Building the impossible DJ deckstand
Building the impossible DJ deckstand Posted on: 04.12.2011 by Keli Muennink Well some of you may remember i started this thread in djf but thought id start again on here seems as its all gone now.i want to build this: [IMG][/IMG] I have never made anything like this before and have little woodworking skills but im up for a challenge. will update with pictures of my progress shortly. | |
Kristofer Krauel 24.02.2012 | Any more pics? |
Keli Muennink 23.02.2012 | Everything sanded, slot cut out at the bottom for all wiring, just gota make a few phone calls and get it sprayed in the next few days. really looking forward to having my first mix with this baby |
Rick Bossett 10.02.2012 | just read the whole thread so far... really want to see the finished product. looking really good! |
Keli Muennink 08.02.2012 | Nice, im still undecided on what to do. i need to get out there and get it sanded whatever i decide, its just too cold at the moment. i hate leaving a project when im so close to finishing it |
Frankie Helter 26.01.2012 | Looking great there Steeevo! my mate made one of these a few years ago for his setup near exactly like yours, he spents ages sanding and smoothing it down, got it sprayed professionally piano gloss black, looked amazing. but after a while small cracks began to show and chips (from too many parties). he Moved house then threw it away! i would go with wood vaneer mate. |
Keli Muennink 24.01.2012 | really believeing about a wood veneer finish now, instead of painting it in a high gloss finish. |
Ozie Harrall 24.01.2012 | This is a seriously cool project |
Melinda Wubben 24.01.2012 | Looks great! Add dark wood veneer, and it's ready for lounge prime time. |
Janyce Henningson 21.01.2012 | Looking real nice mate |
Clemmie Peton 21.01.2012 |

Yong Aptekar 21.01.2012 | Why not laminate it? Pick up some veneers and glue them on. It saves you sanding, you can get many different types of wood, and personally, I believe dark stained wood looks better than dark painted. Veneer should be able to wrap those curved corners very well. |
Keli Muennink 22.01.2012 | Ok. But when I sand it down ill be removing the smooth surface of the board and will be left with a fluffy mess which I got to paint? |
Nella Libin 22.01.2012 | You can, but dust mask up, the dust can be carcinogenic |
Keli Muennink 22.01.2012 | A few good ideas there, not too sure im keen on cutting out holes in the legs and putting in lights, wanna keep it really simple. havnt worked much on this over the holidays but im back at work now and will maybe get it sanded, filled and painted within the next few weeks. any one no if you can sand the top surface of mdf. because where the legs meet the top there is an overhang and i need to sand it flush???? |
Yanira Eckroat 25.12.2011 | there is defiantly an easier way to do the sides did you know that you can actually bend MDF really easily it could have saved you alot of weight... how are you planning on finishing it. Since its mdf if i were you, i would fill any seams and holes with a mdf wood filler and then get it automotive sprayed a cool colour and then high gloss clear coat... another thing you could have considered that is still an option is lower the center area a bit and drop in a sheet of plexiglass with cutouts for your mixers that way you dont damage the top areas where its just wood. theres a million things you could do with this set up... If you want to get really fancy buy some muli-color led strips. cut 2 large rectangular holes in the sides of the legs. line the cut out holes with the led strips and wire them to a power plug. then make a lip on the inside of the rectangular cut outs and get 2 pieces of frosted acrylic. clear silicone the lip and insert the acrylic ... now your legs of the bench glow what ever colour you want and if you hook it up to an audio source it can pulse colours to the beat. if you need a pic of my idea let me know |
Valeri Holderness 22.12.2011 | looks like you've got most of it done its looking great man!! |
Dana Ordinario 22.12.2011 | Thanks for making this post it will give me a great reference point when making my own production/dj desk in the spring. I will make my own post and provide detailed pictures for everyone once the building phase begins. |
Rikki Angello 22.12.2011 | So fresh and so clean, clean |
Romelia Stankard 22.12.2011 | looking good man |
Keli Muennink 22.12.2011 | The Project has been slowing down due to the run up of christmas. but this is where i am at now. having glued the legs to the top and bolted it with m12 coach screws, i believe this should hold it!!!!! |
Keli Muennink 13.12.2011 | More photos i have found |
Keli Muennink 13.12.2011 | Errrr well i have used 1 x sheet 4ft x8ft 1" mdf @ |
Rolande Posso 13.12.2011 | Nice how much do you reckon its costing you to build ? |
Keli Muennink 13.12.2011 | Don't believe I would want to make loads of these, it takes a long time to make cos I like to get things right. I have not used any nails, everything has been biscuit joined and glued. I didn't want to use nails/screws because then I would have had to fill the holes. |
Sulema Eshel 13.12.2011 | Nice.. very nice. I see a lot of clamps... is it glued only (or are there nails)? Great bit of work... love to see projects go from idea to completion. Thx |
Kristofer Krauel 13.12.2011 | Looking really sweet steeevo!! Maybe when you've finished this you could go into business making these for other community members!! I only need to fit an s4 in mine so not too much cutting out!! |
Keli Muennink 13.12.2011 | This is what its going to look like when i fix the legs to the top |
Kattie Weldin 12.12.2011 | You could make two small slits in the top that can accept a DJ stand, I know an Odyssey stand would work if modified but honestly they're pretty horrible stands. Maybe mod a Crane or Uberstand if you have the $. |
Keli Muennink 12.12.2011 | Just checking to make sure my measurements where correct and the turntables fit. |
Nella Libin 12.12.2011 | Seriously. Seriously. Jealous! |
Keli Muennink 12.12.2011 | Updated Pictures glued and clamped side pieces on cut holes for easy access to turntables and mixer from the bottom cut a slot in the top side piece for the knobs of the xone |

Sweet job on the deckdesk(c). I was believeing 19" rackmount for the mixerfixer(c), as the maximum width of any mixer is 19"... just use blanking thingies for other size mixers. |
Keli Muennink 09.12.2011 | I have just had a thought, because i am going to be using torq i need somewhere to mount the connectiv and laptop so i can change the input from vinyl to mp3's. ideas please??? |
Nella Libin 09.12.2011 | Cracking work so far, i cant wait to see this project commpleted |
Keli Muennink 09.12.2011 | Anyways back to the project in hand, having both legs made, pva glued and sanded. i start on building the top. some more photos of the tulip wood being glued and biscuit jointed to the 1" MDF top. also routed out a hole to run the cables of the decks and mixer through. And if it all lines up they should run down the leg. i also need to cut a slot in the bottom of one leg so the cables can come out. |
Keli Muennink 08.12.2011 | I believe downhill mountain biking is mental, you have to wear body armour haha. we left trafalgar square at 8am on a saturday morn so it wernt to busy, i wouldnt advise cycling through the city centre tho |
Nella Libin 08.12.2011 | An aside, how come DJ's are in to mental, crazy, adrenaline fuelled life threatening sports.. I mean what i do on that could be seen as crazy, but even i ain't mad enough to cycle through London at Rush hour |
Nella Libin 08.12.2011 | Yup, me on the downhill rig, Orange Patriot +7 freeride... Its a skills compensator really, if your brave enough to just let it do its thing it will find its own way down a mountain.. Here it is without an ugly git sitting astride it.. |
Keli Muennink 08.12.2011 | Haha, is that you? only bought it cos i was cycling from london to barca for charity in july. havnt rode it since. |
