The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X
Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead.

We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already.

Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade.

With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB.
Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!"

If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles?
No, kill your idols instead!
There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past.

How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep?
Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are.
There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing.

Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us.

Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996!

Kinda off in another direction, but I've been really getting into Rockwell lately (I know I'm immensely late) but I can't seem to find anything really like it (with the whole "organic" (for lack of a better term) samples for the drums) could someone point me in the right direction.

Lol sorry Im not sure how universal the term brostep is - very common place down here in NZ now though.

Basically brostep is the Gash of dubstep, believe Excision, Datsik, Skism, Bare Noize etc.

All those artists have made mean innovative tunes - dont get me wrong - its just now everybody is trying to make tunes that sound like that, and god that sound is getting old now..

Youtube Skizm - Down with the kids, and that will show you what brostep is all about.

brostep? what tracks fall under this category lol like flux pavilions stuff?
Adolf Hit
09.11.2010
I dont believe that its a case of Dubstep having lost its original creativity, its just now every dick, and the electro Dj next door, who has with a copy of ableton and massive has watched Ruskos how to make average dubstep tutorial and is now making either Rusko-esque wobble, Chemical-esque vowel b-line noise, or brostep.

So pretty much its just a case of diggin a whole bunch deeper for the jems - the beatport top 10 is now just full of the above.

Badman producers are still making baaadman tunes.

But to make up for the influx of aweful dubstep being played by djs who dont understand the music it has been an awesome year for d&b

oh yeah i suppose thats what it is. I like terravita - lockdown and a few others. its at 174 so its not too hard to mix with regular dnb.

im a fan of minimal and jump up the most , as the other sub genres have a bad habit of having similar sounding songs.

I used to believe jump up was dead till i heard link to the past. And i wrote an article around the time i was getting bored of jump and and started preferring minimal.

i like the dubstep from black sun empire, its pretty dark, although as far as i know theres only four tracks released so far, its worth checking out.

2 KJ Chapters just popped up back in LA. KJ- Long Beach and KJ- Hollywood is about to launch. As for our rave scene, some 15 year old prostitot with family ties to government OD'd at EDC this past summer so all parties in LA county are 18+ now which, IMO, is a good change. Not to sound like a dick, but her death was well served. The downer on our healthy rave scene, is that dnb is not getting booked at some of the massives. Case in point- Monster Massive, (Halloween) does not have a single dnb act in their line-up whereas in years past, they would have epic lineups. Insomniac is still booking dnb acts and have branched into dnb one-offs such as Andy C and Bryan Gee at HoB for Thanksgiving

To segue, dnb can be found in legitimate clubs in and around Los Angeles 3-5 evening s a week. Clubs ranging from small dives to world class venues such as The Music Box or The House of Blues.

Werd.

So is Direct Drive and Driven AM around NYC, not to mention Camoflauge every Tuesday at Sullivan Room; used to be at Sin Sin/Leopard Lounge. I was just at a DnB event @ Sullivan Room two Fridays ago and had the time of my life. Also, DJ Seoul opened up a place called Fat Buddha in Alphabet City, although they'll have some other music there besides DnB.

These still happen in and around Orlando. Not too often, and they're usually pretty hush hush, but every now and then.

And parties out in the middle of nowhere in wide open fields too, lol

But it is a sad state for DnB in the area that I live. I started as a DnB DJ back in 97 in NJ. There were only a few evening spots that were DnB centric. Philly had a club that was promoted by 611 Records and impossible to get a guest spot DJing unless you were part of 611 and NYC had the Konkrete Jungle, also impossible to break out into. my only outlet were raves and coffee shops Because of the fricken lawyers in the country, rave is completely dead.
Eventually I had to evolve to Techno and Tech House, and then to Electro (where I can here the old familiar dark and dirty basslines I oh so loved from DnB). The only time I here DnB here now are in car commercials. It's sad. "If you really want to rock the funky beats, the funky beats, the funky beats, beats, rock the funky beats. ..."
Konkrete jungle is still going strong @ Love on McDougal.. But yes in NJ no one wants to risk playing "real" house or any other EDM, even at teen evening s!

BTW, I dont believe raves were outlawed in Cali for long--their scene is healthy. NYC and NJ is just bad for electronic music. Megaclubs are history for the most part (Pacha). 27th street is all bottle service garbage now. I just had this conversation with a friend of mine that we need to bring back warehouse parties...

My dreams came true!

Ever since i started to DJ i wanted to play out at local notorious radio station that airs independent music, edm and well basicaly club music (and surprisingly it's not a small radio station either, they have quite the name on air). I have been fan of this radio station since i was kid, it influenced my roots like crazy. So i am so happy that i wuz invited to play out a set live on air this sunday with my classic selection of deep and liquid-atmospheric tunes. yeiii, to celebrate
