People talking to you when you're mixing.

Okay. So played out at my first house party the other evening . Lugged my 1200's, Serato, Computer... all that jazz and blasted a 5pm-1am set out (house/dubstep/dnb/breaks all over the place honestly, but worked it well). My good buddy got there around 9pm and hooked up his SCS w/ Traktor and we went back and forth for the rest of the evening.

Something I've never realized before, and have been TERRIBLE about doing to my friends?

Talking to people when mixing.

Dude, fucking hell. Props to everyone who deals with that shit. Was my first time ever having to deal with that. I've honestly just mixed at home, or with friends in their homes up to this point.

Shit is difficult. More difficult that I thought.

Probably the biggest lesson learned of the evening . Conversations in the middle of mixing is terrible for all parties involved.

Also a smattering of smaller evening s that can be a bit all over the place musically, but on ocassion they drop some good stuff (and on ocassion some really bad stuff, I was at this one evening where they played something that sounded like Gabber and called it "deathstep" -,- ).

Need to break that one out again.

At least at the club I am to spin at we have a bouncer by the dj booth... so all we have to concentrate on is mixing, song selection, reading and interacting with the crowd :P

My pet hate is someone comes into the booth trying to talk to you, you tell them to hang on whilst riding the pitch fader on the cdj mid beat match and then they knock you pushing the pitch fader out again!!! :@ I have found the best tactic is to have headphones on fully and pretend you can hear them . .

Had a mate of mine come up when I was cueing in another track at a party, completely threw me off by asking me for a song and grabbing me by the neck all jolly, when I had said wait a minute

He didnt understand either what was involved when I explained it to him, so annoying.

Notepad and pen next time!

The only shit that's REALLY bad for me is at house parties when people are completely incoherently drunk and there's no security to get them the fuck out, everything else is annoying but manageable.

This.

I was at a Dubstep evening yesterday (which was fuckin awesome, spent 3 hours non-stop in front of a Funktion One system), and this bloke kept typing out requests to the DJ, who was playing vinyl and a lot of acetate Dubplates. The DJ just shook his head and smiled...

So not true. When I play at home, my wife dresses up in different outfits and dances for me, this, inevitably leads to the "tramp in the booth" scenario, where I get to practice under conditions that would "break my concentration". Just sayin'

This can be a really hard one, but you just have to deal with it... I've taken to laughing in peoples faces (girls included) if they ask for David Guetta or some such wank.

I really feel bad because most of the time I'm talking to some really interesting people (mostly other DJs) and I'm really enjoying the conversation but then a quick glance at the laptop screen or a specific part of the track says it's time to mix out and then I start mixing and the person I was talking to leaves and sometimes they never come back. Sad isn't it ?

But on the other hand I can also really appreciate it that they leave me the fuck alone behind the decks.

This. I know 2 friends in the whole world who can properly communicate with me while I'm mixing without interrupting my flow, but at home I practice by mixing and playing pool against my mates at the same time to make myself hurry

you have got to deal with that. Being a club Dj people want to high five, tell you how awesome you are, how much you suck, what they want to hear. Promoters are coming to talk to you, owners, photographers in the booth shooting photos, friends who came to see you. So the 5 mins you have to mix a track in properly and find a new track disappears really really fast.

Have a wife and kid I'm used to mixing while multi tasking. Plus years ago would spin with friends be 4 or 5 drinking taking turns dropping records. Think comes with experience and if naturally can multi task will make easier

Haha I just recently ran into this problem too, somebody really wanted to hear "everyday I'm shuffling" or one of those LMFAO songs...and completely missed my cue for the next song, kinda made it work but the first song literally faded naturally to a new vocal haha.

I got pretty lucky by just smashing play and making it sound like it was on purpose.

If I'm in the middle of a transition, I just tell them to hold on one moment. They usually get it when if I'm heavily involved in the mixer. If they get mad, they usually just don't understand. So as soon as you're done, apologize and explain what you were doing.

I'm terrible at multi-tasking, but some of my friends are pretty good at mixing and talking/taking requests at the same time. My friends, who dnt DJ, believe that being a DJ means you can get a lot more ass. They dnt realize you dnt have time to talk, let alone spit proper game. I get way more vagina just going to the club vs. DJ'n at the club.
