Drugs and Music. Is it everywhere?

Drugs and Music. Is it everywhere?

Hi people,

First I hope this discussion doesn't break the rules but I really want to ask a wide audience this.

Now I want to put this straight out there as I am going to come off a little biased as it is. I have never tried any drugs other than marijuana and that was once. It wasn't for me as I'm naturally a bubbly and fun person and it just made me bored and lazy. So other than that I have never tried a cigarette or anything else. My reason being is I don't like not being in complete control. I also don't drink enough to get drunk because of this. It's not like I have ever had a bad experience but it's just not me.

However I don't judge people that do any of these things. It's your life and you live it how you want so long as you are aware of any consequences that come with it and it doesn't effect me in anyway. I have friends that do MDMA and they know that if they are having a evening out with me then I don't want them doing it as that's not the person I want them to be when I am out wanting to have a good time with them.

Now to the point...

A year ago I started a music course at a music specific establishment. I love it and I'm hoping to stay on another 2 years to do ta Fda in Music & Sound Technology. When I first started it was quite a mixed group of people from different backgrounds and ages. They all smoked and while the older ones joked about the drugs they did when they were younger there was no talk of taking any now.

I'm in my second year now and switched groups to better suit me for travel reasons. There are 16 people in the group and the average age is probably about 19. The youngest being 17. They all smoke. I am the only one that doesn't. So it's a bit gutting that everyone goes for a smoke break and I kind of don't fit in with that social aspect of chatting away. That's my problem though.

But when I do chat they are all talking about ketamine, MDMA, Acid. I could go on but I don't actually know the names or have a clue when it comes to drugs so I won't embarrass myself. Some of them are DJs or just clubbers. I get that some people would do it but it seems like the whole class. Is it becoming more of a normal thing now? Has it always? I'm only 23 and I'm not a party animal so it might be something that has been oblivious to me.

I'm not asking for you to say you partake in them but more your views on the scene and drugs. I would just like a little insight into it.

tl;dr: Lots of people do drugs in the music scene. What's your take on it?

This. You often find increased alcohol and drug use in circles of creative people.

I believe allot of it depends on the evening s you go to. My friends will go to certain evening s are always take drugs, and then other evening s will just drink with no drugs. No one wants to be on speed at a top 40 student evening .

People do drugs and people listen to music.
I'm sure you do drugs (caffeine, alcohol, OTC stuff to relieve symptoms, etc).
The only reason this is a topic of discussion is because the drugs are illegal, and many of the ones you referred to are psychoactive which tends to freak people out.
As long as people are safe and do things in moderation it's ok.
However, I will take one drug as an example. We don't completely understand all of the effects of MDMA on the body at this point, but we are pretty sure it degrades dopamine receptors. That reason coupled with buying MDMA off the street and not knowing the purity and if it is cut with something else that might be horrible for you, makes it unappealing to me.

Stay safe out there.

Some people like to experiment with how the mind perceives things...just so happens that lots of musicians/artists fall in that boat.

I believe if your scared to let go of control it will inhibit your creativity.

That said, I have a few friends who have never even smoked marijuana, and I respect that decision. Drugs effect everyone a little differently, some people just can't handle or don't like what it does to them.

By the way, different marijuana types will effect you in many different ways. Some will make you tires, some will actually pick you up, some give more of a body high, etc.

Also, I stopped smoking many years ago, but I have no regrets, and had many fun experiences along the way. Would do it the same, if I did it again.

I'm not sure that open discussion of this topic breaks the rules. What i would caution is this subject invariably reverts to the "legalise drugs" argument that always always always gets p*ssy.

So, here it is. Just like the Skrillex threads. As soon as this gets p*ssy it gets shut.

Yeah they are everywhere especially when it comes to music but that doesn't mean it's the rule. As far as smoking cigarettes goes if the smoke doesn't bother you there's no reason you can't go outside and talk with them on their smoke breaks. I quit smoking and all my friends smoke and I always join them on their smoke breaks to talk.

It may seem like everyone does drugs in the music/club scene but they really don't and it's usually the circle you're with giving that perception and because there can be quite a lot of people on them it seems like there are a lot more than there really are. When I was doing that I just assumed it was everyone since that's who I surrounded myself with and it varies greatly from venue to venue.

I don't drink or use anything anymore and have no problem going out to clubs or to festivals, you get used to it and start to appreciate being able to go home and wake up refreshed the next day.

In the UK it's against the law to smoke in a public place which has more than 3 sides and a roof but it's also a educational college so yeah they have to go outside. Lecturers as well.

I want to make it clear though I have never been pushed into doing drugs. EVERYONE tells me to smoke weed but only because they swear by it. Can't help but notice these people are normally the stressed kind though (before smoking).

Oh I do sometimes. Although as a non smoker being around smoke is a bit off putting. But again I go out and get some fresh air and give my ears a rest.

Any decent drug-using music lover will be completely accepting of people who aren't interested. My friend's cat's hairdresser's botanist told me so.
I wouldn't say I go out my way to avoid people that do. But when someone's smashed off their face and I'm sober and having fun. Well I don't believe the 2 go together. They aren't making sense to me and to them I'm being a downer.

You can't deny the fact that MDMA is huge in the club scene.
The site might not want to have anything to do with the subject and it's their site so their rules. If it should get locked/deleted I would like a PM just saying why though.

being a muslim i don't drink or what not. it was kind of awkward getting into the club scene initially but now i gig fairly regularly and don't really have a problem being surrounded by it.

go out with them when their smoking and still chat it up, just because your not smoking doesn't mean you can't kick it with them.

being social is a big part of getting gigs, don't let something like this get in the way of that
