Jump Up Dubstep
Jump Up Dubstep Posted on: 11.11.2008 by kieran frearson I have been asked to make a mix for a friend with dubstep, and frankly, I do not know where to begin, since its not really my style of music. I LIKE it, and I have some stuff, but not that much. Its not my world so to say. I would like to get some more though, and I would like to make this mix for my dear friend (Its for his housewarming party in 2 months). I told him he can download some of the internet (there are plenty of mixes available online) but he just wants ME to make a mix haha Stubborn fuck! (Well, I do feel flattered!) So, could you people that are into the Dubstep recommend me some Dubstep? I dont mind if its dark or light, as long as it grooves! Thank you very much in advance! (In return, I will post the mix here, if its worth anything lol) Kind regards, Nemo | |
Leann Zugay 26.05.2010 | You weren't joking Edit: I wanted to edit this in regards to all of the excision tracks, but I can't even really describe how I feel, wow |
Audrey Pinda 26.05.2010 | Just an FYI, there are some killer new tracks up on Excision's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/excision |
Leann Zugay 26.05.2010 | I shat my pants, Yes, This http://soundcloud.com/boy-d/decay edit, you have to make it to 2:40 |
Al Henger 24.05.2010 | oh my god. That last tune is killer. All of them are sick as.. but the last one is going to be thrown into my set friday if I can find a place to buy it.... and I'm playing mostly *mainstream* dubstep, cause the crowd hasnt even heard the words Hopefully this one will drop like nothings business. hard to gauge a crowd of rave happy kids though EDIT Only 1000 copies printed wat!!!! |
Harold Jaras 24.05.2010 | those are huge no doubt! let's send this thread to the bassweight arena: absolutely huge killer vibes on this one |
Al Henger 24.05.2010 | Hmm, let me put something differrrrent up. This was the first dubstep song I ever heard, before I even knew what I was listening to. its a tad slower, but christ, the bass.... it brings down walls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi9aEWokniU I've recently been playing around with this one... it double drops nice with When I look at you, which kind of breaths some fresh air into that track..... another foundation wrecker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc_YP_H3ZEc |
Al Henger 24.05.2010 | Yeah man, I know how you feel, but honestly, although it was much of the same as far as stuff being released on that label, this Ep had some new elements, which was nice. The horn line inclusion was definitly welcome, and its some of the first "ravey" songs that I've heard that have successfully used them (rusko failed to use the horns well on his album, completely). EDIT Oh, and I love Azlans live MC work... but I dont know how I feel about many of the recorded tracks. |
Harold Jaras 24.05.2010 | can't stand anything coming out on rottun anymore.. this whole LP is sick: gotta love matty g's vibes rinsing this one atm |
Audrey Pinda 23.05.2010 | http://www.ustream.tv/channel/chronos-records Just letting you guys know an excellent live broadcast 10pm GMT. (aka NOW) I usually try and catch it every Sunday if I'm home. Chronos Records puts it out, and it's always a disgusting set. |
Cristine Stele 23.05.2010 | This is sick! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRKJTZ_M1Pg |
Roni Batchan 23.05.2010 | This is unreal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov-uLHaTjnI |
Al Henger 22.05.2010 | I know its wobble stuff, but god damn, the 4 tracks on this EP are just great, all of them. The mix of How low (although it is sans ludacris *thank god*) is way better than caspa's (although taht track is reallly bass heavy). Stand Up has a great horn line, that works well with the rest of the composition. Good times uses great vocal sample manipulation, and Punk is just overall a skanky tune!!! Glad I bought this EP, cause I can see any of these songs making their way into my sets. Cant find a vid for punk boohoo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFBT9074wx0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHvMJgAVvbA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqiVmTCkoLU |
Marguerite Salsedo 13.05.2010 | Just came across these two recently... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWsocmb1pnw&fmt=18 and... heavy metal meets dubstep... great results O_o! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w5k9rxIN7I&fmt=18 I believe I need to go disinfect my ears after that last one... damn that was grimey. |
Leann Zugay 12.05.2010 | Ahhhhhahahah That video led me to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLWB7...1&feature=fvwp |
Al Henger 12.05.2010 | Something a little more Awesomer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGADs2imUk8 |
Leann Zugay 12.05.2010 | Something a little cleaner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4aU-0_ja2Q |

But yeah, Its definitly diluted. There is definitely the Guettas of dubstep out ther (okay... maybe not that bad. wait for it, SEXY BITCH Dubstep style haha). Something I recognized on ruskos album, is he really avoided wobble overall (there were wobble tracks, but not tons). I really felt like he sat down, and wrote his songs on bass guitar, then drafted up a good bass sound in whatever program he uses. It kinda reminded me of some of his live shows (bass, Microkorg, sampler, mpd, MC). I believe that this kind of, return to the basics (bass guitar) and basically re inventing a classic sound, with new techniques and the endless possibilities that occur when you get to twiddling oscillator knobs, is really going to turn up something nice. Familiar, but fresh. Or, they could just go mainstream and make loads of cash. also, Rusko needs to chill out with talk box. |
Verona Fashbaugh 10.05.2010 | As a producer, I'm guilty of using a wobble sound (ie: LFO) as a backbone to create dubstep tracks. Even while I was doing it, I knew that it was taking the easy way out. Lately I've been trying to mix some clean synths in with wobble sounds, I don't know, I'm just sayin'. I believe part of the problem is that the word 'dubstep' has become what the word 'house' maye have been years ago. Flame me if you want, but other than a bunch of loosely-connected trends, much of dubstep is quite different. |
Al Henger 10.05.2010 | soooo many robot talking. so much... sucking my will to live. Honestly, I'm not what I would call "versed" in dubstep. I run around beatport looking for tracks, and grab what I like. Unfortunatly, it seems the only things that get pushed in the charts, are either hyperdub releases (as in...fun to mix and listen to, but not practical in a evening club scene here in the US) or robot sounds. Its hard for me to find a good, diverse set, of "danceable" dubstep. Dunno if I'll get flamed for this, but forget rusko, if anyones going to hit it HUGE in the mainstream it will be Joker. all of his releases are fundamentally likable, but he's done a good amount of work into gettin away from just playing chords and lead synths. |
Amada Brierley 10.05.2010 | Yeah to be honest I've got nothing against excision, he was a pioneer, maybe datsik too, but then we've got the INbreeding again, and you get "new" comers just doing the same thing. yeah FML, producers i'm gonna slap you if you bit crush your wobbles so they sound like a robot going yoiyoiyoiyoiy. Swear it. |
Al Henger 10.05.2010 | right on man, I definitely know what you are talking about. I love smoothed out dubstep, and I was listening to Burial far before I was listen to any other kind of dubstep. However, I really see benefits to both kinds... but I believe that if a middle ground was found (taking away the minimalness of smooth dubstep, and toning down the scariness of heavy dubstep/ravestep)... it would just kill the genre. I'd much rather see them move away from each other than towards each other. That said, I love some Excision, and all the guys on Rottun Records, and that style of dubstep. Its actually pretty stripped down, due to the lack of headroom that much bass allows.. I was never a fan of ruskos more wobbly stuff (I HATE that remix of Pronails), and I dont particurly like his feeble attempt to return to the dubby/reggae side of dubstep with his hornlines and bass guitar esque basslines. I dont like Robot bass. Please dubstep producers, no more robot/talking bass for the love of god. |
Amada Brierley 10.05.2010 | Dubstep is fundamentally changing in the UK at the moment. Wobbles have gone prime-time, I.e big epic wobbly stuff (grimey bass face stylee) remixes of pop music. Rusko's hold on makes a lot of sense if you're familiar with origins of dubstep, namely 2-step and garage, and for a lot of "headz" things are coming full circle and heading back that way. Dubstep as people knew it in the early-mid 2000's has carried on evolving, incorporating UK Funky (soca/housey) stuff, straight house, garage. This is the minimal dark steppy stuff. Some people are calling it Future Garage. It's kinda slowed (or sped up depending on your view point) to 130bpm, often incorporating 4x4 kicks as someone mentioned. This progression of minimal, atmospheric sounds is the genetic successor to 'dubstep'. On the other hand wobbly "filthy" dubstep has become the music of choice for the young generation in uk, the sound track to teenage drinking, experimenting with nasty drugs like mephedrone, dressing up like a twat and trying to pull some 16 year old who's snuck into the club. There are huge underage 'raves' here, no alcohol everyones on meph and 16-18. Its gross. This sort of 'dubstep' doesnt seem to be evolving, rather it's inbreeding, generic sounds, slight variations in formant screaming synths etc etc. I'm bored of it now, I don't hate it, it just doesn't do it for me excitement wise and I can't relate to that scene anymore. I don't know what I'm saying here, just making observations, check out Night Slugs, Jack Dixon, Roska, Joy Orbison, James Blake, Untold, Pariah etc TL;DR: Music genre's change and so do people's tastes |
Al Henger 10.05.2010 | oh, your on. Time to fight!!!! haha. I dunno, There were some parts of the sub focus mix that I really liked (as in, the drop). However, there were some parts I HATED (as in, the candy raver piano line, the stereotypical commercial hip hop snare rattling away like a machine gun with no balls). It was just... poor taste, and the fact that I like the drop just made me dislike the song even more due to the fact that it had great potential. |
Leann Zugay 10.05.2010 | The subfocus remix to that rusko track is way better, IMO |

Al Henger 10.05.2010 | nah, thats definitely dubstep man. It breaks into some floor on the floor sections, but it retains much of the basic elements of dubstep, which is definitly evolving (vocals are probably one of the biggest changes). The clap pattern (even though it isnt on the 3) is what keeps it in the dubstep feel for me personally, he has a number of percussion patterns, but they all have that sort of that side to side shuffle feel. I thought this was the best song off his album by far. If you guys feel like hearing some opinions on his last album, i did a sort of blog rant/freewriting thing on it as I cycled through it 4 or 5 times after picking it up. Read it Here |
Verona Fashbaugh 11.05.2010 | I guess this song just came out may 4th. Say what you want about Rusko, but this is a great song, and is unlike a lot of his other songs (for once). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auT66nczMVE edit: and now that I actually believe about it, this isn't really dubstep exactly... oops. Still a great track. |
