What's your opinion on SKRILLEX?

I seriously do not understand why he gets so much hate. His production is so fkn tight and he's living the life. Only slight problem I can see anyone may believe is he doesn't do much life, but in my opinion he doesn't need to if his songs are already bangin. He's made dubstep mainstream and it seems to me all the haters are underground kids who take pride in saying "I listened to dubstep before it was cool".
Would love to see everyone's opinion and quote me out if you agree/disagree with anything but say why

This question came up cause I'm doing a musicology report for Year 12 HSC and I chose Skrillex ...found alot of mixed opinions on the internet haha

I like some of his tracks, but as with much eletro house inspired "dubstep" (brostep, whatever you want to call it), it pretty much sounds the same. I feel like I've heard all of what Skrillex has to offer after hearing Syndicate, Ruffneck Bass, Nice Sprits and Monster and Cinema Remix. Hopefully future will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

What I don't understand is why this discussion keeps popping up. These threads are so long and tiring to read. Start threads with upcoming artists instead. I don't care what the general public believes of Skrillex. I'm not DJing to just play Top 40, I'm DJing because I love to find new and great music. Skrillex was new and great when he first came out - now he's pretty just a brand for "brostep".

Yeah I have double standards (?) posting in this thread, but come on. This discussion is getting old and we're getting nowhere. Still these threads are some of the most active.

I just don't listen to dubstep, and when i hear it somewhere i even don't care who is the artist e.t.c.

Thats why i don't care about skrillex

I listen to Skrillex on my personal time. I've never played his stuff at a party. I'd probably have people staring at me. His stuff is out there, and it's either love it or hate it, from what I've seen.

-Promises
-Scary Sprites or whatever it's called

love those two

I saw him at Rockcity in Nottingham on Wednesday evening , totally blew the fooking roof off!!! I dont believe his work is the most technical or artistic in the world by far but it still rocks bodies on the dance floor and at the end of the day isnt that why we do it!! If people enjoy our music then great for them. If you dont like it dont go to his gigs!

I believe by making dubstep commercial like this it'll lead new ears that may not of heard these sounds to the more underground music and increase that fan base.

My one gripe... he didnt even have a pair of cans! His set was blatantly pre recorded and he knob twiddled the whole thing (very good knob twiddling!). Would of at least liked to see him pretend to mix!! haha

Couldn't have put it any better. Some people see the creativity, passion and intelligence that goes into a production, some people don't. I'm in the latter category when it comes to Skrillex.

I'm not fully clear on what your report is about? Do people like Skrillex? Why do people like/dislike Skrillex?

I personally really enjoyed Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites the first time I heard it, but I feel that he pretty much laid all his cards out with that one tune. I havn't heard anything since that was radically different, or evolved. I'm really trying hard not to say "It all sounds the same".

I also don't feel much of a connection to the typical crowd that are into his stuff, perhaps I would of when I was 17-18.

And finally, let's be honest, he looks like a complete 'tard.

Now i don't really go out on weekends and just hit up the local house evening s and Konkrete Jungle which are during the week. On weekends everything is pretty much dubstep.

I'll probably just wait for this whole craze to die down a bit, and hopefully it will go back to every genre being represented and people actually getting down instead of just beating the shit out of each other...or until i realize i'm probably just getting old...heh

If everyones faces are melting, then its time to drop some psytrance or a very acid techno, something so much "in your face" that dont allows them to have any reaction, just dance.

I hope all the people that has got in to EDM because of the new dubstep wave remains and start listening to other genres. Its nice to have a new influx of people in to the scene.

Also, I dont like the whole trend of "live acts" boring as hell.

Fair enough, Ok so towards the end of last year/early this year I was enjoying some of his toons, have a few in my collection, and was using a few in mixes I was jamming. enjoyed showing a few mates his music and they all liked him.

he played over her (Australia) earlier this year about may from memory on a tour with Deadmau5. Was looking forward to seeing what he bought to the table live.

Well I would have to say that I personally didn't enjoy myself during his set. Reason being is that I am a fan of a broad style of music and love to let loose and dance the day/evening away. I just couldn't get into that particular style of his live so left halfway through his set.

Would I go see him again - NO
Do I like his sound - some of it yes
Do I like him - I have never met him so reserve comment.

thats about all I got other than I wish him all the best as he is doing well for himself so good for him.

haters gona hate, Im no hater so meh,

I believe no, as everyone simply wants to listen to whatever makes them happy. In this regard, I give Sonny credit for taking a genre and exposing millions of people to it, giving them the pleasure of listening to his music.

That said, I dont like dupstep (or Skrillex's music, though some of it is catchy) however kudos to him for making it. I heard once that he tries to bring the atmosphere of a metal concert to EDM, and I certainly believe that he's succeed in doing so.

Just dont ask me to play it

We have had 10s of threads on this exact subject so...
