New Project: 1 Track Every Week, for 52 Weeks
Posted on: 21.09.2011 by Awilda Bolston
Hey guys,

I just started this project "52 to ZHU"
I am determined to release one track every week for 52 weeks, and film myself. I believe this is the way to separate myself from the herd.

Thoughts? Feedback

I love this idea, I wanted to do the same thing with scratching but just didn't end up doing it. I believe this is a great way to show how much work is required to really reach the next level. I believe a problem we have in society today is that we often only hear of people after they've reached success. We see overevening successes like reality tv stars, internet start ups, zuckerbergs, djs... you get the point. A lot of people overlook the fact that behind the scenes and before the spotlight these people are putting in work and grinding. I believe this idea is truly what the road to success and self actualization looks like, a series of ups and downs where you'll do some great work and some days where it's just not happening. There'll be days where you fail and hit blocks, but you stick with it. This is an awesome idea ZHU and I can't wait to see how far you've come in a year from now.

And there's a reason they all sound the same! He has, more or less, a formula he follows. He's not doing anything groundbreaking or innovative at all. And fair play to him, as long as people are silly enough to keep buying his tracks there's no reason for him to stop doing it.

BUT, from an artistic and creative point of view he is doing anything but be creative or artistic.

seems like a full time 24/7 job ... I dont like the idea that much..because its pretty much impossible to do 52 quality tracks in such a short time... we'll see

Yes you can. I'm not saying your idea is a bad one. Just as said before, make sure you are releasing quality tracks and if you have to sacrifice one or the other sacrifice quantity. Releasing quality tracks will for sure allow to gain a following. Trying to release a billion tracks back to back, if your quality is even mediocre I believe people will find it more spammy/see it as over saturation of content thus giving your tunes less appeal.

The curse with today's technology is that it's very, very and very easy to make a song a day and release it. For example, get a bunch of loop kits from FutureLoops et rest, re-arrange them inside Ableton Live, cut/copy and shuffle around, job done.

To make a unique track that either has a strong melody or otherwise pushes a genre to another direction, or a production or composition style that is unique where few if any sound similar, that's something rare and will be rewarded.

Well. question to you. Can you have both quality and quantity? today people are generating more content just because they need to, with touring and producing occurring simultaneously

Would you rather have me just slap him on the back and send him on his merry way, or just give my honest thoughts about this and hopefully he'll take note and try to push himself to do something different instead of just releasing the same exact sounding track but with different chord progressions?

While I do share some of the concerns over quality vs. quantity, I believe your idea is an interesting one. I wish you the best of luck.
