2 years now. I haven't really taken it too serious as i'm a busy college student. I'll try to get a video or soundcloud post up soon. Just ordered traktor so that will help out a lot. Right now i'm not really focusing on a new scratch, just trying to perfect the ones i've learned so far (1 click flares, original flares, 2 click flares, chirps, babies, stabs, crabs, etc). In the next coming months i'll probably start to focus on more advanced flare patterns such as the aquaman scratch and swing flares. One thing i've learned about scratching is that there are some patterns that on paper looks so easy, but are so frustrating to learn. |
Belle Tufnell 24.12.2011 | http://soundcloud.com/dj4shure/dj_4-hure-scratching Here's my first soundcloud post ever. Feel free to critique. Would love to hear some feedback. The very last minute or so is not me. Will post a vid, when I get a chance. This by far one of the best threads Smittten. |
Yee Bedilion 24.12.2011 | I practise on my cdj 800's I used to play bass, so my right hand is solid for using the fader...but the only thing is my rhythm is better in my right hand too.. so I would rather have that one on the record. I practise doing baby scratches with like fwd, back, back or fwd, fwd, back. On the fader had I am just trying to crab I guess. Not really specific technique, but just getting my motor skills up I guess. I also practise starting with the fader closed and do closed-open-closed, and the opposite, open-closed-open. Which may or may not be components to flares and chirps? maybe someone who is more experienced could analysis what i just said and give so suggestions to help me grow. When I get my turntables on the go, I wanna practice old school beat juggling. I feel like having those skills along with scratching adds a layer to your mixing skills and timing I REALLY MISS DJFORUMS SCRATCH TUTORIALS!!!! |
Len Lukawski 24.12.2011 | Ok, here is a very much warts and all practice video I just did. Don't worry, I can take it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3779pzwJYyA |

Are any of you guys up for posting practice videos in order to get feedback from the rest of the thread members? Obviously there is more value in this for the less expert members. I am more than happy to go first... This could be fun. |
