Production competition?
Posted on: 21.12.2009 by Verona Fashbaugh
Maybe nobody will go for this idea. But I like it.

I believe that if multiple people took part in this, we could learn a lot from one another. Let's say we start with a series of parameters and basic guidelines for a track, and then whoever wants to can make their own track based on these simple guidelines.

For example, let's say for one of them the track has to be a basic house track, with a simple 4x4 beat and the use of a 303-ish synth, make use of some common sample, and be three to four minutes long.

Additionally, this could help people broaden their production skills by encouraging them to try to produce styles they hadn't before.

And, say that in general we could have a new set of guidelines to use each week, so that the whole thing would be a fairly quick, but insightful, endeavor.

Just an idea. I suppose it's not really a competition, but a giant collaboration project of sorts.

Any thoughts?

i believe you have a good point on using a vocal so we are working on new material, esp. with our last remix one.

someone should just decide quick and i believe we should get rocking...i believe i'm going to use renoise or maybe ableton for this one, the red devil X will still want to play...

thanks for the breakdown on how you work, i'll try more organization and structure for this one.

Hey all
Sorry to be late responding, took off for the long weekend and didn't have internet for a while.

Thanks for the tip sj03w4t, I was using the embed code that soundcloud provides and it was just showing up as junk.

xbelt- I though your mix was pretty solid, I believe maybe rearranging the vocals could have made it more interesting (more varied). In your original there were a few cool little build effects when you looped the synth chord sound, but it never really dropped and just sort of faded back into the mix. I believe if you made a bigger distinction between the builds and drops it might be more interesting, also it seemed like that synth was pretty loud compared to the rest of the track, especially with the vocals added in.

charo- Another interesting mix that went a totally different direction. I like the bass, seems like it's what holds the song together. Like your last one, I guess I'm just not really sure how to approach it as I don't know much about minimal/ambient.

Thanks for the positive feedback, we had fun making it for sure and it was cool to work with something a little different. We're using Ableton and start out making a few different drum patterns (build, break, longer pattern, ect). Generally then lay these out in a rough idea of how we want to structure the song, where we want a breakdown, ect, then start putting in the bass and rest of the sounds. We liked the "phoneme" sound and the chorus so decided to use those rather than the verses, and to use the phoneme with some effects to fill in sections around the chorus. Then we just play around for a while until it sounds ok, trying to always keep at least one element changing to make things interesting.

As for the next one, I believe we're more interested in the production side of this rather than doing another remix, we have done a number of mashups and remixes and were hoping to get practice on this thread to create some beats and melodies of our own. I believe using a vocal sample is helpful as most electronic songs use one, but we've got a bit of a preference to keep trying new things every round. This site has a bunch of stems available if someone has a different idea for a vocal sample to use. That said, we're definitely ready for the next round and if everyone else wants to do more of a remix that's cool too.

Yes that is better because if you have a song and you don't like or it's not that good you don't feel like improving it.
Well some of you said my track has a lack of vocals so what do you believe of that:

I like the idea of doing a re-edit on an old song, the only thing is that it would obviously be up to each individual to buy the song, as we're not trying to promote piracy.

But it's up to you guys what the rules are. Next time I'll have the time again to participate.
thanks, just trying new things and trying to get better.

sorry for the confusion, i meant that we should individually take our old tracks we have been working on and do a re-edit and the basis of the competition would be to see which re-edit was most improved.

edit: got a chance to listen to them all, nice work! i believe each of you could teach me a thing or two that's for sure

Sorry guys once again I wasn't able to get anything done I guess it's a sign of my work ethic. I've been busy with schoolwork and trying to get a song produced for my girlfriend for Valentine's day. But either way, I can't believe how many of you guys are into this whole idea!

xbelt: Nice job, real smooth throughout. Would have been better with the vocals, but overall you did a great job.

wetbandits: Phenomenal work! I love it!

sj03w4t: Great job. The only thing I would suggest would be slightly more variation in your drum loops.

charo: you definitely get the award for taking it in a completely different direction. Nice job

http://soundcloud.com/charotapeproductions/djtts-comp2-song

sorry it was late, better late then never as they say.

as the next comp, I believe we should do something like we take an old song we have been working on and improve on it, do a re-edit.

but that's just an idea as requested, like the other ideas as well.

i'll take a listen to the rest this afternoon...the confusion of soundcloud might be the embed link that soundcloud gives when you click share. just use the www address of your track on soundcloud in between the soundcloud brackets.

To insert soundcloud, put the link between [soundcloud*] and [/soundcloud*] tags (remove *)
like this:
http://soundcloud.com/thewetbandits/doubt-thewetbandits-remix

I love this one by THEWETBANDITS, it has great hit potential! (so I added it to my favourites on soundcloud )

xbelt: nice song, except I missed a vocal! Would have been a cool addition IMO.

Here it is.

We weren't sure how to get a soundcloud player inserted in here... anyone?

Suggestions for the next comp:
-Use this vocal sample (vocals ONLY, you need to use your own instruments)
-120-140 BPM
-Due in two weeks (that way we can critique what we've got, decide on a sample, and have at least a week to work on it)

This is part of a remix comp, so if you like what you've done for DJTT you'll have another 2 weeks+ to fine tune it then submit for the contest.

Ok here's my pruduction:
djtt competition 2.mp3
I'm not really happy about it but as I already said, I'm a beginner with almost no experience in producing.
I almost forgot that we have to post our rules:
1) 128-145 BPM
2) Key C
3) Deadline: February 20th
4) Use whatever style you want
5) Use this sample: http://moviethemes.net/music/Star_Wa...ial_Medley.mid (well you can adjust the instruments and don't use the whole samlpe)

shit we could have killed 2 birds with 1 stone and all entered the official "delphic" competition if it wasn't a "while back" so are we remixing this track, you said "at least one" sounded like the more the better... making this more or less a remix comp. - other than a straight production comp. thou both sit in the same chair just in a different hat.. either way im down, downloaded half the stems already..

I like it.

These rules subject to change in the next 24 hours based on feedback by everyone involved. I felt like no one was ever going to make a decision, so here we go...

1. Let's say you have to use at least one of these stems:
http://soundcloud.com/delphic/sets/doubt-stems

2. This time, use whatever beat style you want... if you want to go straight 4x4 throughout, knock yourself out.

3. Finish the "song" by Feburary 11th

4. Come up with your own set of rules for us to use next time. Please don't submit a song without giving your own ideas for guidelines in the same post

I'm curious what you all believe of these guidelines, so let's hear what you have to say before anyone gets started.

I kind of agree with this, maybe we could give it a shot? I mean, leaving the style open.
So now: the first to come with a good sample will be the hero of us all and we will use that sample

I completely forgot about this thread  !!! Sorry guys!

Since no one can agree on how to go about this, I'll just come up with some rules based on the ideas that you all had. I'm supposed to be in class in 3 minutes though, I'll set up from rules when I get back to my room in a few hours!

I should have time to get a beat down this round, also open to anything. Stonesthrow reccords have had a weekly beat competition for ages and have a nice simple system in place for running it maybe we could follow a similar format using drop to publish the sample's/rules and entries all in one place. Have a look at this weeks battle to see how its done:
