What's your opinion on SKRILLEX? Posted on: 03.12.2011 by Oliva Propps I seriously do not understand why he gets so much hate. His production is so fkn tight and he's living the life. Only slight problem I can see anyone may believe is he doesn't do much life, but in my opinion he doesn't need to if his songs are already bangin. He's made dubstep mainstream and it seems to me all the haters are underground kids who take pride in saying "I listened to dubstep before it was cool".Would love to see everyone's opinion and quote me out if you agree/disagree with anything but say why This question came up cause I'm doing a musicology report for Year 12 HSC and I chose Skrillex ...found alot of mixed opinions on the internet haha Cheers | |

Sasha Minieri 05.12.2011 | If you don't like him, yeah cool, move on, do not care. But seriously the amount of guys that reckon they're from the 'underground' and say "Skrillex is too mainstream now so he is shit" is a freakin' joke. Do you feel somewhat rebelious by not listening to what a majority of people listen to? Because if that's the case, that really touches my heart :3 It's like those wank indie guys they dress in a certain way, because they wanna stand out and look different to everyone else, but with the amount of them now, they all look the same. Skrillex has awesome production skill, and there is no slight doubt about that, and he is well respected by other professionals. So good luck to all of you believeing you are top notch shit by taking out on someone with such great success and skill, and a huge career forming before their eyes. (Y) Jealousy makes me laugh these days. |
Kesha Orde 05.12.2011 | But I cant remember anyone in this thread 'hating' for no reason. Lots of people have said completely valid negative things about his music or production and you've jumped down their throat or dismissed their opinions. Myself included. Just accept that not everyone likes or appreciates the same things, and thats okay. I absolutely love Venetian Snares' music, but I wouldn't dream of lecturing my mum on why she should appreciate his immense editing and choppage skills. Because that's just stupid. |

Adelia Tiemersma 04.12.2011 | I decided not to take the time to read ALL the responses to this thread (after page 2 it seemed kinda repetitive) but as a dubstep promoter, artist, mc & dj, I'd like to put in my 2 cents. Skrillex tunes have top notch production value & as many have stated, I USED to play his tunes. As a Grime head, "Scatta" is one of my faves, & Sonny is a beast with FM8. I know plenty of his personal friends & not one of them has a bad thing to say about the guy. It's a bit sad actually that this drama has come up around him. The problem with Skrillex's tunes is they've become so overplayed & his style so over-copied that frankly, if a tune doesn't sound like Skrillex, the less-educated in the crowd will become bored & sometimes feel the need to tell everyone quite loudly during breakdowns that they want to hear "real dub" if that isn't just the most laughable statement. This happened to me once while dropping a Lee Scratch Perry tune as a palate cleanser at the end of a set & another in the midst of a mix between Skream & Matty G tunes. The disparity between fanbases is extremely evident as well, you'll get a crowd at a show say headlined by a Skrillex or Bare that you won't get at a show headlined by a Chase & Status or Antiserum. Here in Las Vegas as a result of the split in demographics, a lot of the heads that have more history with electronic music are asking for a different sound, be it Drum & Bass or Dubby or Purple or Glitch or more Minimal OG Dubstep stuff while the newer heads just want harder & more evil, more Metal samples, more hard Electro sounds etc. We actively try to cater to all lovers of bass music at my own event but it's starting to become like the east coast vs. west coast battle of electronic music with people getting violently offended if you speak negatively about their favorite artist or leaving the party if a DJ who doesn't play enough face melters/subby rollers goes on. It can sometimes be hard to remember that the point of this is all about having fun & entertaining people. I know I'm in it for life & for me at least, it looks like Dubstep (& bass music in general) could pay at least some of my bills very soon, and when the sound evolves into something else, me & the rest of us dedicated to our craft will still be up there playing something with some low end & the tourists will have moved on so I try not to get to worked up about it. |
Belen Wermes 04.12.2011 | this thread is foolish |
Londa Paxtor 04.12.2011 | a part of you paper could be, that if you ask peoples opinions about Skrillex, you get a wide range of rather intense responses. Love to Hate, Respect to Indifference. Some see him as a trail blazer, while others question that validity with comparisons to the origins of his electronic music style. |

I hated it when Def Leppard did it (and once gave up smoking cannabis because it almost made me like Def Leppard), and see no reason to change my opinion of radio-clean heavy metal now. Maybe if Skrillex cut off one of his arms? |
Yong Aptekar 04.12.2011 | Yes, but it is HIS version of radio-clean metal. It would be no different if you came up with a style and went out to play. There's going to be people that don't like it. Just because you don't like the music, that's not a valid reason to dismiss an artist. Now, if we are talking rebecca black, where EVERYONE agrees on how good she isn't, then that's a valid reason to dismiss her. But Skrillex has become so popular so fast for a reason. |
