Super Knob TSI using Loop Recorder
Super Knob TSI using Loop Recorder Posted on: 28.03.2011 by Julissa Serrone Attached is a TSI to use the Loop Recorder and buttons as a super knob for effects and 4 effect presets. Props to BigBeatzz who has been working on this idea for some time now and to Yul for breaking down how to map all of this.I tried to keep this pretty simple and could use some ideas on different effects presets. I'm not a effects happy person so the purpose of this was to have 4 buttons I can go to, turn a knob and be good to go. This TSI is set for use with two effects banks. FX 1 in chained and FX 2 in Advanced. Once loaded by default the LR works as normal. Once you load a track press the button under D/W for FX 1 and it should start to flash (the flashing is mapped to beatphase monitor so you need a track playing). Once this button is flashing the Loop Recorder is no longer a LR but a super knob. As of now Size = a Super Delay Undo = Army of Me's Whoosh mapping REC = Beatmasher Play = Blank You will notice all buttons are lit solid, once pressed the button will flash so you know what button is "on". I could use some ideas on some other effects presets or ways to improve the mapping. Looking fwd to some new effects coming out on TP2!!! Again props to BigBeatzz. | |

Julissa Serrone 12.08.2011 | Sweet man. Glad it worked and your diggin it! |
Jaclyn Minjarez 13.08.2011 | I know this mapping has been up for sometime, but I just gave it a play this morning and love it. Worked perfect for me and really adds some creativity right at your fingertips. I wasn't using the loop recorder anyway. Great add to my setup. Thanks guys. |
Karolis Petrauskas 14.07.2011 | I'm not on my computer right now, i'll check it out and post later. if you change your effects it may affect the way your midi fighter works. It may be best if you into the mapping and change the "select effect" to the proper ones in your list. It shouldn't take long to do...maybe 15 minutes tops. |
Romelia Stankard 14.07.2011 | It won't work for me... can you post a screenshot of your effects order in traktor? thats the issue i had with the midifighter and when i changed the order as show on here it worked. what order do you have? |

Julissa Serrone 08.07.2011 | Well I believe the intent of the thread when we first put it up was to say "hey guys I believe we're on to something here" and really weren't sure of the best way to implement it so we posted a few versions, some ideas and hoped some other folks would jump and add their flavor to the mapping. Beatzz other mapping got a huge push recently from Loop. So I don't believe the thread is dead. It's the only thread in the WORLD that has the S4 loop recorder as a super knob. Now that's dope! .......ok maybe not the world, but you know what I mean. |
Karolis Petrauskas 08.07.2011 | It's on hold temporarily, I have been dealing with some things and haven't gotten around to working on this more. The mapping process takes some thought and is also time consuming. Lately I've been using a Midifighter mapping for my Maschine. What functions are you guys looking for? |
Tina Sereal 08.07.2011 | I believe the thread is dead. Bigbeatzz, the original guys who worked on the mapping (?) started working a mapping that's fairly similar called "Kontrol S4 Super Effects Mapping" It can be found here: http://www.djranking s.com/community /sho...t=31451&page=5 |
Khadijah Wojtach 08.07.2011 | Just got my S4 yesterday and instantly started looking for custom mappings. Is this thread dead? I've tried the mappings from the first two pages and though they are beta, they still work great I'll have to read up on this thread before I try the newer versions! |
Libbie Deutchman 16.06.2011 | Thanks guys for the idea. I didn't end up using the TSI you came up with, but it was really helpful to learn from. I've got mine set up so you hit the FX 2 button on Deck A and it turns the Loop Recorder Dry/Wet into armyofme's Whoosh, then Delete hits the Freeze. Nice and simple, couldn't have done it without you folks paving the way. Thanks for sharing! |
Len Lukawski 16.06.2011 | And when you do I will be the first one to give my knob a TSI'ing like it's never had before. |
Karolis Petrauskas 16.06.2011 | ^^ Thank you ^^ @ smitten, I agree with you that this thread is a mess. When I get a chance I'll try and post a clear tutorial and video. |
Klara Neiffer 16.06.2011 | Sorry ! I would like to say : The combo is realy great !!! Sorry for my bad english I have said the inverse of what I would like to tell ^^ @Bigbeatzz : Nice Job I hope adds my contribution on this mapping when I got time +++ |
Len Lukawski 16.06.2011 | I have to be honest, I gave up on this thread a while back. Its an awesome project and I would love to REALLY try it out but there's too many intersecting conversations. Any chance you guys can do a video? Not sure if you have the gear and if not, maybe find someone who does (armyofme?) Not being at all critical here - just wanna throw out some feedback. |
Karolis Petrauskas 16.06.2011 | Are you sure you loading it correctly? The combo should sound like a whoosh. If it doesn't maybe the effects are selected incorrectly. |
Klara Neiffer 16.06.2011 | Hi all ! I've just tested the latest tsi file (no blink for T2) and it works realy nice ! It's realy cool to re-found some functions of my latest vestax ^^ Realy good jobs ! PS : The combo is awful ! ! ! Edit : My T2 crashing a couple of times for 4-5 sec ^^ |
Forrest Kuepper 13.06.2011 | how can i go back to the deafult mapping or is there a way to toggle this on/off? |
Karolis Petrauskas 11.06.2011 | It should work on C&D, use the 1 & 2 effect assign buttons to turn it on. You can sync everything up by pressing the unlit button on that deck. The lit button acts as an effect unit toggle for all 4 units. I agree I have to write out a good tutorial, i've just been very busy. |
Dj Tykarma 11.06.2011 | Hi, I just tested the No_blinks tsi on TS2. It works well for me, I imported it twice with the bottom import button and switched-off/on my S4 just to make sure I've got no issues at all. And I had none Now my understanding is that the mapping does load some FX on the 1/2 FX slots but only 3 and 4 are used for the Super Knob part. So I can choose whatever FX I want on FX1 and FX2 and have them assigned to deck A or B, while still being able to use the Super Knob thing without having to re-import or revert anything. I'm I getting it right ? Also, is the Super Knob supposed to work on decks C and D ? I noticed only half of the FX are working right now. BTW, great work, needs some clear versioning and .zip packaging with brief README for instructions. |

So what we and others have done is create a midi mapping that goes next to the Native mapping.
Have you all seen the answers from 'traktor's on the record' session at NI's community ? Interesting. |
Julissa Serrone 10.06.2011 | Ok in "Native" Mode the S4 communicates to Traktor via NHL (a Native Instruments protocol similar to HID). You can not custom map the NHL mapping. So what we and others have done is create a midi mapping that goes next to the Native mapping. What this mapping does is that it has the negative/opposite mapping to certain buttons. Then it has what we want it to do as well. For example The loop recorder record button. In NHL when you press it, it turns ON. So we mapped a Midi map so that when you press it, it is OFF. So each time you are pressing the button you cancel out the Native mapping. Then we mapped the same button to load 3-4 combo effects, different paramaters, and effects on/off. So the button now only does what we want it to do.....but the rest of the controller still operates in Native NHL mode. Yul first demonstrated this in one his youtube vids, and then Bigbeatzz came up with some awesome ideas as you can see. It works pretty damn good, and you can do the cancel thing with quite a few buttons, but it gets tricky. |
Dj Tykarma 10.06.2011 | Hi, I have two questions : 1. If I use this mapping, does it mean that my S4 switches to MIDI globally or are just the mapped controls in MIDI mode while the other stay in native mode? 2. Any chances to see anything like that on an X1? Would love to see a great FX dedicated mapping with combos and stuff like that on the X1. Thanks. |
Carlee Roarke 10.06.2011 | Then I'm confused on the difference between regular mode and midi mode? If you can map deeply enough to do armyofme's drama sweep... What can you do with midi mode that you can't with regular? |
Karolis Petrauskas 10.06.2011 | This actually works in regular mode. If you want to map to midi mode you'l loose the function of the numbers in the loop area. If you are crafty, you can trick the s4 to do some cool stuff. Also the out of the box mapping is great if you are not into mapping. |
Carlee Roarke 10.06.2011 | Holy shit. This is EXACTLY what my solution was going to be for the S4... I had been considering buying one, but I feel like I'd have no use for the loop recorder whatsoever. I use this same one-button-per-effect kind of set up on my current mapping for my RMX, including armyofme's awesome drama knob. I was believeing of trying replicate this using the loop recorder section of the S4, but I was afraid it might not be possible because of some of the shit I've heard about the difficulty of mapping the S4... But if you guys have managed to make this work, I'm buying a S4. Out of curiosity, are there any functions of the s4 that don't work any more if you switch it over to midi mode? |
Forrest Kuepper 05.06.2011 | other question how do I bring back the default mapping? |
Karolis Petrauskas 04.06.2011 | The only issue you will have is that you'll have to press the buttons twice to load the presets on Effect Unit 2. The midifighter loads it's own effect presets which are embedding into the tsi mapping. I am using the instant gratification mapping on my maschine and I am really enjoying it. I must say though, after loading the instant gratification mapping I use the superknobs way less. |
Forrest Kuepper 03.06.2011 | I'm believeing about getting a midi fighter pro.... And I have the super knob tsi installed do you believe this custom tsi gonna affect the midi fighter? |
Julissa Serrone 18.05.2011 | ^ army. In the mapping I use I only use two banks and use the toggle modifier to turn it on/off using the button under D/W of chained effects mode. |
Joannie Brague 18.05.2011 | has anyone figured out how to be able to turn on super knob mode and turn it off. it's great. but I don't have access to any other effects because the unit 1/2 buttons are reserved for turn on the super knob effects |
Karolis Petrauskas 17.05.2011 | ^^ excellent ^^ |
Janella Schlappich 17.05.2011 | i customized the mapping keeping delay and aom woosh (i use the midifighter for the freeze), putting a flanger and a pulse (the knob with the flanger acts on the dry/wet, and on the pulse effect paramenter with the pulse, keeping a preset value of 0,6dry/wet) Those are the effect i use most often that i need off-midifighter. |
