Yeah you can toggle ADV|Chained via midi. IME, there are some considerations unique to controllers and how each handles midi I/O. For example my Korg nano control handles multiple midi funtions simultaneously pretty well where my APC40 sometimes needs a "double-punch" to get all the commands working the way I program them. Of course, there may be something going on in the program that causes this but these kind of issues are going to surface more as the user base becomes more savvy.

how my I ask?

I thought a lot about this, I didn't own a 1d, but I believe a X1 is way better and even cheaper. 1d has nice faders and lot of push knobs, but only 4 buttons with led and the other buttons are veeery tiny. And you have to work with lot of modifires if you want to work with 4 decks on 2 units.

First off thanks to slangemenneske for the great little review.
i have put the word "Tanky"in my dictionary for future use.

I was believeing of running the X1 with the Midifighter for EFX and Beat Juggles.
looking at Eans TSI some of the EFX are chained and some in advance mode.
first question can you change FX banks from chained to advanced over midi?

The way things are going with the TSI evolution, is smart knobs/buttons I.E echo button loads up the echo, sets the time and engages the effect all at once.
great for the Midifighter because of it's lack of pots.

i was believeing of doing the same type of thing with the X1. pressing an effect button on the X1 reverts the effects back to Chained mode and you can play around that way.

hit Deck select on the Midifighter and it selects the deck loads up all the FX required for the mapping and off you go into you beat juggling routine.

i love Eans Midifighter TSI as it has had allot of thought put into it. however the X1 seems a bit standard. one button does one thing unless the shift key is held down.

any thoughts ?

So - I finally received my pair of X1 + assorted cases, plugged them in and played for a few hours.
The cases first.
Big rubber feet on the bottom. These things don't move and they fit the X1 very tightly. There is an internal hard plastic layer on all the sides and a little padding on the sides + bottom. Not much on the top and with the X1 inside, there's hardly any room below the top flap - but no padding, so careful with what you put on top.
On the inside of the top flap is a mesh pocket you can use to hold a few business cards, maybe some cardboard beer mats. These top parts are just removed by pulling them out of the zipper, super simple.

Now, to the actual units. I had a Xone 1D for a month or two last year, so I'll be comparing them often.
Each unit comes with a spare plastic overlay sheet : the front looks like it's built for Serato. There is no logo, but the black/red scheme and "sampler" controls for the top part made it quite obvious. The flip side is a blank overlay.

The usb cable has a ferrite near one end.

The build quality is, as others have mentioned, very nice. Everything is well aligned. The unit does not feel as much like a tank as the 1D, but I felt the 1D was too "tanky", if that's even a word.

Everything feels silky smooth to the touch : the metal plate on the top, the pots, the buttons.
The faders and rotaries have an outer rubber layer which is softer than standard Allen & Heath pots.
Pot rotation is quite tight, but not as hard as some of the pots on my former Xone 1D (some of the caps were pushed in too far on it). The center detent is precise, not too strong, not too weak and lighter than on a 1D - same for the click in the rotaries.
I should mention 1 click on the rotary = 1 action in traktor which wasn't nearly as obvious with the rotaries on my 1D (turning back and forth, I'd miss some midi events).
No pot wobble whatsoever.

The buttons have a short travel - longer than MPD buttons - with a light click : there is no wondering when you are triggering something. I find this is an improvement over all the buttons on the 1D, which have a longer travel and do trigger halfway through without much haptic feedback.
I should mention though : I like my buttons clicky on anything, and I didn't particularly rate the pads on a friend's dual MPDs in traktor.
Being able to check the status of most things with the leds is invaluable.

Plug and play action was pretty much there. After the light show, I had to wait a few seconds for windows to detect and install the driver which was available on my system due to a fresh migration from T3 to traktor pro 1.2.4.
Traktor detected the unit and asked if I wanted to override the effect presets, which I accepted and I found myself with 2 fx units in advanced mode.

shift + FX button 1/2/3/4 on each side did not change the effects as I expected. switching to four FX units in chained mode however made these button combos cycle through all the effects in each chained slot.

I then plugged in the second X1 for my other decks and noticed the fx slot buttons for both decks didn't enable fx1/2 for decks C/D. I gave up on effects then (as I was loading tracks and looping them all over place to get familiar with the really core controls first).
Again, as pointed out by others, not having the view reset to your decks when loading a track gets old, even though by default you can shift + click rotary to switch between decks and full browser view.

And then I looked at the time Next time, I'll edit the mapping to sort out the above issues and it should be smooth sailing from there.

I sold a 2D to buy the X1. Seeing as I have an Audio 8 DJ too i didnt need 2 sound cards.

The build quality of the Xones is incredible and they sit nicely next to dj mixers. I like the look of the X1 but I believe the 1D feels a bit more expensively built. The push buttons on the 1D feel nicer to me, they have a funny click feel on the X1. And I miss the Faders of the Xone.

But the fact that the X1 is layed out and developed especially for Traktor should make it more useable and inspiring out of the box for most traktor users. Plus its good that its illuminated, i find that really helps

Overall i believe its personal preference. I'll know more once I get my X1 to work!

I feel bad even making such a fuss when everyone's so excited about getting theirs (I was, anyway!) Am gonna uninstall every trace now, try one more time to reinstall STEP BY STEP with the manual and if it doesnt work I'll cycle to the shop tomorrow to try and exchange it.

And yes i agree, i'm not a hater and have so far loved NI products (i just particularly love allen & heath as i love the analogueness of the xone 62) - i just want to get the x1 working really

if its fucked, its just plain bad luck. every electrical company has some units with faults, thats why some people love different companies and some hate others.

it might, and i say might, just be a bad unit.

And I was SO excited about the X1 arriving, and sold my Xone 2d to buy it (which worked flawlessly and instantly on both the PC and Mac)

Big Allen & HEath fan, they've never let me down.

yep lightshow ever time, and yes it shows up on my PC in traktor at the bottom of the preferences menu but not on the Mac. I installed the tsi for it on both systems and i have the latest traktor versions on them. No responses at all from the x1

I even tried it with the traktor demo tht comes with the X1

Do they make the lightshow everytime you plug them in ?
Marceline Renteria

in traktor, have you accepted it to load the tsi for it at all?

can you see the device in the control editor?

Thanks guys. have tried pressing shift + hotcue now with no changes.

I also tried it on both of the USB ports of my macbook (aluminium, osx)

It did show up as a usb device on my Windows laptop and the lights on the controller lit up in a whooshy up and down the controller sequence for 5 seconds, then nothing, again.

Sorry to ask such dumb questions - i am starting to wonder if the unit is faulty

Or maybe try a different usb port. (sounds dumb, but people have had those similar issues with other controllers)

Am I missing something? i ran the kontrol x1 installer/driver of the installer cd and didn't plug it into usb (straight into laptop, no hub) until after the install

I'm gutted, i really want to use this thing! First impression = frustrating!
Just a guess but did you put it in MIDI mode by pressing SHIFT+HOTCUE?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly guys.

I'm having the same problem on my XP laptop unfortunately so maybe its the Unit?

It does light up when plugged in, and was recognised as a USB device on my laptop. Very strange

It depends if you run it in Traktor or not. Just read the manual or quick starters guide

but apart from that little gripe, its fantastic. the knobs are smooth, the lights are really bright, the loop functionality is great. i might try and re-map a little of it but i wanted it the way it was straight from the box.

excellent piece of kit N.I

Man is this thing nice. Knobs have a great tactile feel. Browsing and loading tracks is a breeze - one knob, turn and click. Same for setting loop size/enable/disable.

The NI Controller Editor really makes this shine. I have begun working on a template for Renoise. For those who are familiar, I have Pattern Sequencing selection and scheduling mapped to one knob (again, turn and click); also have track selection/mute/unmute/ and sequence loop enable/disable mapped . Just the beginning - my head is spinning trying to believe of more cool mappings.

Thanks NI! The KX1 is a beast.

Damn, now I need to figure out what to do with my SCS.3Ds. Should be able to remap it to do some non-standard things since the KX1 has pretty much everything covered as far as track navigation, loops, FX, and hot cues. Actually, the 3Ds are more natural for cue point juggling IMO - more real estate to work with plus multi-touch.
