The Vestax Spin DJ Controller!
Posted on: 17.11.2009 by Humberto Partis
Hi everyone!

So, this awesomeness midicontroller has landed to the earth, and some of you already know the name of it, Vestax Spin DJ Controller!

Anyways, I got some questions!

Some people on DJTT already got it, I saw some comments on the "news" thingy about the controller, and I was wondering, can someone make a review? Video reviews? Some samples?

And I got this question about the controller in general!

I'm heading to the states in about 38 days, i'm going to stay there for.. 5 weeks! And, already the Spin Controller has been sold out in apple store (shipping in 2-3 weeks)! AND the bad thingy is that - when i'm getting there, the christmas weekend has started and i'm guessing that it's going to be sold out kind of quick

ANYWHO, what do you believe about the problem i'll got there? Can I order it when im in the states, and be KNOWING that 2-3 weeks it's on my cousins doorstep? because, sometimes (so i heard) apple can ship stuff after, like.. 4-5 weeks when it says 2-3 weeks

I'll hope this thread can be like a "official" Vestax Spin DJ Controller!
Info about the controller, and news articles and so on!

Have a great day!

ps. if you got the controller, please make a review or youtubevideo or something when your using it! ds.

Here is the .tsi file my buddy helped me set up. Please be aware that I've mapped some buttons to other functions such as mic volume knob = cue/mix in headphones, shift key = playlist view. I believe I mapped the FX button as loop out. I should change that. If anyone can figure out how to get tempo bend to work with the jogs, please share. Thanks. Anyway, enjoy and big props to TeLLy(he's on DJTT too) for the help! Happy New Year!

Keeping my eyes on this one. Seems like a nice addition to my controller family.

xXDJBallaXx and I are gonna give it a shot, It seems the main problem is that the jogwheel will only work under skratch+pitch bend together and won't "scratch" while the song is playing either way we'll probably start a new thread tommorow and maybe start getting this thing to work with traktor

We'll need all the help we can get though lol

Kinda off topic, but if you really want a case made of steel, go to a local metal shop, you'd be surprised how cheaply/easily a case can be made. A friend is of mine is a very skilled welder and metal worker, I'd refer you to him but we are on the opposite coast. PM me if you really want a case made and i'll talk to my buddy (to see if he's willing to do it).

I imported the Traktor tsi for the Vestax Spin and everything seems to work except I can't cue with my headphones. It must be something in the audio "preferences" Output but I can't figure out what the correct setting should be. The headphone LED's work but no sound comes out of the headphone. The only time I hear sound from the headphone is when I slide the deck slider up for volume. Obviously, I need the headphone (preview) to work separately from the on air sound. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a newb just bought this thing toevening for a new years party were gonna have, thought it'd be fun to try it out but...djay honestly is ok but its REALLY limited Thanks for that setup it makes it easier but its still kind of buggy Is the map still wip?

*edit* Ok, so I'm trying to give it a shot myself, the main issue that bothers me the most is that the platters are set to scratch+pitch control...Well it only does Pitch control while the song is playing and scratch when its no am I missing something??? I tryed to set it as scratch only with all the same settings but it doesn't scratch at all?

2: I don't know if you noticed that the "LOW" Eq slider is set to "Filter" instead?

3: Since the Mic FX and Mic Pitch can't be used can they be used as the effects knobs or something? Just to put use on all the extra things that aren't functional.

4: I can't hear my mic when I hit the "mic cue" button or whatever that is

I do like that the arrows work great! I know your not the creator and I'm not trying to bother you with requesting any of this stuff so I'll quit being a newb

But if you can help or if you have an updated Map can you PM me sometime?

Thanks!

It worked for me...? Just hit Import on the bottom corner of the Preferences screen once you choose the file you want it should pop up. The first time I tried it didn't work because I imported it directly from the list. Hope it helps

You wouldn't happen to live in the upper California area, If so I would be down give it an all-out Traktor map for PC, just need to meet someone with one to do it at a coffee shop or something, I don't personally own a spin. (PC/Spin owners near Sacramento hit me up, we'll post it here when completed)

Those Jog Wheels look like damn Disc Rotors! ; )

They seem like a VERY basic design! Something you would buy if you walked into a music shop and said I want to start Digital Djing!

Aint got nothing on the VCI-100SE!

After knowing the news I got to check with the www and found a couple of videos that would help someone. I liked the product when I looked for a demo at Apple stores.

I just picked up this device and started mapping it for Traktor andI have noticed too the issue with the device not responding. At the time I was setting up the LED's so it could well be the issue with the looping. Does anyone have a fix for this or any more info. I will do some more testing and see what i can find out.

You should post the mapping for others. Because the exclusivity to Djay was a dealbreaker for me since I don't have any clue how to map these things.

Sounds good, but the thingy is I would love to use traktor with it, but it seems to be a such of a problem! I'll have to wait and see what I would do. I love the interface on the controller, hmm.

Got any videos that you would like to post? =)

Hey guys.

I have been reading in diffrent community s about the controller, and I believe, or might buy it, don't know yet, there is so much negativity about the controller that makes me unsure! bugging, cheap stuff, "exclusive for djay" and so on, got me believeing that i might want to get hercules RMX! But it's so ugly

Still, vestax has the best rep at the moment.. anyways, it's a hard decision..

What should i do?! I just want to lern myself to be a better dj, more music knowledge and so on.. :/
It's hard to decice to what to get, well i have been hearing good stuff about the RMX but but.. darn..

Well, I would say that the spin is lovley for some parts, but sucks in other, what i've been reading on other community s.. but, yeah - damn it's so hard.

nvm, sleep-mode

In case no one's buying yours yet, MrLucky65, you've got a PM.

I heard that the local Apple Store in Boston still have them in stock, but that's just too much of a drive for me. So if anyone's near Boston, take your chance.

My roommate is interested in the Spin...I guess having a pair of 1200s in a room will do that to you

He's believeing of buying one in about a month. I'll get to play with it then :3 I miss my VCI-100, but was impressed and am curious as to how the Spin stacks up.

i have a spin for sale if you are interested. I will ship anywhere if you pay for the shipping. I'll sell it for 240 even, knock off ten bucks since i have had it for a couple weeks.

Sorry bruv, im living out here and i only just got one of the last, there are none available until at least march next year, they sold like hot cakes!!!!

Hmm... the Spin ceases to be affordable for a PC beginner if you have to buy an expensive external sound card as well. Is there basically zero chance of a custom driver (like a hacked up version of the VCI-300 driver) that will make it work?

Still, I would love to use it as a control surface.

*EDIT*
Am I just being dim, does ASIO4ALL solve the problem of not being able to use the internal soundcard with Traktor to monitor? Would the output to headphones be mono? I sometimes have to mix in my headphones if I'm practising late at evening .

Also is the loopback issue going to mean the controller won't be lit up at all if I use it on PC?

I believe this is a pretty clear answer regarding the PC side:

plus no headphone vol knob on the dj/io...i had one too, sold it and bought a used firebox for a little more, now that is a soundcard!

i would also like to know what is happening on the PC side of using this controller

I used to own a DJio and had nothing but problems using it with Ableton (output crashing, audio becoming delayed by over a second, etc), and the drivers were rarely if ever updated...

Avoid if at all possible!

Any update on the PC use of it (like driver for sound). I mean if it's good enough as a controller, I can also buy a separate soundcard, but I need something to start with for a while.

If things are going fine, the update can be a VCI-300 so...

Yea that ways a lot cleaner (they don't have to use plastic, just the electricity you'd be using on DJTT's server anyways haha) *just make sure you write down the serial number they give you or email it to your self so (forbid it happen but) if yr pc dies, you've got it backed up!
