Gamepad to controller
Posted on: 08.08.2012 by Kenya Bridgers
Hey guys! so im on a quest to make my own controller with pots for my vinyl. I've bought two twin usb controller basically 4 controllers with only two usbs. Which leaves me with am minimum of 16 pots and 48 buttons. two of those pots will be volume faders for my vinyl and one as a crossfader. My vinyl is currently running through serato into my hercules 4-mx as a soundcard. the idea being my controller will act as deck 3-4 and my vinyl as 1-2 through using my gamepad controller as the mixer through midi messages. some of the pots will end up (approximately 8) will be the eq knobs leaving 5 knobs left over for mapping. My problem at the moment is im running a 64 bit sytem and tried using glovepie but i tried installing ppjoy on to my computer (before) putting it in test mode. Once in test mode i uninstalled it and re installed it but it didn't work. I noticed it skipped downloading a bunch of the ppjoy files (even though i was in test mode) Can anyone help? Is there any other programs that are better I've been doing research but it seems midi yoke downloaded wrong into my computer and rejoice is only for 32 bit version. I could setup the buttons to do keystrokes but that doesn't do anything for my pots which is what im interested in as i really want the extra mixer. for some more info on the ppjoy problem it opens up fine but once you try to add a controller it doesnt let you pick a parrallel port or anything only lets you choose the controller and theres four more options above this one but i cant access them.

but its your mixer, not mine I like the idea of the mpc pads!!!

I wrote it in an other topic. I ordered a fader from a a&h xone22 (about 25

in x-direction: middle between turntables - yes
in y-direction: figure out what you like. I would put it at the bottom of the mixer. But as you described, your hands are more in the middle of the mixer. maybe try it by putting your mixer around and put a box on the bottom to simulate there is something else you just need some space on your desk
what do you use for programming? i am confused. i thought you take a gamepad/other controller and rewire it.

left and right to your mixer section more buttons. thats it what you are talking about? sounds to me like taking a mixer and putting a kontrol f1 left and right. i dont know. do you need that much buttons? what about the distance to your turntables?

alright so i was believeing id love to have like 16 knobs one per button for my new korg padkontrol which i must say is very nice i hooked it up on to virtual dj and set up the 12 samplers available and had a fun little drum/disco hit set lol i was believeing a knob each would be a nice addition i could use it to scroll through each drums bank/ set up a button each to flip it to the samplers loop function or volume. one problem im having with the korg padkontrol is it seems to be playing the third button down on the first row when im layin down the beats to hard i believeing this probably isnt just going to magically disappear should i take it apart eventually add my knob idea somehow (maybe mod my novation remote sl 37 to have all knobs instead of keys) I kind like this idea it would be a cheap option and i could just get a 25 key piano from online like the akai. or maybe use the akai as the extra knobs since its cheaper with crappier keys? Im also picking up a blackberry playbook tomorrow im believeing about using splashtop on it then connecting it to be used with virtual dj on my windows 7 comp. im believeing it'd be a nice little screen for virtual dj as well as its touch screen might be a nice adaption to my mixer im tihnking maybe i add a piece to my mixer that would hold the touch screen on an angle for me kind of like one of those keyboards you can get for some tablets that make it look like a mini computer (minus the keyboard (just the clips screwed down to the surface of my mixer)) also my korg padkontrol (unless modded with the knobs idea) will most likely just have an area in my midi mixer to slide into as i dont want to limit its movement.

I watched guy on youtube has to add some connections on board to make pots work, but his controller was board with analogs all in one peace, and I couldn't get anything because my board comes in buttons part and cable for analogs with two buttons on other side. I'll look for that video, maybe it can be more useful to you.

ok so my issue is:
im using 4 gamepads which are split into pairs to limit the usb connections.
the issue is three of them are needed to make the mixer i want ( i need the pots/knobs for eqs volumes crossfader and pitch)
This means i need to put atleast three of the controllers into one box
(ran into another problem zestoi said that soem of the pots share the same layout so they cant be turned at the same time as its sister analog stick)
this is changing my ideas because now i have to scatter the pots on each controller to allow for multiple eqs knobs to be turned at once
(sister and brother analogs sharing the same controller cant have the pots move at the same time)
now im believeing i might have to drop the effects machine i was going to add to have more pots to dilute the issue of not being able to turn more than one pot (if they share the same controller)
so now im left with a mixer that would have 16 pots of which i would have to seperate and memerize as to not use the wrong ones at the wrong time.
This almost makes it seem like a waste of time...
then i have 48 buttons as well which seems like a little much i might still try to make this mixer and if i find that the knobs are hard to work with maybe ill just upgrade to a better board. but for now im rocking the korg padkontrol so i just need to get it to work with virtual dj (*virtual dj is my program i use STEREO*)

well im looking at adding an akai mpd 16 or something similar to it, to my mixer so ive been checking around on craigslist im not sure what i want to do for my next project my mixer is defiently going to push my setup forward quite a bit. adding buttons to my turntables might be a cool idea but could alter how well they work so that might be a no no.

Zestoi is resource indeed, he can be of great help on your project for sure For modding your remote, that is much better and simpler solution then running converter for gamepads, ofc if your pads can send in 127 ticks. It is a lot of knobs man are you believeing of total reconstruction of sketch or making other controller then this one?

I saw nice board, believeing to get one and dig a bit into that problematics and mode my hidfighter and BCD3000 by linking them together. This way I could add more knobs to bcd and make LED's to all buttons.

nope! I'm definetly struggling with it as I have a limited backround on it but zestoi has been a super great help thanks to him im learning something new everyday he replies back and i get a few more steps ahead. I've been looking at my novation remote sl 37 and i was wondering could i modify my piano keys to possibly be knobs? there touch sensitive and provide a louder sound the more strength you put into pushing it. That must mean its reading it on some sort of a scale between 0-127 you'd believe. What i was tihnking was remove the keys and get 37 more knobs which i could use instead of piano keys because in production i could map all my buttons to be a piano key anyway or could buy a smaller piano like one of those mini akais which has 20 something keys with some knobs and drum pads for production. In the end maybe its just a better idea to make a hid board with 32 knobs and 16 buttons or whatever the board offered.

I believe you should be able to connect pads, no worries. As those pads are velocity sensitive they will send note (digital) and CC (analog) signals. In theory you can link gamepad analogs to control it with pad velocity. You can trigger hotcue+FX and then modulate effect from velocity to create some mapping tricks. I'm more about Traktor mappings, also relatively new to DIY controllers. Do you got sending HID to MIDI?

lol sorry didnt know it was steve! but no i havent tested the crossfaders on a gamepad but i figure if it doesnt work as well as i though ill buy a cheapier one to replace it with and save the expensive one to use on an actual hid board btw im totally new to this all so all my ideas are completely untested. I'm reallly hoping i can use the mpc pads like planned there are possibly my favourite part of this idea as it would see the mpc pads collabing with a mixer made for freestyle scratching.

Nice. If you keep mixer in size of your sketch it will not be that big as I though in first place. Idea of setting tempo fader is cool too, I was believeing to mount it on front panel to pop up but there will probably be no room for all. If I'm right on that I'll leave that analog free.

I got questions about crossfader. Have you tested faders on gamepad before and do you believe gamepad can be fast enough to support fader with better performances?

And yes, Steve wasn't already available so I go for Stewe anyway

Those switches are compact size and I don't believe there will be a lot of room back there since hub will be there also and want to keep it 40mm in height same as my other controller. I could move hub somewhere else but then will lose current mixer layout. As for LEDs I was saying that it was issue probably with my gamepad, you should definitely try it out sometimes on your system. It has to be connected in way that when button is pressed your LED got ground signal i believe. I got pic somewhere.

Here is original idea for mixer+transport controller and my IG hid-fighter.

to be honest i believe the toggle switches look cheap i prefer the idea of just coding in a kill switch and i don't know what ill do with the leds if they arent reliable when soldered in. wasnt there a soldering technique people have been sharing on these community s that have info on it? for the four deck mapping how do you change from template to template? i believe arcade buttons or touch sensitive buttons would be a better kill looking kill switch then a toggle switch but when integrated properly things that look tacky can be fine. I can do a sketch of my box design if you'd like but its going to be the design i want and not the design ill end up with as id like a sleak sexy looking mixer but will probably end up buying a random worse looking box form the flea market. I'm almost believeing about dropping all my arcade buttons in my mixer and replacing them with touch sensitive ones as it'd make it look a lot sexier to people new to the idea of making your own midi controller. i believe touch sensitive things just blow peoples minds.

I was believeing of maybe adding one adapter input only for LEDs. I can pick 5v from usb and make LEDs to lite in hold mode but it turn not to be reliable after some time. Thought to install some bright white LEDs into arcade buttons and give it supply from wall instead to see will it resolve the issue.

It's four deck mapping for mixer. Also got some switches for modifiers. EQs and volume a/c - b/d, but didn't wanted to make some thoughts for further mapping to it. Jet

was believeing of doing leds yes i was believeing that the arcade buttons that light up would be cool since you can get different coloured leds for them but that way might be to expensive. Also I'm using virtual dj so all my mappign gets done in there after words. I can rout one button to be a toggle between two different settings. I'm also believeing about making my extra knob on my mixer a single pitch slider with a button to toggle which deck gets the pitch. I've finished drawing my mixer and am now just doing a sketch of my fx sampler.

It's like classic midifighter upgraded with firmware that send multiple midi CC and notes to knob making it super knob. Midifighter also has additional 4 buttons and 4 knobs inputs which you can see on mfPro. With classic mf I could send midi from those analog outputs into gamepad controller to control knobs or to leave it HID and make some bigger box to set all controls in one unit with link from mf.

12 buttons, 4 knobs - gamepad
4 buttons (no LED), 4 knobs - from midifighter

Have any plans to mount any LEDs?

who's MFpro? I was gunna do my research into that after i figured out my controllers why not get two twin usb controllers? then you could rock the hu inside the box with more out puts thats what im doing currently. three of them in one unit the fourth as a spare effects knob.

I wanted to make two channel mixer out of gamepads myself. Was believeing to use three gamepads since there would be three band EQs and filter/gain per channel and ofc volume sliders and crossfader. Idea was to install USB-hub into box but in the way that I could set fourth USB input to be placed on back panel of unit so I could plug in my HIDfighter from there. I got sketch for it somewhere on cds, will post it when I found... Have you believeing to buy same pots as MFpro use? I would really like to mount Chroma caps to my controller when finished and that way could be sure caps can fit on.
