Let the others know your setup here:

What kind of computer and cable did you use? Any specific steps you found helpful?

Thanks for sharing!

you can use any VCI upgrade chip, they're all the same.

My only question is that can I use my friends upgrade kit?

Thanks in advance!

I fixed it! Stange things happen sometimes...

Photojojo: I tried your recommendation with the advancedsetup. Changed the delay to 1000 - still the same problem. Then I played with some values, increasing and decreasing incrementally - for almost half an hour. But, unfortunately to no avail. Then I noticed that the green message (which I always saw only for a tenth of a second every time) does not say "upgrade successful", but instead: "connection successful". Briefly after, Renasas just crashed each and every time.

Out of pure desparation I went for one more try, choosing COM3 (although I knew that I was on COM1 and COM3 could not possibly work since it is used by Bluetooth on my machine). As expected, the connection wasn't successful. Still eager to succeed, I switched it back to COM1 and...it worked. Mysteriously.

Did you make the changes suggested in the advancedsetup.exe? I had crashing problems on mine and that's what seemed to fix it.

Agreed fullenglishpint,

I also have the feeling that this abnormal behaviour of the flash utility is a sign of an incomplete installation of the new firmware.

I'm asking myself however why the internal routines and the parsed output of the utility announce a successful "upgrade complete" message (in green), and one tenth of a second later cause Renesas to terminate itself.

Is there any finalization of the flashing done by the utility after official completion which I am missing? Could I experiment with different settings within the utility?

All opinions are more than welcome, thx!

The software shouldn't terminate at the end of the process, and if the VCI isn't turning on it sounds like the firmware wasn't properly installed. Unfortunately it seems that almost any setup is capable of deleting the old FW, but it gets temperamental when installing the new one.

Guys,

I own a black VCI-100, standard model shipped by Vestax. So no SE, and no FW1.3 installed. I guess it was 1.2 or even 1.1 (I never checked). Now I got my firmware upgrade kit, a serial-serial cable and the 1.4 FW. After following the video instructions (the cable harness is really a tough one!!), everything worked fine on my XP SP3 machine.

Through COM1, the 1.4 FW was written correctly, but after the success message in the end the software terminated itself. Is this normal behaviour?

The current status is that my VCI does not power up anymore.

Suggestions, anyone?

I found that another user faced a similar problem:

put it back together to see if the firmware worked and the jog were red, but the toggle button was doing nothing. took it apart... ran the programme again and it dont the same. 'upgrade complete' 'renesas encountered a problem' and the programme closed.

now when i turn the vci on there no power to it at all.

does anyone have any advice that i can try next?

im going to email the IT department in work today and see if they will let me try it in work. i'd just do it without letting them know but i need to get renesas installed on a comp and dont get admin rights in work. boo!

Was finally successful after a lot of trouble with a cheap USB to serial cable based on the Prolific chipset and driver.
Used a mate's desktop running WinXP SP3, hooked the VCI up with a standard serial cable instead, and the flashing process zipped through on the default port (COM1)!
As serial ports aren't supposed to be hot plug technology (I believe), I restarted the computer after doing the physical connections. Not sure if it was needed though.

Some comments have noted that turning the VCI on into boot mode is difficult if the buttons or jog wheels are in contact with something.
I realised that if you place the top part of the VCI on top on the bottom plate like this:

(___________________) <- top plate, upside down and PCBs facing up
[__________________] <- bottom plate

The buttons and jog wheels are suspended perfectly!
Turning the sensitivity knobs way down might help too, just in case.

Hope that helps

just flashed 2 vci's to 1.4. it was a bit of a journey but well worth it. i dusted off the old pc laptop, turned it on and it wasnt lookin too good, so i gave it a fresh install of XP. next i try to download the flash kit, but of course, i only have winXP sp2, and need the sp3. so i dl the sp3 upgrade, and finally get to my first attempt. for the first flash i was getting multiple errors, but they mostly turned out to be my fault (didnt install the serial cable drivers, then forgot to power on the vci the second time, had to change the delay rate, etc etc). after about an hour i finally get the thing to flash... second vci took about 5 minutes

now to fix my mappings.... but thats gonna have to wait until tomorrow.

but until then.. all i can say is.... DISCOOOOO MODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All is good. Used a serial to USB converter cable and my PC running XP SP3, no probs upgrading the firmware, but I do agree with Djproben and TheCurse. That cable harness was a evening mare to get off. Took me 20 mins to get that badboy outa there! Luvin the new firmware, jolly good job DaveX and DJTT. Respect.

I updated with no problems at all, i just followed the simple instructions. I use win7 64 bit.The cable inside the VCI was a bit hard to get off though i must admit. I didn't even know my new PC had a serial port until now, and i had to dig around for an old serial cable, but i found one in the end hehee

Only thing to notice is after the page on which you should leave everything as it is, another page appeared on which i also left everything as it was, which than worked fine for me. But i didnt see that page in the youtube video where you went through all the steps.

Another "probem" was to pull off the cable to connect the firmware updater.
that thing was really hard to pull off. I guess i was close to break it..

Good work though!

Cheers
Yeah I forgot to mention that -- in the video it looks like the cable just comes off, but that was a beeeeeeeeyotch to get off there. It definitely needed to be forced a bit, or at least aggressively nudged

Successful. Will admit that using a serial is a pain in the butt... It took a few tries to get the app to connect correctly, but other than that it went well.

Will admit that you guys cleaned up well on the Arcade mod.

Finally successful in upgrading to 1.4. This took the better part of two days. Honestly the most frustrating part was dealing with Windows. I'm a Mac guy and don't have a windows machine; finally got windows installed on the mac via parallels. I don't know how you windows people deal with that os lol... even running it in a separate window it managed to be annoying as hell ... Anyway here are some of the problems I had:

- I had an old Keyspan Serial/USB adapter. It was broken. Took a couple hours of fiddling to figure that one out. Found a cheap Chinese one for $11 and it worked though I had a lot of trouble. The main thing I got stuck on was a timeout error 15005 -- the fix on this page http://www.djranking s.com/community /sho...?t=872&page=10 from alex.ketch solved it, so glory be!

- Note if you've put on an overlay you might have to cut around the screws depending how perfectly it fit. I had a hard time getting a couple screws out until I realized they were being held down by a tiny bit of the overlay, I used an exacto knife to cut around it.

- the right jog wheel was messed up after I put everything back together. Both pitch bend and scratch were happening at the same time, and the effects buttons slice/echo didn't work at all because the jog wheel was still moving the track around. I had to get a tiny flat screwdriver and mess with the touch sensor level on the back of the unit; that fixed it perfectly.

- the "key" knob no longer works. This sucks because I like using that knob... hoping this is just a problem in the mapping as the filter knobs work fine, but shift+filter no longer adjusts the key appropriately. It sounds like others have this problem too?

Otherwise, I'm good to go. USB-serial adapter cords are a pain in the ass but they will work with the right coaxing. If someone develops a Mac version of the flash program I'll be much happier next time I have to flash

Just did the upgrade to firmware 1.4. Pretty painless. The shift + filter = key bug is present for me with the specs listed below. Otherwise....brilliant. post a fix if you have one! Thanks

Got my firmware upgrade and overlay today, took a while but got 1.3 installed and it's so good to have all the extra functions, even the fabled 4th effect button! Looks sweet with the overlay too

Thanks to Alex.Ketch for your post, I had all the same issues and it saved me a lot of time.

Finally updated to FW 1.3 this week after having the kit for about a year (lazy).

Used the same Maplins USB-Serial cable and it worked first time no issues.

Checked the COM Port in Device Manager and that was it.

Also took my jogwheels to pieces and cleaned them.

All with the DJTTs tutorial videos... Cheers Guys.

I used win xp sp2 and the unbranded "USB Serial Converter" from Maplin electronics UK. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29968
The one i bought in-store had blue connectors with a silver cable.
After installing the drivers from the disk provided then restarting, it was still showing a driver error, so i went into device manager and reinstalled the driver from there, using the provided cd and it worked fine.

It defaulted to com5 (i checked first in device manager), but i had to restart Renesas in order for it to show in the drop down.

Once that was ok, and i very carefully followed all the video steps, it worked perfectly 1st time!

After testing, all the faderfx work propperly now and it is a dream to use.
There is the odd bug but thats a mapping thing.
