Traktor Scratch Poor (a.k.a. Ghetto Timecode Control)
Traktor Scratch Poor (a.k.a. Ghetto Timecode Control) Posted on: 09.04.2009 by Aurelia Lenox So after a few hours of tweaking, I have a working timecode vinyl control setup within Traktor Scratch Pro without the Audio8, or any other pricey 4in/4out card. In fact, my external soundcard only has 2 inputs! Since Traktor only allows you to use one sound device at a time, combining your available devices involves a little bit of software trickery. Here's my current setup:
Oh, and a free copy of Traktor Scratch Pro from a friend who bought it and decided he liked Serato better Total: $1360. Here's how my current setup is connected: 1) Technics Deck A: Connect barrel connectors to phono output, then use RCA-to-1/8" to connect to Macbook Pro's stereo line-in. 2) Technics Deck B: Connect barrel connectors to phono output, then use RCA-to-1/8" to connect to HarmonyAudio's stereo line-in. 3) Onto the software trickery! Open up the Audio Midi Setup app in /Applications/Utilities and create an Aggregate Audio Device. More information here: http://www.apple.com/pro/techniques/aggregateaudio/. My Aggregate Device is: Macbook Line-In (2 in, resampled) HarmonyAudio (2 in / 8 out, set as clock) You'll want to set the clock to whatever device you're outputting to, and resample all your other devices to keep them in sync. The order of your devices in the list is that order that Traktor will see the inputs/outputs on the Aggregate Device. So if my list is in the above order, then in Traktor I would see: "Aggregate Device (4 in, 8 out)" ...which would correlate as listed below, for me. Aggregate Device In 0 -- Macbook Line-In Channel 0 Aggregate Device In 1 -- Macbook Line-In Channel 1 Aggregate Device In 2 -- HarmonyAudio In Channel 0 Aggregate Device In 3 -- HarmonyAudio In Channel 1 Aggregate Device Out 0 -- HarmonyAudio Out Channel 0 Aggregate Device Out 1 -- HarmonyAudio Out Channel 1 Aggregate Device Out 2-7 -- HarmonyAudio Out Channel 2-7 You'll likely have a different soundcard, and therefore a different quantity and combination of inputs/outputs, so I'm just defining the connections to clarify my example setup. 4) Now open up Traktor Scratch Pro. Set your audio device to the Aggregate Device, map your Input Routing/Output Routing, and go to Timecode Setup. Should now be seeing a timecode signal for Decks A and B! I had to adjust my inputs until I got a strong enough signal for Traktor to read the timecode. On my HarmonyAudio box I just turned the input gain all the way up, and for the Macbook Pro line-in, I went to Sound Preferences and set it Line-In to 75% gain (just before the 4th tick). Once everything was set, I had a solid, responsive vinyl setup, with a 2.5ms latency. Right now, I'm only using two of my soundcard's outputs into my monitors. For when I use this in a club, I would just use the HarmonyAudio's 8 outputs into the club mixer. 4 for Decks A&B into the mixer, 2 for monitoring and 2 for rec/ other line out. I'll put a vid of this setup working if anybody wants it, but a lot of you should have similar enough gear to try this out for yourselves. Good luck! -- Charlie Tran, Brooklyn bedroom DJ / web developer | |

Tanner Adis 02.06.2012 | My Ghetto time code as a proof of concept. Traktor 2.5 using an m-audio torq conectiv. Check out the video below |
Stacy Mcilvaine 02.06.2012 | So I am looking for a used Audio 8 but I read this and being a longtime Serato user ( I believe I am going full out Traktor and gonna sell My Sl1) I gave this a shot. I am a Techno Guy who wants 4 synced decks to DJ with my VCM-600 but I also want to control the start of mixes and be able to scratch when I want and use the VCM-600 as an Internal Mixer. So I have a SL1 and I followed the Registry change and it did work. However the Vinyl signal is extremely low. Darn thing is it does work but how can I get the signal higher? Maybe tampering with the code? C: all users /App. data/ Native Inst./Traktor???? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?> <NIXML><TraktorSettings> <Entry Name="Scratch.Input.Mode" Type="1" Value="0"></Entry> </TraktorSettings> </NIXML> ??????????????? In the video with the Behringer mixer there were nice circles? My video not so much.. It works but eh.. |
Delphine Mauser 19.11.2010 | That seems to be the rub. |
Elisabeth Ferrigno 19.11.2010 | What happens when you want to use a mic? Or a sampler? Or an Audio 2/ Audio 4? As Steve Jobs would say, it's a bag full of hurt! |
Delphine Mauser 19.11.2010 | I dont have extra RCA cables at the moment, but I believe you can run Out 1/2 to IN 5/6 and OUT 3/4 to IN 7/8 on the Audio 8 and then set up Ableton to capture the 5/6 and 7/8 inputs. However, the Audio 8 may not let you use 5/7 and 7/8 as inputs at the same time? Dont remember right now. |
Elisabeth Ferrigno 19.11.2010 | JuanSOLO: Correct, you won't be able to do that. I just installed 1.2.7 with my fingers crossed, but nope, no smart mixing this Christmas. I stumbled upon another thread that made me sick to my stomach. People have actually purchased two soundcards just to record/Smart Mix with timecode! I wasn't as upset about this before, but reading over these threads, I see that I'm not as much of an edge case as I originally thought. It seems NI didn't bother to pay any mind to fixing routing, again leaving paying users in the cold (Nobody wanting to route with their Audio 8 is pirating TSP, period.). While Ableton and Serato users Smart Mix their hearts out, NI doesn't seem interested, at all. This really pains me to say it, but I almost wish I went with SSL instead (even though it sounds horrible, etc). It appears that TSP is on life support anyway (retailing for $299 with the a8 now that the s4 is out), NI should fix this (just enable timecode on any interface name as long as the NI A4/A8 driver reports a connected interface (and if you're anal about it, as long as it's not an aggregate) ) before they push out their last update of TSP Here's hoping 1.2.8 doesn't suck/ever happens :/ |
Delphine Mauser 12.11.2010 | Anyone? |
Delphine Mauser 09.11.2010 | OK so it's been a while since I've been using TSP. I gave Ms Pinky my best shot and now I am back to Traktor. If using Vinyl control, is it no longer possible to route Traktor as separate decks to Ableton, using Soundflower and the Audio 8 combined in an aggregate device named Audio 8 DJ? |
rolando menendez 27.10.2010 | nice work... |
Mercy Dudik 25.10.2010 | Ah I see, one other option would be to upgrade to a Traktor certified mixer, the list is available here http://www.native-instruments.com/in...ed&L=1&rdrctd= They all have built in sound cards and will work with TSP without the Audio 8 |
Tiara Leblance 24.10.2010 | Thanks for your reply! Ok, then i'm gonna use my audio8. My plan was to sell the audio8 and get an a&h xone 2d instead of, but if this doesn't work i will buy another xone 1d. |
Mercy Dudik 24.10.2010 | You have to use the Audio 8 with the new updates I'm pretty sure, but if you have it why not use it! |
Tiara Leblance 23.10.2010 | Hey there, just read through the thread and got a little question. My current setup consists of: 1 x rane ttm 56 2 x technics 1210 1 x traktor scratch pro 1.2.6 1 x audio 8 1 x allen & heath 1d Now i want to buy a second allen & heath xone 1d controller for extended midi control. I thought of buying an allen&heath xone 2d controller/interface. Is it still possible to use any interface with tsp 1.2.6? I tried to use my focusrite saffire 40 firewire interface yesterday but it didn't work. My tsp says "scratch disabled". Is there a step by step guide to use any soundcard with tsp that is even more idiot-proof than the one on the first page? Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english! |
nayit ruiz jaramillo 20.06.2010 | Yeah I agree 100% with all of the above. |
Xavier Emanuels 19.06.2010 | I doubt there will be any big new revisions anytime soon, i believe its much more likey we will see better maschine intergration before we see a new tpro. The money is in selling the hardware not the software, so id expect to see more intergration and more hardware comming out of NI over new software. Aaannnnyway this is getting off topic guys. Back on topic i hope native instruments changes the audio 4 detection for the audio 4 to act more as a dongke so power users can still route to live and use timecode at the same time. |
nayit ruiz jaramillo 19.06.2010 | LOL. DJTTs is the hub of the rumour mill. |

nayit ruiz jaramillo 19.06.2010 | Lol I'm just surmising . I'm just saying that I believe that the next big version will be another step forward and will be worth the update. Where as 1.2.2 to 1.2.6 was mainly fixes and controller implimentation. I have no info and that is the truth. |

So you can choose to believe or not I don't care. This is easily patched out so that REG edit would make no difference. I have a pretty decent source for this knowledge they go by the name of Native Instruments, you may have heard of them ? And one last thing, I haven't flamed YOU or said one uncivil word (as has been mentioned by other member) so I believe telling ne to STFU is very uneccasary and disrespectful to another member of this community . Believe me I will not be shutting up. I suggest follow community rules on conduct to other members and that you speak to me in the civil manner I have spoken to you. |
Sona Nebenzahl 19.06.2010 | Is this REG EDIT hack easily patched out? YES... Yet again NI will have to waste time patching this out but it is easily done. - I believe no, becuase without any device ID check theres no chance to proove if a True Audio 8/4 is conected Oh and one last thing PET, you werent the first to do this, neither were you the first to put it up on the the internet so, no first prize for you. - I only want to share my found with you. but if you dont like to know that, Delete it! DONT FLAME ABOUT CRACKS OR HACKS! I, bought my TSP with the Audio 8, so STFU. |
nayit ruiz jaramillo 16.06.2010 | No worries man. Obviously my opinion on this matter is biased and everyone knows that so i aint getting into discussions (theres just no point) but i will correct any factual inaccuracies so thats why i posted. Cool..! |

The only way it is possible to use a non-NI soundcard is if the application is hacked or there is a workaround like the REG workaround. Most people that have used a Timecode hack have had very mixed results because the soundcard is not made specifically for timecode. That is irrelevant though i guess. So... anyway, yeah NI Audio 8 or 4 or Certified Mixer only. It is of course, not illegal. Morally, thats a different question. Is this REG EDIT hack easily patched out? YES... Yet again NI will have to waste time patching this out but it is easily done. The original Ghetto hack has been proved to be responsible for many users staying on 1.2.2 especially those using Cracks. This is why we have many people asking for Support who havent updated to 1.2.6. Make no mistake this is very very common. This is also one of the reasons for the myth that has circulated that 1.2.2 was a more stable release. Believe me this is horse-shit. 1.2.2 was as stable as any release. They have all been stable. There have been bugs in builds (of course) but the myths that have been spread are just that. People having issues with Traktor have been having issue that have been irrelevant to what build it was. Now that there is a hack for timecode in 1.2.6 its fair to assume that there will be a lot of people updating to this build and the demand for Cracked versions of 1.2.6 will soar. Again there will be a period where people stay on 1.2.6 because of this hack. Its anyones choice to believe me or not but the facts are the facts. These hacks have encouraged people to use the shitty cracks and are contributing to the bad rap that Traktor gets. Thankfully there are enough legit Traktor users making the product the best selling award winning DVS that it is and addressing the negative. Of course if this hack is not patched out people will continue to upgrade and the crackers and hackers will continue to bring out updated versions. But... like i said this can be patched out. That is a fact. The thing is the difference between 1.2.2 and 1.2.6 is probably not enough to tempt people to go legit and use the far superior Audio 8/4. The difference between 1.2.6 and 'X' will be a wholly different story. Oh and one last thing PET, you werent the first to do this, neither were you the first to put it up on the the internet so, no first prize for you. |
Jayne Yellowhair 16.06.2010 | Yeah, your point is valid (don't HAVE to use certified card) but the point by NI is that they don't want to be responsible for people using bad sound cards.. So they fully support some sound cards to make sure every one who uses it is 100% satisfied. Well, hackers will hack.. yeah |
Wanda Insel 16.06.2010 | Man, having not read this thread at all before I have just spent the last hour reading it. Very interesting stuff as Double Dutch said, i have gleaned a few points though that someone maybe able to clear up: 1) Traktor never state that you HAVE to use their cards, only that some are certified, therefore I'm still lost as to what is the problem? You buy the software and the TC vinyls, surely all you are doing is routing the sound in so why does this have to be NI cert'd? 2) Also I believe if anyone really wants to do this and cheat the system then they will just download cracks, hacks, smacks..... whatever you want to call them? I have always loved the honesty of people on here towards official software and I'm of the same opinion that piracy is non defendable but I just want it clearing up why the sound card is such a biggy? p.s I'm not trying to trawl old arguments but being totally separate from all of this (ie don't use timecode, VCI only + traktor, don't understand programming etc etc) just want to understand? p.p.s all my stuff is official and paid for. |
