Recommend me some Dubstep.
Posted on: 11.11.2008 by kieran frearson
I have been asked to make a mix for a friend with dubstep, and frankly, I do not know where to begin, since its not really my style of music. I LIKE it, and I have some stuff, but not that much.

Its not my world so to say. I would like to get some more though, and I would like to make this mix for my dear friend (Its for his housewarming party in 2 months). I told him he can download some of the internet (there are plenty of mixes available online) but he just wants ME to make a mix haha Stubborn fuck! (Well, I do feel flattered!)

So, could you people that are into the Dubstep recommend me some Dubstep? I dont mind if its dark or light, as long as it grooves!

Thank you very much in advance!

(In return, I will post the mix here, if its worth anything lol)

Kind regards,

Nemo

i'm waiting for the situation where the latter seems like a plausible outcome

Truuuuttth. One of my favorite songs since I found it a few months back.

Basement Jaxx - Raindrops (Doorly's Dubstep Remix) is a FAT track imo. And I don't care if it's "radio-friendly" dubstep or whatever. Why do people obsess over dubstep being completely unlikeable by many?

I get what you mean, tho very much depends which tunes. Breakage, Kode9 & Headhunter have some fucking huge tunes which I have played to dancefloors no worries. Tho again depends on your Dfloor, if they expecting dub/roots heavy riddims to skank to or Electro/Pop step bangers.

And many are most definately Phat enough. The bassweight on some of Kodes tunes are beyond anything else on a rig.

On a new note. Akira Kiteshi - Pinball . FUCK YEAH! Big tune.

Eeewwwwwwww breaks.

If your finding it boring your obviously not listening to a wide array of dubstep.
+ Heavy bass for the win! Old Kode9 / Mala stuff where its pretty much all bassline with some gated/reverbed snares ftw.

Like I said before argonrecords.com(then click Argon) if you havent been there your asleep on the scene a US Dub-step label, still printing to vinyl still selling out its records, still playing dubs way before they are released.

This comment made me laugh so much as now Dubstep in england gets played on prime time radio on even the biggest stations. Its a mixed blessing though as when im playing at partys i get bugged constantly by girls asking for FUCKING LA ROUX IN FOR THE KILL SKREAM REMIX god i hate that tune now. But also it means theres more money in it and more people like it and want me to play dubstep instead of getting complaints like 2 years ago.

it's sad to see a genre die out or become played out in certain areas. i guess the UK did get hit pretty hard with it after rusko and caspa and them all blew it up? but over here it's like "dubwhat?" to a lot of people which is good since i don't know if i could take it if it died out right now.
Just wobble that got too thrashed, like fidget theres not much depth to it and theres only so far you can take it. The deeper & progressive stuff is still going haaaard. So much freshness right now.

In England the general feeling is were all fucking sick to death of wobble (well most people i know) what kind of stuff do you hear on your end?
LOL - You say were behind and yet u post Gully Brooke Lane ? Tis all about the ReUp/Anaconda + Next Hype mashup... Well it was about 1-2 months ago anyway. I'm New Zealand based btw.

Router + You & I is a sic plate. I love all of the hessle audio stuff. Applepips, Hyperdub, hotflush all bring it as well. Really love the heavy UKFunky/Dubstep/2Step vibes. Heaps of fresh shit coming out right now. I personally dont like wobble much. Well over it. Even the good dark stuff (Excision/Datsik/Hench etc). I play wobble during peak times, but try and drop in some more percussion & low-sub based tunes.

A tune I posted earlier Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo is epic. Untold - Just For You is siiic (roska Remix) as well as the Roska - Kicks & Snares EP are fucking AMAZING! Anything Ramadanman also.

On current stuff, I'm all about the Hyperdub 5 year CD [as I posted earlier], but also a bunch of the newish plates by Geiom - Cave Rave is massive.

Space Cadet / Junkyard just release on tectonic by Cyrus is mad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqUI4C9txC0

This plate here is PURE HEAT on wax! Deep tune.
Kryptic Minds - 768 / Pinch & Moving Ninja - False Flag [Kryptic Minds RMX]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K0ZqO1HT9c

Truth - The Fatman - not new but a BIIIIG tune on Deep Medi. One of my staples on wax. Very much in the vein of Mala - Anti-war Dub. Truth are NZ based guys, choice dudes as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8oegZFfcw4

Also P-Vans - Wasps out on Aquatic Labs (check his myspace: http://www.myspace.com/pvans) - Welly NZ based, fkn choice dude as well.

Heaps more hot [mostly non-wobble] stuff, too much to post, so I usually just do bits. In terms of more new HYPE stuff Theres all the Trolly Snatcha / Doctor P / Downlink stuff coming out as well. Some of it is really good Jump-Up Dubstep that makes parties go nuts. DrP - Rasputins gold, DrP & Flux Pavillion - StinkFinger, Downlink - Gama Ray Burst. All Dubs atm, but fuck they wreck a dancefloor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bocPppATns&fmt=18

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMcyGLqm0N8

Emalkay - When I look at You / Angie Got Stoned... tho "WILAY" has been rinsed for months in the UK now very few ppl in NZ have had it til now tho I prefer the flip personally its a bad boy tune.

Redlight (aka Clipz) - Lobster Boy EP is wrcking things right now. Out on PROMO afaik.

Amen to that. You can't really play any of that deep stuff and except to keep the dance floor packed.
