Xonetacular's Setup
Xonetacular's Setup Posted on: 25.11.2011 by Romelia Stankard Now that we can edit threads again I'll post my current setup here for those of you who don't feel like sifting through 26 pages if you are unfortunate enough to be using the default 10 posts per pagedj setup: I need to take updated pictures- looks like this but over here: studio/modular setup as of june 2012 running genome midi on the ipad into ableton out to the modular- such a nice sequencer and very hands on and nice to use on the ipad. I might eventually switch to an expert sleepers digital audio to CV interface for better latency- I believe the latency on the midi/cv converter is more of an issue than over wireless (and genome has stuff built in to compensate) but that's just a guess. Still useable how it is now. modular setup as of july 2012: --------------------------------- original post: It all started three years ago with two Technics 1200 MK2s, a budget numark mixer, and about 15 vinyl records, and Sond MDR-V6 headphones. Quickly I realized vinyl was expensive and I decided to get Traktor Scratch Pro I decided I wanted to upgrade my mixer and get something scratch certified so I got a Mackie d.4 pro My first attempt at a production setup involved ableton live 7, an MPD32, and a Microkorg | |
Francene Klimmek 20.03.2012 | I believe I'm just gonna have the top shelf as a tilted top for both CDJs and the Mac. Working with a width of 58", 2 CDJs and a laptop will be around 43" (not side to side of cause due to the power and USB cables of the laptop). That leaves 15" to play with for the monitors. I have the Rokits and they will be 7" wide each. The remaining 1" will be for errors. The back of your topmost shelf is parallel with the whole unit at the back I guess. I meant it is not overhanging. |

You could build a deeper top shelf to fit the CDJs or add some CDJ stands to mount to the desk. |
Francene Klimmek 21.03.2012 | Yeah. Will all these fit Turntables (Battle style) (two) DJM 700 (one) Cdj 900 (two) Krk rokit 5 (two) Kontrol x1 (one) Laptop 15" (0ne) |

Previous set up was 2 TT, 1 DJm 700, 1 X1, 2 Rokit5. Now I ve got 2 Cdj900s and wondering where it will fit on the Ikea desk. Thanks. |
Larraine Hannum 19.03.2012 | Wow, speechless with this thread. Where-abouts are you from? I should be in the market for some refurbished Turntables in the near future and those blue leds are sexy. |
Reva Poat 17.03.2012 | You want us to suffer and die of jealousy right ? |
Albertina Fay 17.03.2012 | Nice pickup, Xone! Congrats!!! |
Romelia Stankard 17.03.2012 | Well I'll be damned if I have to ever go back to streaming porn. |
France Evoniuk 17.03.2012 | Utorrent being used for perfectly legal purposes of course... |
Romelia Stankard 16.03.2012 | Now I understand why people call it getting infected. Just setup the Virus Ti, this thing is awesome. I'm so glad I switched to a real hardware synth. I haven't spent too much time with it but this synth is so comprehensive and well thought out. Not that I plan on using it much for editing but even the Virus VST is incredibly well thought out and straight forward. I just don't feel inspired on softsynths at all and don't look forward to sitting down and using them with a mouse, in fact I dread it which is probably a big reason why I never really finished anything. Within 10 minutes of sitting down with this thing I am already pumping out amazing sounds and tweaking away. The sound is absolutely awesome, dark, and lush and everything has so much depth. The interface is intuitive and tweaking around on it in 20 seconds has great sounds coming out which I've never got before from any VST and recording and bouncing stuff to audio. It's done exactly what I want and why I bought it and removed the barrier between me and creating music, just playing around with it makes me get up and dance instead of pulling my hair out with VSTs. Between the Ti and Maschine It's some pretty great integration, now I can finally make some music and enjoy it... I've officially run out of space on my desk and have no room for an ipad. I'm really glad I held out to find a Ti desktop instead of buying a keyboard version, it's much better front and center and accessible- the fewer annoyances and hindrances in the process the better and that includes turning to the side to look at a synth. So my next purchase is probably going to be a new desk and I'll be moving my studio to my living room where I have more room and can put it in the optimal location in my apartment for the best sound/monitoring. Then I'll be looking into sound treatment, other monitors, and maybe a hackintosh down the line- even though it is much more tempting to buy more fun stuff like synths. I've gotta keep a lookout for studio desks on craigslist. It seems studio desk are either too ugly, too lacking, or too expensive and unfortunately I haven't found anything yet that is ideal. I want rack space and a nice wide desk with a long shelf for two 24" LCD monitors (maybe 2 27") that can also fit two pairs of studio monitors. I would settle for two large LCDs and one set of studio monitors though. |

Anyway, so when I started using the DJM again I couldn't believe what I was listening to, I figured something was wrong with the connections, I pulled everything out and put it back....still the same.... honestly the sound was (to my ears) so inferior and horrible to what I had become accustomed to.... it was really that bad. It was like playing with a kiddys toy, and the effects, dont get me started. however, Strangely enough with all that the db4 has to offer in effects, I do miss the pioneer crush effect. |

Felipe Rasper 12.03.2012 | I believe it al depends on personel preference. I for one haven't got any problem with the faders and the eq knobs on the Xone series, And i i'm using Xone's for the last 7,5 years. I actually prefer them too the Pioneer wich i believe are too stiff... |
Palma Hanslip 11.03.2012 | That's a nice haul of vinyl mate. |
Romelia Stankard 11.03.2012 | A&H faders are different from pioneer, yes. They are longer and have less resistance- db4 has the same kind of faders as the 92, 4D, etc. Anyway here is a record haul I just picked up- got these all with bags and a usb turntable for $125. Dude was mad cool I responded to an add on craigslist and he just wanted to get rid of them since he was moving and couldn't take them with me so he gave me a good deal. Lots of classic, deep, tribal, and various house from the late 90s to mid 2000s. Apparently this guy was a resident at Space Miami up until mid 2000s so lots of great music and a lot of hard to find vinyl only stuff. it all mixes really well and I'm having a blast digging through it. I also really love mixing vinyl on the DB4- all FX are perfectly synced and having the DB4 auto loopers per channel is awesome to just effortlessly cut loops with one encoder as if it were traktor and not a record. Also just bought a Virus Ti so this will be coming to me this week It's been a good slutty weekend |
Tatum Ansaldo 11.03.2012 | I guess they are a little smaller but I can't say I've thought about it before now. Definitely not a problem or I would have noticed haha! |
Kasi Marget 11.03.2012 | Mmmh, ok that's one "bad point". Thanks for sharing the article and your experience. Last point, I hope you DB2/4 users will be able to clarify : EQ knobs. When looking at pictures, they seem smaller in height than Pioneer's one. Is that true ? With an objective point of view, isn't it disturbing ? What do you prefer ? |
Tatum Ansaldo 11.03.2012 | If you read the skratchworx review of the DB4 they had the same worry, but A&H replied with a clarification of just how high quality the faders are. It's here: http://skratchworx.com/reviews/xone_db4.php They feel fine, though I must say I did prefer the slightly higher resistance of the DJM-800 faders. One thing I have noticed though is that the fader caps seem to come off a little too easily. Anyone else with a DB noticed that? |
Kasi Marget 11.03.2012 | Hey Xonetacular, may I ask you a favor ? I'm about the buy a DB2, but there's one thing that prevents me to do so at the moment. Faders. Since you got a DB4, and I assume the faders are more or less the same, could you record a small video where you push the faders, "slam" (gently ahaha) and stuff. That's weird but they look "weak" and easy to break, while Pioneer faders feel super solid. No stores around me have a DB2/4 on display that I can test, and I really need to see how the faders behave :) |
Romelia Stankard 09.03.2012 | New gear sluttery coming soon. I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on a virus ti desktop but no one is selling one online or they will only sell locally. This is pretty annoying- must resist the urge to buy another synth in the meantime. |

Nereida Jasnoch 26.02.2012 | That krk sub, the S10, is it really worth the money ? Is a bit redundant to have such a sub when have a pair of rokit 8s like you or is it overkill in hindsight ? |
