Production competition?

Maybe nobody will go for this idea. But I like it.

I believe that if multiple people took part in this, we could learn a lot from one another. Let's say we start with a series of parameters and basic guidelines for a track, and then whoever wants to can make their own track based on these simple guidelines.

For example, let's say for one of them the track has to be a basic house track, with a simple 4x4 beat and the use of a 303-ish synth, make use of some common sample, and be three to four minutes long.

Additionally, this could help people broaden their production skills by encouraging them to try to produce styles they hadn't before.

And, say that in general we could have a new set of guidelines to use each week, so that the whole thing would be a fairly quick, but insightful, endeavor.

Just an idea. I suppose it's not really a competition, but a giant collaboration project of sorts.

Any thoughts?

I would like to leave the style open -not that im opposed to new ideas for the next contest.. I just have to make hiphop stuff when im freelance producin for rappers & shit. & If i'm going all out with this - I need creative control over the style.

I just realized I spaced out and forget to actually post my response to everyone's track other than sj03w4t.

Wetbandits: I loved your synths. To be honest, I thought you went a little overboard with the empire of oppression stuff. Way to use the hoover sound though!

charo: you definitely get the award for the most original song of the group imo. Like I mentioned before, what you did with the radio thing was cool, great job all around.

That's a great idea. Let's take a couple of days to get a group opinion from everyone who wants to get involved and then we can come up with a sample everyone likes.

I am up for anything, but some ideas to get things rolling with the sort of guidelines I would find more interesting (and more challenging):

idea 2 - uplifting trance (maybe someone could even pick the key as another guideline)

Cheers everyone, looking forward to the next round...
Also a great idea. The whole premise of this was to get people (myself included) to do things they weren't used to in order to expand their abilities. So... let's also take a few days to come up with a musical style that everyone is interested in doing.

So basically, it comes down to this:

Do we want to use:
1. Stephan's aforementioned voice/sampler/etc. to come up with a sample.
2. A sample from the remix manifesto movie
3. ...or something else...?

and

Do we want to do:
1. A hip-hop song with a string-based melody
2. An uplifting trance song
3. ....or something else...?

(I believe it would be cool to use some sort of ambient melodic voice sample... just a suggestion... [*nods at stephen*])

Also, I just want to say thanks to everyone. I didn't believe anyone would go for this thing. This is way cool!

Nice job everyone, we're all over the map but it was fun for sure-
some thoughts on the other mixes:

sj03w4t: I liked your drums, they were nice and rhythmic even though out of 4/4. It definitely could have used some more elements but I believe the synth was meaty enough that it helped fill things up, which was good.

Lambox- I thought your mix was nice and upbeat, good job with the hoover. I thought it sounded a little video-game-ish (maybe what you were going for).

Charo- I really liked how you used the vocal clip- slowing it down sounded good and I especially liked how you chopped it and looped it to kick off the song- sort of what I was going for although I agree that I overused it (badly)(sj03w4t)...

Charo and lambox, you guys both did really interesting things, personally I thought both songs weren't quite musical enough - they bounced around but didn't seem particularly unified... this is just a personal thing as I'm not really a minimal/experimental fan at all.

^^^ Actually I've never heard of that, but the next time I get myself over to the library I'll definitely look for it.

If that movie is creative commons, and there is some simple way for all of us to get the audio from it, then let's go for it.

Charo, what you did with the sample was killer. Nice job!

Anyone wanna pick a potential "winner?"

I dont know about you guys, but this is really cool (not trying to brag or anything), its cool to see what different people come up with when given some basic parameters! Thanks for actually doing this you guys!!

Who's ready for the next one?!? Any ideas??!??

1984, anyone?
have you read or heard about We by Yevgeny Zamyatin? that's a good one too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_%28novel%29

as for ideas, here is the link to the RIP!A remix manifesto: http://www.hulu.com/watch/88782/rip-a-remix-manifesto

we could take a vocal snippet about remixing or the use of samples or even just have no set snippet, just use the audio from some part of the movie.

i believe the whole movie is creative commons & believe there is already some songs doing just that, and we could link the best of ours to that website at the end.

just an idea.

sj03w4t, since you tore all of us to shreds, I thought I'd return the favor. (I also liked your "compliment followed by criticism" format, so I thought I'd follow)

I liked the way your beat never just sounded like a looped sample. I also liked the way you maintained a calm energy and rhythm throughout. Nice job. A little too minimal for my liking, but hey... that's the point of this whole experiment, isn't it?!

Thanks for participating everyone, I'm glad this was more successful the second time around.

Anyone care to come up with a new sample and guidelines? I guess if no one does in the next 24 hours or so, I'll just start looking for a new sample, but I'd rather have someone else generate something.

Please consider this as constructive criticism not a burn-down.
Hey charo,
I really liked your intro with that 'searching radio' thing that's awesome
Just from 0:38 onwards it started being strange and I thought it was some random long-notes and a couple of hits in between..
I found it to have not enough structure and rhythm.

Lambox:
you sure have enough variation! cool
That hoover sound fits quite nicely into your composition I believe. Also lol @ having same vocal delay idea :P
Around 1:21 it's cool beat but I don't really like the synth sound to be honest.

@THEWETBANDITS:
I liked your bass sound but I believe it would be epic if you added more drums to it. Also, the bit of the sample 'empire of oppression' drove me nuts after a while.

No offence anyone, I invite you to burn down my track :P lol j/k

here's my "track" didn't have as much time as i thought i would on it. went old school, recorded bush speech onto tape, and from there no computer til some editing at the end.

I used my asr-x pro, a 4-track tape recorder, a Arp Quartet (1979 synth), and fm radio for the beginning part.

that quote to me is very future post societal breakdown, where a big brother police state struggles to keep control through use of increasing control... guess that's the angle of inspiration...like what music might sound like in a world where playing music is going to get your door kicked in, or something...

first time using soundcloud hope this works:
edit how does soundcloud take to create the waveform for you guys?

It's still uploading now but it should appear any moment:

I used solely Reason, which I'm not that good with but I like it. I don't have monitors but a red 'clipping' light showed in reason on some parts, no time to fix it
I hope you likes.. I believe it's not that good but well here goes

edit:
oh and yeah it's kinda repetitive at the middle-end but lack of time is a good excuse??

Ok, here it is. This is pretty much my first real stab at production, have been adding more and more drums/bass/effects to mashups but haven't made a full track before. I like the funkiness of the synths once they kick in, tried to create a contrast between the opening sample and the rest of the song (military-type beat contrast to the later funk)... but I really don't like how the opening sounds and especially the hoover sounds super out of place.

I was assuming "not a 4x4 beat" means no 4 on the floor kick, and not out of 4:4 time (which would be pretty silly for dance music anyways).

In short, I like the funky syncopation and the synths, but I don't like the beginning and the track would need a lot of work (probably taking out the vocal sample entirely and really re-doing a lot of it) for us to be ready to release it... although it might be added to the "projects pile."

Thanks for any feedback and/or criticism

Oh, and one other thing: I spent a lot of time looking for a free auto-tune VST that will run on an intel mac with no success (I might be happier with the track if I spent less time looking for that and more on the production itself... lol). Any suggestions?
Jayne Yellowhair

Well the expiration date is today which is cool but I'm a little nervous because I'm not really happy with my track. I have never produced a broken beat like this so please be easy on me :P . I'm on the wrong PC now, so I don't have the track here but I'll upload it later this evening. Looking forward to others!

oh i would isolate the vocals from any background noise. boost it to sound higher quality.. any drastic changes (like making it robotic & such) can be made by the artests remixing.

& for sure on topic can you submit a link to that remix video. then we can all find some favorite parts, ill rip, isolate and clean them up the best i can then host them for dl and mixing.

programs like totalrecorder make getting audio like you are talking about easy, or when i'm in linux its easy to route the audio through audacity to record it there.

lets talk more about that remix movie when the next comp is going to get started.

honestly, you'd be better off asking the rhetorical question what'd i not do in Ableton.. hah well reading my original post Ill go over what i believe you may be asking, "how i get the audio out of the video."?

- Drag a video into one of the open clips in Ableton (example Audio 1 top clip)
- After it loads copy it, switch to the session view and paste it (in the Audio1 track.)
- Got to File > Export Audio/Video
- Choose your Data & Audio setting but under Video where you see Create Video File select to turn it off

Render & now you have a .WAV from the video.

by clean it up.. I meant put it threw the process where i throw on the Bose headphones & go threw all my "clean it up" mastering tweeks/effects to make it perfect.

yo that asr-x pro looks dope, so does your idea about incorporating samples from a remix movie. if you need help getting any parts out just throw me the url & approximate time of sample you want. lets get some bad ass stuff everyone wants to get in on!
