DJTT Mix competition - Whos got the balls?
DJTT Mix competition - Whos got the balls? Posted on: 10.08.2012 by Lawana Spratlen Who wants to go in a head to head mix off?We can do a knockout competition and run a vote. Kinda like a mix train but a bit different. The rules (Any input welcome): 30 - 45 min Any Genre Any format ie vinyl, traktor, ableton, serato or whatever! Whos in? Put your names down and I will randomly sort out who plays against who | |
Yong Aptekar 16.08.2012 | Jojo, I like the way that sounds, anonymity makes the comp much more honest and keeps any favoritism to a minimum. DJTT did a comp a while back where the tracks were selected, I like the idea of using our own tracks though. |
Leeanna Ayla 16.08.2012 | Mix competitions are traditionally well received on here, but not very well participated in or voted on. I believe if we're going to do this we either need a set of specific songs that each DJ has to pick from or each DJ picks a genre they want to be in. I don't see a point in a dubstep set going up against a techno set when one may win over the other purely based on how many more people like a genre. This should be about the mixing not about which genre is more pouplar. We can also have an open class where you can play whatever you want. Another idea that just struck me is to categorize mixes by BPM. Say under 123, 123-127, 127-135 over 135. I'm just believeing out loud here so speak up. I would load a mix into Traktor and place it in whatever category Traktor tells me a mix averages out to BPM wise. Some more thoughts.
Any other ideas? |
Roseanne Torstenson 15.08.2012 | Count me in! I would be willing to participate in this. |

Shonda Soulier 16.08.2012 | I love the idea. Would be fun. How about making this an ongoing feature from quarter to quarter? One quarter we'll do a 30-45 minute mix, the next a 10 minute mashup, the next an original remix with provided stems... |
16.08.2012 | A mix competition is different to a routine competition imo. |

Addie Engbrecht 11.08.2012 | 10-15 min is too short....30 min or longer is prob borderline too long to listen to a bunch of mixes. When I make a demo mix I shoot for about 20-25 min range, I'm believeing that might be the sweet spot for this competition, but thats just me |

Proper, full length DJ mix that's what blows up my skirt.. I'm probably just old school, but some little 10 mins mix doesn't cut the mustard I'm afraid. Rant over... any way Mo is King and kicked arse toevening and the Jamaican's showed how the USA's 3 how to sprint (I don't count Gatlin - he's a drug cheat, always will be!). |
Vernie Kuam 11.08.2012 | I believe that 10-15 minutes of (DYNAMIC) mixing in a video would make for a pretty cool contest! As opposed to the exclusively controllerism performance routines that have dominated DJTT's most recent contests, a more mix-based contest would tap the talented-yet-unexamined pool of performance djs that are great at quick mixing, live mashup, and longform sample use. As a dj that uses serato, this is much more the style of performance that I try to perfect. An example of this kind of DYNAMIC mixing is found in this great clip of Kissy Sell Out (skip to 4:54 to get past the chattering) -- . |
Rey Holubar 11.08.2012 | Um, why don't you let DJTT create and run any DJTT competitions? I read the title of this thread hoping to find out a new one was started and was disappointed. How about we talk ideas for competitions and even better, prizes. Like the competition 2 or 3 years ago where a DJ gig in the south pacific was the grand prize. I could use a cool vacation. scamo |

Frieda Swoboda 10.08.2012 | I believe you need to keep the length pretty short though, sort of like the video contests or MF 3D contests so people actually listen/watch the entries. Personally, I have no time to listen to 15 different 40 minute mixes. So "routines" like live remixes or live mash ups would be better. They are short and easier to judge. |
