New Project: 1 Track Every Week, for 52 Weeks
Posted on: 21.09.2011 by Awilda Bolston
Hey guys,

I just started this project "52 to ZHU"
I am determined to release one track every week for 52 weeks, and film myself. I believe this is the way to separate myself from the herd.

Thoughts? Feedback

Had no idea you were a DJTT member. I had subbed to your YT but you don't post videos much. The year is almost over. Have you gotten signed yet?

Hopefully you do the same, it'll allow you to explore a whole range of styles you probably wouldn't have tried.

I don't know why people seem to be believeing quantity will somehow preclude quality if it's a full time job for you. It's definitely gonna be hard and you'll run into writers block occassionally for sure but I bet you'll learn to improve you composing vastly, and you'll learn some efficiency with your workflow as well!

Edit: I'm gonna toss a follow your way on soundcloud, should be a fun project to follow! All the best man, and maybe you'll give me some ideas. I wish I had more time to compose but school and all that.

The hook on the new one is way too similar to C'Thulu sleeps by deadmau5.
thanks man. its a good learning process. it forces you to continue through the times where you wished you didn't start this project

hey rex,

i studied piano and composition in the past. i tend to favor minor scales but i also compose more pop music in major scales. i like to do something that sounds unique and edgy. i have no set chords. sometimes you have to realize there are easier keys to compose in. Some bass notes have unfavorable resonant requencies.

Nice tunes! I can imagine it's hard work to get a song ready each week, but it's definitely worth it! Keep it. Will check out when comes more. Keep it up.
One additional question: Did I understood it correctly: You were offered to do a remix for JLo or even already did it?!

+We already saw you using the S4 massively. Why not to get in touch with the DJTT-Team for a "What's in your Dj bag"-Video for promotion? Just a hint.

Got a follow of mine in Soundcloud

A few comments, mostly directed to those who have something negative to say:

1. Anyone who is actually anyone in the DJ / producer world most likely isn't posting on this community . They don't have time. Thus, DJTT posters' advice regarding how to achieve success is worth exactly what you paid for it: nothing. Please, ignore them (and me).

2. Regarding quality vs. quantity: quality is achieved through QUANTITY. Anyone care to guess how many turds Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Modeselektor, Richie Hawtin, Gesaffelstein, etc. have on their hard drives? Tons.

Excellence in virtually any field is the product of time spent honing your craft.

What you're doing is unique in that you're releasing your work with less filters on quality. But given the nature of what you're doing and the timelines you're working with, I believe everyone understands that not everything you're putting out is 100% of what you're capable of.

This is a win-win for you: you get TONS of practice making tracks, your listeners forgive your mistakes and mediocre tracks, and focus on what you're doing that's exceptional. That's rare, and you're a smart guy for putting this together.

3. Related to #2 above, for those that are saying your sound is derivative or just "meh" -- it's a subjective call to be sure. But one thing is almost certain: after you spend 52 x 60hrs = 3,120hrs, you're quite likely to be an extremely proficient producer, a veritable badass, and you're also really likely to have a unique sound.

I for one like your sound. I agree it's not terribly unique yet, but there are some elements coalescing, and I'm sure you'll get there soon.

My advice to you: ignore all the retards posting on these community s. While they're busy talking about how meh you sound, you're likely to get exposure to someone in the industry who'll sign you.

I hope you have to cut your 52 weeks short so you can start touring.

Keep it up...like a boss.

P.S. I might copy you. You have been warned.

This is a great way to really see how far you've come, anytime you ever have an off day and wonder whether you're really improving or not you can just watch that first video and see how much progress you've made. Also not sure if you're a big reader but there's a great book called the Dip by Seth Godin, highly recommend it's a real eye opener, the books tag line is "how to know when to stick and when to quit". Pretty quick read too actually.

I believe a problem we have in society today is that we often only hear of people after they've reached success. We see overevening successes like reality tv stars, internet start ups, zuckerbergs, djs... you get the point. A lot of people overlook the fact that behind the scenes and before the spotlight these people are putting in work and grinding. I believe this idea is truly what the road to success and self actualization looks like, a series of ups and downs where you'll do some great work and some days where it's just not happening. There'll be days where you fail and hit blocks, but you stick with it. This is an awesome idea ZHU and I can't wait to see how far you've come in a year from now.
