Pioneer DDJ - SX, first "serato dj" controller

So, I just read an article on ddjt where they say that Pioneer is working on a new controller for the newest serato software. The controller will be launched on the first of November. Here are some specifications from the new controller.

1. Performance pads. Similar to the Novation TWITCH and the Vestax VCI-380 (and velocity-sensitive, like the latter), the controller’s performance pads will control samples, cues, loop rolls and a slicer

2. “Dual Deck” mode. This will apparently let you link two decks (ie A&C, B&D) and manipulate them as one

3. 4-channel standalone hardware mixer. Like the Vestax VCI-400 (finally), the unit will also work as an analogue mixer

4. Slip mode. Slip mode lets you manipulate the track (scratching, looping, triggering cue points), then when you exit slip mode, the track will continue where it would have been before you began. It’s a popular feature on CDJs from Pioneer and Denon

5. Other high-end features. Fader start, dedicated filter knobs and large platters point to this being very much a pro controller, that ought to appeal to those playing out as much as bedroom DJs. Assuming it has decent microphone ins and balanced/booth outputs, that is…

So, what do you believe? A new ground-breaking product or another regular dj-controller?

You can always post some new updates of information about the new controller in this thread.

man this looks really good, i mean its the perfect, almost full-sized serato controller

and by the looks of it looks like the xfader is user replaceable as well - nice addition

SSL isn't any more "free" than Itch...

The controller is just meh to me; great in theory but far too large and unwieldy to be practical. Doubt clubs would bother with it as long as they can afford CDJs because this would be pretty much the same but CDJs are actually usable without a computer. Probably good for mobile DJs who really want Serato; but they generally don't need all the extras here and would likely be far better served with something like the Denon MC6000. Probably good for festival types who want gear they can move around more easily that will be pretty comfortable for people used to CDJs. Maybe some will buy this for the home but at $2k it's not for everyone (and there are a lot of cheaper alternatives). And I wonder if this will even be allowed to work with timecode vinyl - would be sad if you had to add a soundcard to get that.

However, the Serato integration and update is the really big news here. MIDI mapping and effects are the two reasons I went with Traktor over Serato a few years ago, and having been very unhappy with some long-standing things about Traktor I would consider going back. iZotope effects could be a game changer. I really don't understand why the major DJ softwares never got around to allowing VST plugins (that would seriously have been the real game changer but it should've happened like 2-3 years ago), but having iZotope do them is probably the next best thing at the moment; all their effects that I've heard are VERY nice. A "stutter" effect of some sort could wipe the floor with Traktor's beatmasher. And the slip mode is something Traktor should have had a long time ago. Decent filters that can be tweaked either with one knob or three will also be a boon for Serato users. Plus decent MIDI mapping? It's unclear whether this will offer the flexibility you get from Traktor or just basic 1-to-1 mapping; there's something to be said for the simplicity of the latter but its power in Traktor is immense.

If all these features get rolled out to SSL (or if the two programs are turned into one, though I don't know how that would work since SSL is free), that would be interesting indeed; that might be just the thing to get me back over to Serato.... especially if there was a way to use timecode without using an extra interface (even if I have to plug it in just to show I paid for it)... well, I can dream can't I?

A Standalone version of each deck would be killer, and be brilliant for installs.

Its a bit of a weird niche, not really club material due to it being all-in-one, not really bedroom DJ material due to price / size .. perhaps mobile dj material, but pricy compared to other controllers ?
Realistically, with the no hassle, plug and play nature of Serato + MIDI mapping + this fucking tank, this looks to be the closest thing to an "install controller" we've seen so far. Laptop DJs roll up to the club and patch into club gear , with user modifications, and that seems to be the method of operation for this kind of system

I keep going back and forth on whether USB input for MP3 would be a good choice. I believe it would have been, especially with the release of the Aero and Rekordbox mobile.

Finally Pioneer makes a controller that looks worth the money. This is the first controller of theirs that I've genuinely been blown away by.

Maybe over time they'll incorporate a "Scratch" license and ditch SSL.

With all these decent controllers coming with standalone mixer ability these days I wish you could "undock" the platters and use the mixer on its own if you wanted to.
Yeah this looks like a high end piece of gear, you're definitely getting a lot for your money if it turns out to be $1400.
