|Build Log| - DIY midi gamepad controller
|Build Log| - DIY midi gamepad controller Posted on: 07.12.2010 by Jacqualine Arroyos hello all, (first of all, sorry for my bad english... i'm from portugal) i've started my controller project. will be based on: 2 gamepads 1 sound board 30 arcade buttons 2 sliders 8 knobs 1 line in 1 line out the box is an old plumber tool box that i've found in a Lisbon flea market since this project will have to be as low cost as possible, i've spend some time searching for the correct design (to prevent mistakes) and also good but not expensive components at this point i've encontered the first problem... keeping in mind that the only experience in electronics that i have is to turn on and off the power button of my pc... said that, please be patience, and please sorry for some of my stupid questions... so the problem are the LED... i've managed to connect the analog potentiometer to the PCB and to a LED, it works fine... but when i connect the button the LED light is not bright... here you can see what is appening what am i doing wrong? thanking you in advanced | |
Margo Gilb 21.12.2010 | No I also tried endless rotaries on my gamepad pcb... no way you need some sort of "translator" because it sends 1-O-1-O-1-O-1-O... |
Jacqualine Arroyos 20.12.2010 | really? |
Graham Frazier 20.12.2010 | Sorry no endless rotary(rotary encoder) with a gamepad. |
Jacqualine Arroyos 20.12.2010 | my fault... it seams that it's for audio use... i got it from a local buy yourself electronics store, this time i asked for help... lets see how it works... in adition to my project, i've also got a light sensor resistor, hope it works well... next thing in my mind is to get a a endless rotary... how could i connect it? |
Arcelia Siebeneck 20.12.2010 | that's why I was asking if it's linear... if it's a stereo fader then it might be log (for audio use only)... where did you get the fader from? |

Jacqualine Arroyos 21.12.2010 | i believe i figure it out.... those slides are stereo... |
Jacqualine Arroyos 17.12.2010 | hi archie, i've tested it with the joypad, and the analog switch is on, it works with a knob, but i didn't manage to make it work with the slide. also, this slide have 6 contacts, and i have no clue what is what... |
Shay Wyche 17.12.2010 | Have you connected the slider to the joypad or tested it with a meter. Sometimes the analogue switch on the joypad needs to be pressed before you can get any data out of it in your software. |
Jacqualine Arroyos 16.12.2010 | hi, i finally found a acrylic shop, i seams that all of the acrylic shops (6) i knew are now closed... but i finally found one open, the top will be ready next week :-D at this point i have all of the soldering of one pad ready and tested but i have a problem, i don't know how to connect the fades... i've tried all possible combinations and none worked... is it possible that its burned? do you have any idea how to connect it? thanks |
Jacqualine Arroyos 12.12.2010 | hi, there will be a acrilic top, with all of the componetes divided in acrilic boxes (some old acrilic photo archives that i have laying arround) i'm begining to believe that the ir sensor is probably too dificult to build... maybe if i find ir sensor kit that is just to solder and plug... i'm not planing to use this controller in clubs... i'm more in to experimental music and improvised performances |
Chau Honrado 11.12.2010 | looking forwards to seeing this all finished up! will look sweet in the wooden case, how are you planning to mount all the components internally? and as far as im aware youd just need another analogue input for the IR sensor? though, having seen people attempt similar in the past, can be fairly unstable in a club environment |
Jacqualine Arroyos 09.12.2010 | just woundering how dificult it will be to incorporate a infrared sensor on the box?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWQhY1StF7o |
Shay Wyche 09.12.2010 | Good stuff there. If I can help again I will, but I'm not an electronics expert, I just enjoy tearing things to bits. |

Random X 09.12.2010 | This is becoming more and more interesting per new post! |
Joan Kollmorgen 09.12.2010 | Whats the sound board you're using? |
Jacqualine Arroyos 09.12.2010 | yes and no.... hehehhe there are 8 knobs, 6 knobs for the gamepad and 2 to controll volume of headphones and line in, this knobs will be independent |
Joan Kollmorgen 09.12.2010 | In your picture it looks like you've got 8 pots and 2 faders to me? That would equal 10 analog hence 3 game pads? |
Jacqualine Arroyos 09.12.2010 | actually i will only need two gamepads. my gamepads have 18 buttons + 4 analogue each, so i will have 36 buttons + 8 analog. more than enought |
Joan Kollmorgen 09.12.2010 | I believe you're gonna need at least 3 game pads to make that design. Love the case by the way.. |
Jacqualine Arroyos 09.12.2010 | here is the layout... |
Wava Egizi 09.12.2010 | The retro style is kool! Good luck with all your gamepad soldering |
Marnie Pomeranz 09.12.2010 | the old box gives it a very retro feel so retro all most an antique feel lol love it |
Maryanne Weatherill 08.12.2010 | Love the old antique looking case dude even though personally i do prefer metal casing mainly because im an animal on gear:L |

Jacqualine Arroyos 08.12.2010 | I never imagined that the box would lead to this big debate... I've chosen the box precisely by the character, its history, I do not want a plastic thing without a soul ... and it will be very good looking when it's finished Archie, thanks for the sketch, I'll try to see if I can get it to work |
Franklin Momany 08.12.2010 | W/e, I'm over this. I'm just saying there is no need to bash a suggestion. I'm just trying to help, no harm intended. Hope your midi turns out nice. |

Kiyoko Wellisch 09.12.2010 | Oh wowzer. A plain old bit of moulded plastic, just like 95% of the other electronics I own. How can you not believe that box is cool? It has so much character! |

Kiyoko Wellisch 08.12.2010 | Dude! What are you on about? That old box is way cooler than any crappy bit of plastic. You need some style man :P |
Franklin Momany 07.12.2010 | I'd like to see what you can do with the supplies. Wouldn't you rather spend a couple bucks and get some better buttons etc? The box/suitcase looks rather worn, big and heavy. I mean you can find nice yet cheap plastic project boxes at radioshack. |
