DJ-Tech controllers 2009
Posted on: 15.01.2009 by Random X
Hey guys,

just found these new controllers by DJ Tech. Probably something they are displaying on NAMM?

I browsed to these by means of aboutdj.nl, and they have me believeing about the midst of xone:1d controllers and faderfox combined with a hybrid mixer?

The controllers xone:1d a like controllers are called Kontrol One and the mixer is called DJM-202.

I've got an iMix and I could recommend this unit to anyone (as shown on the pic a few posts earlier).

It ain't no creme de la creme, but it's a really great beginners/backup controller. I could easily survive a whole gig if my main unit was disabled somehow.

It's cheap, really simple, and provides you with the features you need as a beginner and of course all buttons can be mapped any way you like it. A nice feature (i assume it's just a lucky coincidence) is that you can plug in in your computer mid-set and traktor recognizes it without needing a reboot.

The only downside (the kind that you find out after you've bought them) are the jog wheels that emits one different midi-note depending on which direction you spin them, making them pretty lame for scratching (i assume - but I'm no scratch jockey myself).

The buttons feels a bit like the VCI-100, a bit harder to press but in no way impossible to get used to.

About 50% of the buttons have LED's beneath them, as easy to activate as the VCI-100 led's for whatever your purposes may be. And if you by them from the swedish company www.teknikmagasinet.se you'll get a 2 year warranty aswell (something I find extremely generous given that this is a low budget, beginners controller).

Cheaper than an X_Session Pro? If the buttons and controls are not too annoying to use and you can remap the MIDI, that's a really good deal for a beginner.

Anyone used it? If your experiences are positive, it will definitely go on my list of beginners gear.

I gigged my I-Mix Club for the first time a couple of months ago, although at the time could'nt get the wheels going (due to no .tsi's available and being a midiphobe) so we used the djm-600 for the actual mixing side of things. Now tho everything is all set up properly and i'm having a great time with it. My first choice for a controller would have been the Vestax i believe, but they are about 1K here gosh dang it, so at $500NZ not too bad. Just thought i'd share my own XP of them cheers guys

I asked ean about this, the guy who was recording was only there on the first day to shoot the gear - one the second day when Ean had his performance he wasnt there.

Hmm... I don't know. I saw him perform once, but no one was recording it. He did perform at least one other time.

If I were there, it'd be hard to miss me. I'm the tall dorky one that looks totally out of place.

I'm curious to see what you believe of the Hybrid 202? That was my favorite unit of theirs to play on. I've even changed some of my cue mappings to imitate the way it was set up.

Just came back from Cebit- where I wandered onto the DJ Tech-Stand and could give 2 of their controllers a little spin; the iMix Reloaded which was not so much fun, since their Mac had random cut-outs of the Audio, but the iMix-Club Edition seemed nice. Definitately not the quality of a VCI-100, but still not too bad. Never seen them here in a store, so cannot say if it's good value for the money.

Could be the size... I've heard it matters, but they're not much bigger than the VCI-100. Compare that to a vinyl record and you'd probably say there's no difference. I believe they probably are a bit more responsive and out of the box they have a texture that helps them stick a bit better to your fingers. They could still benefit from some Jog grips though for ultimate control.

Not really... the layout doesn't work like VCI-100SE. The form factor is similar to the VCI-100... but it's also somewhat of a cross between the VCI-100 and VCI-300.

Now if they added some arcade buttons I'd give it to you. ... what's the first manufacturer that will mass produce arcade style cue buttons? That's what I want to know.

how are the jog wheels for scratching on the Kontrol One? how do they compare to the vestax vci units?

i'm on the market for a midi controller that I can use to scratch tracks in Traktor, is this a good product for such a purpose?

also what is the price for the Kontrol One?
thanks

The controller above is the Hybrid 202. It's a really cool concept for controllers in general. The thing is sold all together with the case for $799 or each unit individually. I like the shift button that allows you to quickly store cues and loops and recall them. The pitch slider is nice and accurate as are the jog wheels.

The other thing that's really cool about the controller is that there is a knob on the upper left that allows you to direct the controller to point to up to four decks.
During the NAMM show there was a slight problem with the left touch platter on our demo unit, but thanks to that little knob I was able to point my right controller to control the left deck with just one knob turn. I can see how this could come in really handy on the road. I believe all controllers should have a knob like that!

The mixer is a digital mixer with on board effects so you can use effects directly from the unit rather than from within Traktor, Deckdance or whatever other software you use. It also has some tricky crossfader effects that can be activated with by switching a button in the center.

The only thing that I didn't like much was the color and I would like to see some arcade style buttons for cue points on some of these products in the future. I haven't see that anywhere really... but hopefully the rest of the world will catch up with Ean soon.

I saw Ean's demo of his arcade button's live. I have to say that was damn impressive. It made me want to rip out my VCI-100's buttons immediately and replace them like he did.
