Super Knob TSI using Loop Recorder
Super Knob TSI using Loop Recorder Posted on: 28.03.2011 by Julissa Serrone Attached is a TSI to use the Loop Recorder and buttons as a super knob for effects and 4 effect presets. Props to BigBeatzz who has been working on this idea for some time now and to Yul for breaking down how to map all of this.I tried to keep this pretty simple and could use some ideas on different effects presets. I'm not a effects happy person so the purpose of this was to have 4 buttons I can go to, turn a knob and be good to go. This TSI is set for use with two effects banks. FX 1 in chained and FX 2 in Advanced. Once loaded by default the LR works as normal. Once you load a track press the button under D/W for FX 1 and it should start to flash (the flashing is mapped to beatphase monitor so you need a track playing). Once this button is flashing the Loop Recorder is no longer a LR but a super knob. As of now Size = a Super Delay Undo = Army of Me's Whoosh mapping REC = Beatmasher Play = Blank You will notice all buttons are lit solid, once pressed the button will flash so you know what button is "on". I could use some ideas on some other effects presets or ways to improve the mapping. Looking fwd to some new effects coming out on TP2!!! Again props to BigBeatzz. | |
Forrest Kuepper 16.05.2011 | Just wondering how you guys use this on your set, I only use the army of me woosh and end it with an echo freeze. sample here http://snd.sc/jCRgLI |
Karolis Petrauskas 16.05.2011 | I'm glad it worked out for you...enjoy. |

Karolis Petrauskas 11.05.2011 | I'm alive....here is a TSI without the blinking lights for T2. I've been ill so I'm taking it easy and haven't paid much attention to this. I'll be back in action in a couple of weeks. |
Tina Sereal 10.05.2011 | Hey guys, Any updates on the mapping, or did everyone die simultaneously? |

Joannie Brague 30.04.2011 | Big any updates on this. Or do you have any ideas how we can have a toggle modifier for the entire super knob section? I've been trying to figure it out for the past couple of days... Nada |
Janella Schlappich 26.04.2011 | i totally agree with victoryrisen. I enjoy the 1-button-allfxon. The flashing led was the only issue. I also modified the activation mode from direct to toggle, so i can have better control over a transition using the AoM woosh. IMO using shift+loopknob is a bit unconfortable, as u have both hands busy. I wish i could have 4 hands |

Julissa Serrone 25.04.2011 | ^ Yes. This was my original mapping. Shift (on desired deck) + Preset Button Turn ON th effects and assigned them. One thing I messed up and perhaps you can do things better for you workflow is that the preset buttons turned on the effects without shift. So shift was only needed to assign it to a deck. The issue I had was not have LED feedback when using FX 3 and 4 and not knowing what Shit to press and then I'd have FX on, but not assigned and vice versa. In the end I ended up with the most basic way of doing it. FX 1 and 2. I assign them to the decks like I would any other FX and just use the preset buttons and knob. Keeps working with a more stadard workflow and not having to remember what buttons I pressed. But yes. Shift (of deck) + preset = assign, works. So does modifier under D/W to turn on the super center. |

What if when u press shift plus dry wet say on deck a it activates super knob mode for that deck that way you don't even have to fuss with the fx assign buttons. And if u press shift plus dry wet on deck b You active super knob mode for deck b. I believe something like that would make it a lot less confusing than dealing with the fx assign buttons. If u wanted to use it for deck c and d maybe a shift plus deck c would activate deck c or shift plus deck d would work for deck d. Although to be honest I only use c/d for very simple things where I wouldn't need super knobs. |

OFF = everything works native to include the Loop Recorder. Press the button and it flashes (Beat Phase Monitor so you need to have a track playing) and that turns "on" the super center features and blocks the loop recorder functions. You could the same. When I first did this, I had the "ON" button make the buttons under each chained FX flash and I used those as my presests and left the Loop Recorder untouched. Ended up not liking it. Point is - that button works great as a toggle modifier and then you could use the buttons in native mode. |

Janella Schlappich 25.04.2011 | yesterday i used the new mapping in a 2 hr set, actually the flashing light is pretty confusing, and happens i have to check if the fx units are on or not directly on the screen. Maybe would be better without the 2nd flashing led. |
Joannie Brague 24.04.2011 | How do we use the fx assign buttons as regular fx assign? In other words is there a way to get out of fx super knob mode and use my loop recorder and fx assign buttons as normal? |
Karolis Petrauskas 24.04.2011 | Hey guys...happy Easter! Would it be easier if the on buttons were lit up all the time? I find it a bit less confusing because all that would change is the on/off blinking state. I tested for a few minutes today and I can get it to work that way as long as music is playing. |

Janella Schlappich 24.04.2011 | the mapping works great, the flashing led bug is removed by activating and deactivating the effects. I can use one hand holding play while moving the knob using the other one for the transition, but maybe the toggle mode would be much more comfortable. If i switch the "FX on" parameter from hold to toggle is enough? |
Julissa Serrone 23.04.2011 | Beatzzz... Ok got a chance to play with this today. Thoughts: Assign - works great. I believe that's the solution - just assign all the decks. I got confused a few times remember between button 1 and 2 since the are opposites on each side. When I turned on the S4 the off buttons were flashing. It looked dope, but once I turned on effects and then turned them off they were off. Would be neat if they just stayed flashing the whole time. Then it's obvious you have to press the OTHER button to turn them on. Effects -- how come you have them on hold vs. toggle. For me (and this is all taste) I would rather use the superknob and have the other hand free. Either to do a filter, fuck with the key/pitch etc. Delay Freeze is a winner. Will add it to one of my free buttons. Victory. The neat thing about a "superknob" is to have it control as many parameters at once with just one knob (and in this case one button). The delay I have mapped has delay in advanced and iceverb and Delay T3 in chained and I believe it sounds a tad wetter than the normal delay. It would be a mission to load them and turn three knobs at once. What I've done also is load effects I would maybe use in combination. So for example, if I like to do delay, but some reverb sometimes sounds cool I will load the super delay and leave reverb turned off then manualy turn it on --- but the super knob still controls the dry/wet. So my one super "combo" has more than one use/sound to it. I personally am not a big effects guy and I know Beatzz isn't either. Delay, Referb, Filter and some variations of each is about it. I had an idea of putting a super combo together but haven't tried it out yet with delay and having transpose stretch loaded to the middle 50% where it's even and when the delay and super knob pass the halfway mark the transpose stretch kicks in (soft takeover) and then that delay sound will also have an elevated pitch. Have to try a few things, maybe some filter up top also to really get it to skreetch. Beatzz, you da man brother. I'm gonna steal the flashing assign lights from you |

And for that, I really enjoy the AoM Whoosh and Echo Freeze. I haven't really found any great uses for Echo or Reverb, just because I can press those on my own (where as it's a little more difficult with three combo effects in AoM's Whoosh); so if you're using them for something awesome, please let me know. So, in my opinion, I would do away with the Echo and Reverb in place of something more useful for transitions. Also, I hate to do this, but I don't have any suggestions as to what should replace those. I only know that I am personally using them for transitions (which will be great when I get a MF side by side with this mapping) in my mixes and whatnot. Let me know what you believe, and thanks again for your work on this mapping. |

The issue is we only have 4 buttons. Right now I believe the Army of me, the delay and the freeze are very useful. The reverb I believe can go if needed because the armyofme whoosh can be used in the same capacity. I'm up for ideas, I really want to make this something awesome but mostly useful. |
Tina Sereal 23.04.2011 | Bigbeatzz, Haze, Army of Me, I don't know if you guys (and ladies) have seen, but there was another thread that explored all the Super Combos out there. They seemed to unlock all of them, even going as far as making a spoiler video to show them off. Anyways, I thought you guys might want to see it if you haven't so that way we could explore more options for the Super Knob. Here's the link: http://www.djranking s.com/community /sho...+combos&page=2 |
Julissa Serrone 22.04.2011 | Damn homeboy....you went to work today. I'll check it out in the morning fo'sho! |
Karolis Petrauskas 22.04.2011 | OK. Two new files hot off the presses: Size (Hold Down) + Turn the Dry/Wet Knob = Army Of Me Whoosh Rec (Hold Down) = Echo -- You can also turn the knob while pressing Play (Hold Down) = Reverb -- You can also turn the knob while pressing Undo (Toggles) = Echo Freeze Whats new? You can know choose to assign all of the effects to each channel by using the 1 & 2 buttons next to the gain knob. Channels C & A: Button 1 = All Units Assigned to Deck Button 2 = All Units Off (Blinking Button) Channels B & D: Button 1 = All Units Off (Blinking Button) Button 2 = All Units Assigned to Deck I tested this and it seemed to work well. It's best to train yourself that the blinking button will turn off the effect. Hitting the regular button will also work but the opposite button will continue blinking. I can also turn off the blinking but I figures it would be a good reference in a dark booth. If it's too busy I will create a non blink version. To Install: Click import in the bottom of your preferences, find the file and enjoy the goodness. Install appropriate version to your copy of traktor. The only difference is the T2 has the new effects in the list and will load properly. Issues: Sometimes when importing to T2 effect assignments in the S4 firmware goes wacky. It will act like there are only 2 units assigned to work. What I found is you can go into your preferences, switch back to 2 effect units and then switch back again to 4 effect units. This solved my issue in seconds. It's a super easy way to fix the problem; otherwise a reboot of your system should solve the issue. This will only happen the first time so first timers fear not! Also I'm up for ideas, it was tricky to get this to work. Most of the upper part of the S4 is very restricted in the way it works. |

Julissa Serrone 22.04.2011 | Smitten great idea. Really alot of the questions are answered in ArmyofMe's superknob Youtube Vid. It's where this really spun off from since we had a vid that it worked. Beatzz had been talking about doing this for a while, even when we both had VCI-300's -- but we always came back to AofM'e's vid. I'd be happy to do some writing and a step by step, it'll take me a few days this weekend to put somethings together. My thoughts: 1. What is a superknob 2. How to do a simple map of one knob controlling multiple parameters and 2 Dry/wets 3. How to map a button "preset" - load effects, load set parameter, turn on effect 4. Possible ways to assign FX decks 5. A few work arounds we had to do with LED feedback. That's superknobs in general. For the S4 perhaps also a section on "canceling out" the native map with opposite user commands mapped. Ok...it's a bit of writing. |
Len Lukawski 22.04.2011 | I can start drafting something over the next few days and we'll leave the real detail out 'til you guys get to a point of feeling you have a solid configuration. I will work back through the threads to see what I can extract. I can also hit you up with questions that you can answer at your convenience (I also have a 2 year old so I know there's really no such thing as convenience). When we have something solid we can post it here and wherever else you guys feel it makes sense. |

Len Lukawski 22.04.2011 | Chaps - forgive me if I have missed something here.... There has clearly been a lot of great work done by Mr Beatzz and Mr Haze and I wondered if any has (or might consider) writing an article on that covers a) what supernob does b) how to implement it and c) how to install/faq. I have found myself getting a little lost in the threads and with ppl interjecting about their own environments it's becoming tricky to strip out the essential info. I know this is a work in progress and something that will continue to evolve but it might be cool to document what's there now. I would be happy to help with any writing/editing if you guys would be up for it. I believe this is a really cool project and there's a ton of people who would likely want to use it! Keep up the good work. SmiTTTen |
