Who scratches here?

Who scratches here?
Posted on: 22.12.2011 by Len Lukawski
A couple of months ago I decided to start learning to scratch, properly. Not just pushing the record around and hoping for the best (which best describes the previous 17 attempts back in the day). I have consumed hundreds of hours of videos on Youtube, been reading books, signed up for Qbert's SkratchU and practice whenever I can which unfortunately is maybe half an hour a day. I am definitely off the blocks skills-wise but still in skratch primary/elementary school.

So who here scratches?
Are you beginner or Grandmaster?
What are you learning right now?
What's been the hardest technique for you to learn?
How did you or do you learn?
What's your setup?
What do you scratch to?
Would you like to go to dinner?
- I edited this list as I had a repeat question on setups.

Would love to hear people's stories and views on this!

I just use my iPhone 4S' camera and I got from the extra line out of my 05ProIII into my MacBook's line in and record with Audacity.

This is for a little online battle. Still needs much practice. I want to do it on vinyl, but I'm already wearing the record out. Better record it before it gets worse.

Hah thanks, I honestly believe this wasn't even that good. I'm going to try and enter in my town's local DMC, but I don't have Serato (I use Traktor). I may have to quickly find an SL1 box.

Right....time for a video I guess!

So, basically (for the first part), he's mostly creating the rhythm by varying the record movement (and using the crossfader to cut away the pullback)? I'm sort of having troubles following his movements with the crossfader and record at the same time on video <.<

So who here scratches?
I do (and have been sense 1997)

Are you beginner or Grandmaster?
Not to bad... took average of 3rd place in most contest I have been in.

What are you learning right now?
To scratch on controller Jog wheels instead of vinyl.
Also relearning because I took a break from DJing about 3 years ago and im just getting back into it.

What's been the hardest technique for you to learn?
1 and 3 click Flares.

How did you or do you learn?
Well its easier now. I just watch videos, but when I started I had to listen to mix tapes and try to guess how they made that sound. Like the first time I heard a crab scratch and a flare I just tried to Transform really fast. :P

What's your setup?
Analog Setup: Tascam XS-8 & 2 PDX-2000's
Digital/Traktor Setup: NI S2 & TP2

What do you scratch to?
Battle Breaks and Jungle mostly. But I also practice with Hard House, Old School Breaks, & Hardcore to make sure I'm comfortable with all tempo's.

These are good for learning scratches...

He manages to pull off some really smooth scratches without going apeshit on the fader, but I can't for the life of me figure out what sort of scratches they are? Chirps and really fast babies? Cuts/Stabs?

Nice vid in the edit. Those crabs sound crisp.

I've been practicing more flares the past few days. Mainly 1-clicks but some 2-clicks here and there. I'll post a vid in the next few days.

Still struggling going from an open fader directly into a closed fader scratch. I'm hoping it will come easier with time.

Scribbles, Joe Cooleys, and Chirps.

Basically to get it high pitched, you have to move the record fast. Add some fast babies and transforms and you'll get the classic scratched vocal scratches.

Edit: I got bored today.

I am a man of my word. Everything from the skipping tonearm to accidentally flicking the phono/line switch. Video quality matches scratch quality.

Totally understand!

With the transform, as long as your thumb is providing enough resistence against the finger(s) you are using to tap the crossfader open, treat it more like just tapping a rhythm or finger drumming. I believe for a lot of Djs that might be more of a familiar feeling. I know there are drum patterns I find myself doing all the time with fingers and they often find themselves working into a sctach one way, or another.

It's the flares that are putting the marmalade up my arse right now

Pretty much all I am doing here is transforming. You can tell because the crossfader is closed most of the time and only being opened to let the sounds in. The only word of caution is to not get too focused on this as open fader scratches become more of challenge as your hand will automatically go to closed.

Also, it's not necessary to develop a massive gut for this kind of scratch but it does provide a some additional interest for those "niche markets."

Now, all the rest of you get posting and lets start helping each other out!

Thanks for the tip. I've been trying out some transforming, but I find it really hard to find the same fluidity you (and many others) have.

Yours was cool!

I MUST sit down and adjust my Innofader this weekend.

It took MONTHS to get here....took weeks for me to get it in the mixer....and now its been weeks since and I still have not heard it in reality.

But it sure feels nice!

When I get into a rhythm it sounds decent. I am trying to learn to control my tears better. right now I seem to have a slight "push" in between pull backs no matter what speed I am doing it at. Just tried starting to incorporate a 1 click orbit, but seems I am regressing on the basic scratches now, so I am putting that on the shelf for a bit.
Len Lukawski
18.01.2012
but how does it sound?
Ira Alsadi
18.01.2012
I'm calling mine terrible because they are pathetic attempts at me combining scratches. I need to get the basics down better. I do not have hours on end to practice so the first 30 minutes for me is basically relearning the muscle memory from the last practice session I had. I am finding out really quickly how dominant my right hand is. such a difference in record and fader control.

Agreed! I was hoping someone would disagree

I have seen a lot of awful scratching and I wouldn't describe anything posted on here as that. Are we calling our videos awful/horrific/terrible etc just because we aren't hardcore, top tier turntablists?

This may have been mentioned before but have you seen anything by DJ Keltech? It's all about the showmanship there! It's what got me into turntablism in the first place!
