The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

CALLIDE
(System Shock/ RAM Records/ Mix n Blen)

Callide hail’s from the City of Gloucester, and represents as a Drum & Bass DJ and Producer for close to 15 years. With many releases on a range of labels his edgy dance floor based sound has grown to receive much recognition. Setting up his label System Shock Recordings were tracks are focussed specifically for the dance floor, with the A side featuring nothing but tough edged D&B, and the flip focusing on the fast paced Jump Up side of things. As for his style, he is renowned for delving deep into the uncharted territories of Drum and Bass. It’s hard to label him with a particular style, as his sets range from Liquid, to Grime right through to the Darker Side, and more often than not, feature his latest dub plates fresh from his home studio.

LoKo (ProgRAM/ Screwloose)

Born deep in the West country in the small town of Glastonbury, LoKo was bought up surrounded by music. At just 9 months old LoKo was taken to his first Glastonbury festival and since then his musical journey has continued to progress. At the tender age of fourteen LoKo was starting to make a name for himself as an upcoming DJ and this quickly led to him supporting the likes of Pendulum & Goldie. While perfecting his djing skills LoKo wanted more from the music he loved and started producing. most recent venture ending up with him being signed to RAM Records new project "PROGRAM". During this time he has also set up his own label, the Bristol based Screwloose Records.

NEONLIGHT (Black Sun Empire/ Viper/ C4C/ Bad Taste)

Formed of Tobias and Jakob, Neonlight are now one of the Drum and Bass scene’s most highly regarded producing teams. In only three years the German based duo’s killer blend of musicality, attitude and sheer creativity has seen them work with DnB royalty, including labels such as Bad Taste, Trust in Music and Viper, and earned them countless fans in the process. With high profile releases for Lifted, BSE Recordings and Cause4Concern as well as tracks with the likes of Aeph, Inside Info, Hedj and Mefjus in their impressive discography, Neonlight have become a byword for unique, precise Drum and Bass - and there’s much more to come.

I dunno if Enei and Icicle really fit in that list. Same with June Miller, who yes, did really sign to RAM. Commercial Suicide, Shogun Audio (not digging their output much lately), and Critical (especially the sub-label, Modulations) are all pretty good labels, but I don't really believe they fit in the list as they are far less experimental with their output than the others listed. In that list should go Dispatch, Subtitles, etc.

Since a lot of the previously mentioned labels are more on the leftield... Hidden Hawaii has amazing releases, Absys has been doing some good stuff on the deeper tip, CX Digital is a division of Cylon aimed at the more experimental sounds, and you can't forget Alphacut for some solid vinyl-only business and their various sub-labels (457 is awesome for dem dubwise riddims). Also worth checking out is Machinedrum's latest album Vapor City, great stuff though not entirely 170. Om Unit has an album coming out at the end of the month as well. Narratives Music is great and while they have a small catalogue it is pretty well all amazing.

And one final thing. Metalheadz has some amazing releases lined up.

Great to have you back, K!

3D mapping, to be honest, the 3D is more an effect controller if you'd ask me. (Instant Grat maybe? Or hold a little back for the mapping Jester and myself are creating for the Spectra, which should be compatible as well )

All's great, on the brink of releasing the debut EP of RSTRCTD. (Other genre than D&B though)

Dude, it's Kaon, he is one of the reasons for me to make the start post in this thread.

Hai gaiz, long time no post, figured i'd come back to the home base thread instead of starting a fresh one for my piddly question, plus it should always be on the front page of general discussion anyways ^_^

Just got the vci-100 mk2 and a new midifighter 3d, i chose a sweet vci tsi that i'm real happy with, but not sure about which midifighter tsi would be best to go with it. I had a look at the mappings page, but they all seem to be mostly aimed at people who are using the midifighter by itself, and so are not what i'm looking for. Any ideas?

Anyways, hope all is well team ^_^
