Production competition?
Posted on: 21.12.2009 by Verona Fashbaugh
Maybe nobody will go for this idea. But I like it.

I believe that if multiple people took part in this, we could learn a lot from one another. Let's say we start with a series of parameters and basic guidelines for a track, and then whoever wants to can make their own track based on these simple guidelines.

For example, let's say for one of them the track has to be a basic house track, with a simple 4x4 beat and the use of a 303-ish synth, make use of some common sample, and be three to four minutes long.

Additionally, this could help people broaden their production skills by encouraging them to try to produce styles they hadn't before.

And, say that in general we could have a new set of guidelines to use each week, so that the whole thing would be a fairly quick, but insightful, endeavor.

Just an idea. I suppose it's not really a competition, but a giant collaboration project of sorts.

Any thoughts?

I'm not fond of bush or anything but I just believe this sample is wicked. Voices spoken are cool, I've been in love with them in music since I heard a remix to "I have a dream" speech

edit: By the way, I believe I've come up with something already
I like it, needs a lot of work still so I'm not gonna give you guys a sneak preview but I've got a cool idea I believe.
comon people join this competition it could be so much fun..

Maybe you'd like to choose the sample next time? thats cool

Faux News Network? Lol. Come on now...

If you look at the sample for what it is (that being spoken words), I believe it's pretty cool. If you don't like it, I don't want you in my competition anyway.

I'm just kidding . But really. Someone else could start finding the samples, too! I just like how spoken word samples sound, personally.

Sounds good!

That's weird about your arms though. At least your getting better.

And you can use as much or as little of the sample as you want, provided that you use at least some of it. And use whatever effects you want. If you wanna autotune the sample, knock yourself out, lol.

14.01.2010
Wow that is (again) a reeally cool sample I'm in this time, starting... NOW :P

No my arms are getting better though, it's strange, I just woke up one morning and both my wrist just hurt like hell, later both elbows and even later my other wrist too!
But yeah I saw some doctors and now with some medicine it's OK.

edit:
Do we have to use the entire length of this sample after another? Or can we cut, paste, delay reverb etc.?
Verona Fashbaugh

Alright well if no one else is going to try to make up some guidelines, let's say that this time it goes like this:

1. Again, anything between 125-140bpm
2. The majority of the song should NOT be a basic 4x4 beat
3. Use this sample: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=15376
4. Finish by January 22, 2010

(No political affiliation or endorsement is implied. I just like the sample )

Bonus points for using a hoover sound: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=11506

Participants:
1. Lambox (I'm actually going to do it this time )
2. sj03w4t
3. THEWETBANDITS

I'll listen to rjw's creation soon, cool you finished something! As far as the next competition goes, I don't really care for extension or a new assignment.. keep it up!
Sorry to hear that. What did you do to your arms?

I'm definitely down to actually do this. I have tons of free time now. And actually my room mate just moved out so I can make as much noise as I want. I'm going to look for a new sample to use right now.

hey guys
I had my eye on this thread for a bit but arrived a little to late to make a stab at trying to finish something in time... I would however definitely be up for the next one.
Thoughts on the parameters for it?

I don't mind if you extend the deadline on this, seems fair to me seeing as no-one else got round to having a go!

What does everyone else believe?

and I'd of never of even looked at making something as slow as 125bpm before so this is out of my comfort zone fun making this though, having boundaries like bpm/sample restrictions has taken me in a different direction - might even develop it into a full tune!

Anyone else had time to throw anything together?
Nice job! That's the whole point of this "exercise" though... to gain experience doing other stuff.

If people are still interested, we can start a new one. Or we could extend the deadline for this. But, in the interest of fairness since rjw did actually get something done we should probably start something new.

Anyone got any bright ideas? I don't want to be the only one coming up with these restrictions...

I live off of campus, and due to some clerical issue or something, My 17 credit hours got dropped.... and I had to pay a 100 dollar late fee, as well as reregister/waitlist my schedule. Its been pretty rough, but i'm almost back to the way I had things before.

Yeah dude I know I've been real busy the past week too. I just moved on campus so I haven't even had time to believe about this... My bad guys.

How'd all your classes get dropped? Do you live on campus?

Sure. I'm assuming your in. List of participants:
1: Lambox
2: sine143
3: mpetersen3
4: djhipnotikk

Anyone can join. The rules are simple:
1: Use this sample, in any way you wish: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=36105
2: Keep the bpm anywhere between 125 and 140
3: Use some kind of acid-sounding synth
4: The "deadline" is anytime before Jan. 11th.

Other than that, it's all you. If you want a poorly thought out, badly constructed example, check out my 10-minute-slop-together here (warning! extremely bad and generic, please do better than this ): http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/42382700/file.html

Okay. we'll say 125-140 bpm. How's that?

Lol I've never even attempted to produce psytrance. If you take away the sample and bpm restrictions, that only leaves the acid-synth requirement.

The goal of this whole thing was to see what people come up with when given some general guidelines. I guess you can get away with not using the sample, I just thought it would be interested to see what different things people come up with.

If no one likes that idea, no big deal. Anyone else want to generate some guidelines?

Alright we'll see if anyone bites. Since no one else seems to have any other ideas, let's say you have to use this sample: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=36105

As far as bpm goes, let's try something I'm not used to... let's say 110 to 120.

And the only other requirement is that you incorporate some type of acid sounding synth.

(As a late note, let's say that all the samples that are a "requirement" to use have to be public domain, or under the creative commons license).
