NI kontrol M1 (member mockup)
Posted on: 10.01.2011 by Demetra Pinizzotto
Idea I had:
2 channel mixer controller module.
same size as the X1, same knobs and colours.
I did a little photoshop and came up with this.
comments, ideas and bumps are welcome.
I will update the picture when a good idea comes in and I find some time.
in the picture there are some labels on the buttons, in the real version I'd rather not have that. just to show you guys what is what.

looking at the comments since I posted my design, no one has anything to add? great
off to NI then

Thats the touchpad I want to use on my touchpad/arcade-button/knob design.

Kontrol FX2 hasn't been changed since earlier post

Kontrol M2 mixer unit

Kontrol X2. X1 edit, no FX controls, more focused on tempo, loops, and transport

thats it for know,
try to figure out what mapping I've got in mind, I did not add any labels.
comments, likes, dislikes, features to add etc? please tell!

update: I'm working on the kontrol 2 series
I will post the complete collection as soon as I've finished it.

Im woking on the X2 now. will be deck controls, so pitchbend, pitch fader, trasport browsing, loops etc. anyone want to add something?

anyone got any ideas on how to incorporate touchpads in a kontrol T2? kaoss style maybe?
Any type of Touch pad is gonna raise the price if its more than xy

I would like to see an FX specific jogwheel that would allow DJTT style fx mapping. Like in all honesty right now, I use my DN SC2000 as a fx conntroller

I haven't the money to throw a line for a bulk order. But if I had, oh I would go crazy

I believe you could map those fader to pan/EQ in traktor too. tho only in 2 decks, not the master.
You could map the faders to two EQ parameters, one inverted, and limited to a certain level. so you wont overdo the EQ'ing

I have the jog-wheel pretty well figured out, the hardest part is making the actual "wheel" look right.

The "smart-faders" are the three extra crossfaders in the middle, supposedly to allow per-frequency fading between tracks. This would probably require ableton, but I'm working on incorporating some more ableton-friendly features into the controller too.
I'll take note of the buttons, good call. If you feel like laying out something on your own, using my top-drawing, feel free. Might be a little easier to explain that way
Demetra Pinizzotto
23.01.2011
smart faders? the ones in the middle?
you might want to add some buttons for modifiers/shift/modes. especially when you want smart faders & knobs.

looking at you're thread these controllers could very well be easier to make then your turntable controller.
A jogwheel is probebly quite hard to make... I cant really tell since I've never made anything.
Lewis Stumpf
23.01.2011
Yeah.
I suppose I oughta post it here, but I reckon it'd be bad for business abandon my own thread like that :P

I'm still on track on making my own turntable controller, but who knows, maybe I'll get on to more advanced things when that ones done

EDIT: What'd you believe of the mixer though. I'm pretty fond of the smart-mixer faders, as well as the layout. Any thoughts?
Demetra Pinizzotto
23.01.2011
I recognize the outer units
you produce nice stuff while dosing:P
colour is quite dark tho, maybe some light reflection on the units to make it pop out
(just for presentation)
cant wait till I get to learn maya much more expressive then photoshop with these kind of mockups.

haha, you did get a bit of track, starting at a sigledeck arduino ending up with that

Cool, do show!
Consider looking @ sparkfun's eagle library (http://www.opencircuits.com/SFE_Footprint_Library_Eagle), and their standards for buttons matrices.
They sell assembled boards, as well as rubber overlays for buttons.
I'm a little more fond of their approach to button pads than Livids, as the boards are a lot more well layed out, they support multi-color leds, etc.

I should be throwing up some pictures of my own button-matrix soon, using it as a prototype for my controller. I'm prototyping with the sparkfun board

I have seen the 4 midi loop.
(it wasn't released at namm, richie hawtin reviewed it in his hotel room during namm. he had one with him.)
it looks good, I have the same problem with is as with the faderfox units. the buttons are just to small, no LEDs in the buttons, everything is cramped in a small space.
Ive seen te introduction video on the site, the features look amazing, you can really control everything. (btw price is quite steep too,

The only thing that seems to be out there is the x session pro and that this is a piece of plastic crap.

that sounds good but im sure if either of these companies get ahold of these they will be way over priced, they will try to make there own input and probably end up screwing them up.

How about we all petition DJranking s to make these bad boys. We all no that they can and will do it. Also while they do it they will keep us in mind and not try to make it there own. I believe if anybody should make these it should be Techtools or some mad scientist. But I believe the man who started this thread should get some credit. Im sure Techtools would be the only one to do that.

That was what I had up my sleeve Joost, and the reason I was waiting to post my stuff, damn you man! :P

I'd like to throw my skills into this mix and look into the idea of a couple different controllers, soon as I'm done drawing PCB's for my own controller (which you guys are WELCOME to integrate into this mockup-maddness, wink wink), I'll sit down and flesh out the mixer concept as bit, as well as looking at a way to make the effects unit too.

EDIT: I'm pretty excited about all this, I'll take 15 minutes off and do a top-down of my own controller for photoshopping. If any of you want to mock up things based on arcade buttons, check over to my own thread in a few minutes

Are there clear arcade buttons because im sure we all dig the LED's

nice one tekki

Ive got two exams next week, so I wont be making a new mockups before next weekend.
I want to make my next mockups in the same style as the FX unit, I better like the white LEDs.
Ill try to make the whole serie and post them all at once.
till then. keep posting ideas, mockups and comments

So i was looking at my X1 and it already has the pitch bend and temp. hahahahahaha my bad... pitch fader would still be cool tho.

Carry on

22.01.2011
little idea how the serie would look like,

note:
I have not changed any of the pictures, they're the same I posted before.
In my last post I told my idea, this is just to look at the whole picture, as it is now, unchanged

You the man! (did i say that already?)

Since i started playing with the X1 I find myself only touching the VCI to Cue, pitch bend and adjust the EQ. the X1 has everything that u need to set hot cues and use FX. (Using Traktor anyway)

and at a price of 199, with a unit being made sold at a similar price. Getting another X1 and one of these possible 4 channel or two channel "Mixers" with (hate to beat a dead horse) pitch bend would be EPIC!!!

Then other units that stray away from the X1 unit and have all the FX, Super faders and arcade buttons for CUE Juggle.
Demetra Pinizzotto
22.01.2011
maybe a completely new serie of controllers, not based around the X1. but follow up the unit.
kontrol Version 2
something like:
X2: transport, deck, 4x FX assign buttons, tempo controls
FX2: Cue points, 2X FX controls, assignable faders (for super faders etc.) like my FX1 mockup
M2: two channel mixer, EQ, gain, filter, pan, headphone cue, master volume, volume faders, crossfader. (similar to my second or third M1 mockup)
SD2: sample deck, and other features that would go nice with the new traktor. freely assignable touchpad maybe?

all of them with usb ports on the side so you can connect them together tight. so only one usb chord going to the PC/MAC.

no lables on the buttons, or on the face plate. labled overlay with standard mapping.

would be great. Looking forward to something like that
anyone want to add a unit?
Dj aziz mastouri
22.01.2011
Also was believeing. On a two channel mixer.. could you add two pitch faders and pitch bend buttons as well.

Problem i have with a midi controller with out jog wheels is... When ever im at a party and i need to mix in a track from some one else using CDJ or Turns. I need to beatmatch into my session. with out a jog wheel or pitch bend I would be lost

So i believe a pitch bend and pitch faders would be really nice. Think it would only look good on a two channel. with the four it might be to cluttered.

agreed, it takes the modular idea away.
that you can add and move around the different parts that make a S4 or VCI for instance.

If I'd just split the controls over 2 units and make them equal, you can still use it as a 2 channel mixer. or use 2 to create a 4 channel mixer.
Ok enough of this!!! I was getting ready to sell my vci 100 and Kontrol X1. Shit not now! I believe i will wait. This was is exactly what i want!

Do me a favor tho. Can you take the Traktor logo off there and put your own DJTechTools label on it?

You kind sir are the shit. EAN GIVe THIS DUDE A JOB!

As I mentioned, I've had a busy week.
I'm getting back to it this weekend hopefully

EDIT: I'm working on the internals of the jog-wheel for my own controller at the moment too, getting the pcb layed out and such. I'll have a look at the controllers here again, try and mess around with the design for the effects unit, that one looked exciting
Demetra Pinizzotto
21.01.2011
got anything done yet?

Lewis Stumpf
17.01.2011
Small self-bump.

I'm a little busy this week (got a bunch of hand-ins due on top of each other), so I'm postponing work on dj stuff for a little bit.
I'm making good progress though, currently looking at the internal placement of components, spacing etc.
I'm going to look into to FX unit posted some pages back next, as I believe that offers some interesting possibilities.

I'd like to look at incorporating a small USB hub in the mixer, but that won't be for a little while.

Keep the ideas coming
