Pioneer DDJ - SX, first "serato dj" controller
Posted on: 02.10.2012 by Janella Gripe
So, I just read an article on ddjt where they say that Pioneer is working on a new controller for the newest serato software. The controller will be launched on the first of November. Here are some specifications from the new controller.

1. Performance pads. Similar to the Novation TWITCH and the Vestax VCI-380 (and velocity-sensitive, like the latter), the controller’s performance pads will control samples, cues, loop rolls and a slicer

2. “Dual Deck” mode. This will apparently let you link two decks (ie A&C, B&D) and manipulate them as one

3. 4-channel standalone hardware mixer. Like the Vestax VCI-400 (finally), the unit will also work as an analogue mixer

4. Slip mode. Slip mode lets you manipulate the track (scratching, looping, triggering cue points), then when you exit slip mode, the track will continue where it would have been before you began. It’s a popular feature on CDJs from Pioneer and Denon

5. Other high-end features. Fader start, dedicated filter knobs and large platters point to this being very much a pro controller, that ought to appeal to those playing out as much as bedroom DJs. Assuming it has decent microphone ins and balanced/booth outputs, that is…
(source: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/10...o-dj-software/)

So, what do you believe? A new ground-breaking product or another regular dj-controller?

You can always post some new updates of information about the new controller in this thread.

Just banged stickers all over my Twitch as i'd given up on Itch and hated the loose overlay when using Traktor. Looks like I'll be peeling them all of again in 2013. Serato had to do something and i'm intrigued, particularly by Izotope involvement.

No the controller has to be plugged in to make the software work properly.
Adding a secondary controller is exactly that - a second controller.

The DDJ-S1 is accurate to .01 bpm and imagine this unit will be the same

For reference the CDJ900 is .02 bpm

It is a shame because I though the Idea of the Aero was superb in that it allows you to make the transition between the studio > club easy as hell without spending 4k on CDJ's and a mixer. The build / layout though of the SX looks amazing in comparison but lacks that ability.

However if they brought out a modular version of the deck areas alone ..... guess I should buy a hacksaw :P
i hear you.

Honetly its the tastiest controller I believe I've ever seen and with a decent price, even if this was bloody Reloop it would be a good price given the feature set, but its Pioneer FFS.

Given that its too big for lugging around for the occasional set, and honestly don't see it being an install piece of kit with all the new toys coming out though its becoming harder to perform your "routine" at a club the same as you would at home without bringing a ton of shit with you.

  • Roll on a V7 alike version of the SX that can be used alongside CDJ's in a club
  • Roll on a Serato Ipad app so we dont need to lug laptops
  • Roll on reliable computers INSTALLED in clubs for whatever system(s) are in use and a simple method of plugging and playing.
  • Roll on standardized playlist formats across all DJ software for exporting to whatever happens to be installed.

Congrats to Pioneer though, in just a few months we've seen some serious innovation, game changers (IMHO) and quite literally "something for everyone" from Complete DJ Newbie to Seasoned Pro.

No Complaints from me apart from the price of CDJ's and I believe they missed a trick by not adding dual USB connectors.
so what you're saying is: it's a gorgeous controller that would look nice in your bedroom.

WTF does that mean? I can use a secondary controller as long as my DDJ-SX is always connected?! Doesn't that completely defeat the purpose?!

Looks sweet and if I used Serato I'd get one in a heartbeat(pending a review or two). But I'm on Traktor and in love with my VCI-400 EGE

Take the mixer portion out of the controller, and I envision how I predicted the CDJ will eventually look. With no CD input.

I never say that "this or that" looks like a toy.
Put the DDJSX just doesn't give me the confidence with cramped decks.
Altrough, for 999€ maybe, for 1500€ never.

Too big (and not enough adoption of Itch) for clubs. Too expensive for most home setups. This is a niche product at best.

Don't know if lights are mappable unlike at S1 and T1 but slip mode can be mapped with a little believeery...

Are the platter lights mappable in traktor does anyone know? Slip mode etc... Also it'll just be midi rather than HID if you map it

That should not be a problem as far as I know it's midi. So just about anything should be mappable to traktor, not so sure about the Jog LED's though. I'm so sold to this

they are charging for the software ??? $199 ? bad move. should be a sub $100 upgrade for DJ Intro users. They are trying to compete with Traktor.

This is why I feel the Pioneer AERO and the no laptop model is going to make a huge dent in the market.

You can easily get a nice controller and Traktor PRO 2 for half the price of this tank. Who is going to be lugging this to a gig?

I'd never buy another all-in-one but this appears to be the best yet - props to Pio/Serato

This is why using iTunes to organise music is good cause if you want to switch software they almost all have iTunes integration to a degree. Course grids and cues are a pain but at least playlists are there.

Personally I like it but I won't switch back to serato.

This screams BUY ME and I totaly want one, but do I realy want ro start using a new software? Restarted DJ'ing 3 years ago with VDJ last years switched to Traktor and looks like I'll be using Serato now or at least give it a try. Controller should be mappable to Traktor and I all ready have it all ampped out in my head. For $1200 I know I will get one for sure.
Jonathan Chiuchiolo

I wouldn't call it groundbreaking as they have just used all the good elements of every controller that pre dates it and haven't actually created anything new, but I would say marked destroying at the RRP... why would anyone buy anything else in the foreseeable future? It's PIONEER and it looks like they are taking controllers seriously finally.

First of all, I first saw the picture on digital dj tips and couldn't find it on any other site so I used it from their site. Secondly, I made the thread before there was an article on the djtt-blog. The reason why the thread seems to be later then the blog is because I edited the post (I inserted the picture).

But it doesn't matter who was first or from where I took the photo from. I made this thread to discuss about how "ground-breaking" Pioneer's new product could be...
