Ok here's the story...

Ever since I bought my M-Audio Xponent a few years ago I

Bloody hell. And I thought I was wild when I bust out the spray paint.
LoL I get these crazy ideas every now and then

How do I sign up to all threads created by extraclassic? hehe

I didn't not signed to this yet...

Need to check it when I get home, pictures blocked here
Thanks my friend

How much of the original jog wheel are you using? Just the optical encoder?
Yes that's about it. I will probably cut some new ones with the cnc router when it

Thanks for the tip.

Did you build or buy your cnc router? It would be good to have someone to chat to if i get stuck at some point

to extra and death:

Thank you so much for keeping this conversation public, it will help (and entertain ) a lot of people.

The pics are great and your conversation is so above my head that I loved it

keep up with the good work guys!

Thanks for taking the time to explain things it's much appreciated.

Post the pics here no problem. It will be a great help for me and If it inspires someone else then it's all good.

Edit. you beat me to it Thanks again

Well, I guess I will post them here, and then I can delete this post later if you like. I hope this helps. I wanted to ask what type of wood did you use? Tempered MDO I hope.

No, underneath is the geared track that allows the Y axis. This was a great design in my opinion as the waste material does not clog the gears. I will take some pics later today and post them. Great to hear you are going to use CorelDraw. I have used that program since version 3. I use it to generate the vectors and then use ArtCam to generate the 'G' code, then Mach3 to run the machine. I'll post pics later, or I can PM them to you, so I don't hijack your thread with cnc router stuff.

Yeah some more pics would be good. Is there another aluminium angle with bearings below the top one to prevent lift?

I was planning on using corel draw for designing parts and then Cut2d to generate the g code then finally Mach 3.

Yes, they run on top of a aluminum 'v' rail that sits on top of the table, with a geared rod that runs below the table. I can take more pics if they would help you.

The trickiest part for me was the software. Do you know which direction you are leaning to as far as software? Both for the machine and what you will generate 'G' code with. I can help you there too if you need it.

Here is video of mine in action, cutting out one of the pairs of my dsc mod.

Looks awesome. I like how you have the machine sealed off and the viewing windows is a great idea.

Does your machine use v groove bearings running on some angle?
Adriana Bazzelle
29.07.2011
A little of both. I bought it put together, but in its original configuration it was not strong enough to cut aluminum, so I altered the hell out of it. Stronger stepper motors and different Z setup.

Torq. . . I was going to point that out myself, but the brains itself are from the Xponent.

maybe some of the lockup issues were due to so many more teeth before

Yeah the resolution does seem pretty good but I've got to see how far I can push it

Like I said in the OP I had nothing but trouble with the original Xponent wheels. On a few occasions they completely locked up on me which meant I had to take the unit to bits and get the hammer on them

The aluminium top is definitely an improvement on the originals performance wise plus them extra inches really do matter.

Another update for you and a video as promised.

I ran into a major hiccup toevening . The aluminium sheet that I bought for the top of the jog wheels was anodised and after much head scratching and a quick search on Google I now know that the surface of anodised aluminium is not conductive.

Until I get another sheet I have rubbed the surface down with some sandpaper which seems to have solved the problem.

I was pleasantly surprised at the response of the jog wheel considering the spacing on the encoder Disc. When the acetate sheet arrives I will be doing some fine tuning.

nice work ! I hurry to see more, it's a great concept!
you are a true stud in the digital world. this is similar to my dream controller.
Thanks guys.

Here are a few more images of my progress.

Encoder wheel fitted for testing purposes. I'm still waiting for the acetate sheet to arrive so until then....

I sandwiched the paper encoder wheel in between two pieces of plastic from a DVD spindle.

Here is the wire that makes the platter touch sensitive.

This box that the jog wheel is mounted in is just for testing I will post a video soon after I have got things mapped and tested.

I'm believeing about putting some sort of artwork in the center of the jog wheel to break up all that aluminium. What do you believe?
