Any DJTT S4's already arrive?
Posted on: 05.11.2010 by Julissa Serrone
Folks who supported the home team.......I got mine on the way and am wondering if the DJTT ones started hitting some front doors yet. How was the video?

Also I saw on the NI community a few guys that had issues with the jogs. Wondering if this is "batch" specific and if we'll see any sent from DJTT with hardware issues.

^ This.

I recalibrated with TSP too.

Ok, so lets hear about the DVD? Can I skip the freakin manual and just watch the DVD?

Even Serato Dj's have to Recalibrate before playing... Dunno why it's such a big deal to you... If it is, maybe you should consider going back to pure vinyl, 'cause with the computers you'll always have to stare at your laptop for more than 30 seconds...

How's the DVD man?

I'm wondering if i will still get the dvd if i didn't pre-order the S4 from DJTT but buy one later..

Back on topic... My S4, pre-ordered from DJTT, arrived this past Thursday and it's been consuming my entire weekend (in a good way) - I love it. No problems with shipping or physical damage. No jog wheel issues. Just installed, updated, calibrated and was off n' running.

I was planning to map my VCI-100 to decks C/D with a similar layout to the SE fader and jog efx. However, the sample decks and loop recorder open up so many creative possibilities I'm not sure I want a second controller. (yet anyway)

I've studied marketing a little bit, and what you're seeing here is a backlash to the enormous hype NI generated over this product. Hype is a risky way to market products, it creates fanboys and haters. (Look at Apple) If you keep trying to do the hype thing (Iphone 4) people actually resent it a little. Look how the antenna issue completely blew up in Apple and AT&T's face, when it only affected a small percentage of people. Bottom line, products never live up to the hype, which really upsets people that bought into it.

On a more personal note, when the marketing campaign for the S4 kicked off with the "leaked video" (that was probably shot by a professional team), I just thought to myself "I'm not gonna buy whatever that is." Why? The hype. Any company that markets with viral videos and leaked specs doesn't get my money. I want things set in concrete, release dates, feature lists, etc. This wink-wink "It's awesome, but I can't tell you about it" is complete bullshit. My next controller is gonna be Denon.

@Play

Chill out dude, mine came 100% working.

And to be honest it's:
Install software
Reboot
Download update
Install update
Reboot
Start software
Plug
Recalibrate
Play

I didn't even have to recalibrate, but in the entire process of getting the thing ready you hardly even notice it. I did it anyway, just to be sure.

Also, as mentioned before, any first gen product has bugs. Look at Microsoft and Apple products, and they have a hell of a lot more beta testers than NI.

PRESSPL>Y - This is pretty ignorant. Not alot of hardware comes TRULY ready out of the box. On macs you have to install the OS to get them working, no big deal. Many midi controllers you have to install mappings, software for mapping, no big deal. When the S4 only requires as you put it "staring at my laptop for 30 seconds", Once. I would say that its pretty much plug and play. Even turntables need calibrating once.

Just deal with it, its not hard, it doesnt take alot of time - and despite of this thing, the advantage of a S4 MORE THAN GREATLY make up for things.

Don't just bitch about this LITTLE thing when the controller could've had a pricepoint as steep as some A&H products and STILL be worth it. If you dont like it, send it back to the developers and go back to a full analog setup - then you dont need any calibration, except if you go back to TTs - Ohh shit.

You cannot expect the Kontroller to be plug n play when it has to be calibrated. You even have to calibrate the EQ knobs and faders. This just tell you that its no ordinary controller.

I bet people have a lot more issues with other devices as they are not purpose built.

It takes 10 minutes not an hour.

I don't mean to ruffle any feathers here Karlos, but you've been extremely defensive to this concern in almost all of your responses here.

I believe whether or not you believe re-calibrating is a big deal or not is your opinion alone, and certainly not fact. The true fact here is that it is an issue issue for some. I also believe it would be impossible to judge at this point how many of the S4 users will believe is a "big deal" and how many will believe its not. Maybe most people won't care, I don't know, but I had a chat with about 5 different local DJs in Toronto last evening @ a Ricardo Villalobos show about this exact issue with the S4, and they all had the same reaction: WTF.

That's coming from DJ's who do the same thing as me and have the same needs with their S4. We show up to the club, play beats, and go home. In between all of that, we like to party and enjoy ourselves, and not worry about re-calibrating a piece of gear. If I show up to a show, and have literately no time between getting then and switching over, I don't need to be standing there staring at my laptop for 30 seconds. It's not a good look.

And here's where I really don't mean to ruffle any feathers, but I just feel the need to say. From what I gather, you are somewhat of an authority or expert in Traktor and Native Instruments products. You may even work for NI. When customers, either current loyal ones, or ones like myself who haven't touched Traktor yet and are waiting for their S4 for their first go, have complaints and concerns, it's less than comforting to answer our concerns with "Dude, live with it, it's no big deal (for me at least)".

And just so we're clear, none of the videos and information released about the S4 that created all the hype and caused many of us including myself to pre-order a unit said THE NEW TRAKTOR S4. It's as simple as Plug, RECALIBRATE, and Play. I don't believe that was what I signed up for when I happily gave my down payment.

I never suggested calibrating would take an hour-i was just saying that, in my case at least, concern re: the calibrating is likely borne out of/increased by anxiety of the wait. Still very excited for it to arrive (in other words, if it were to arrive 2day I wouldn't care about calibrating at all) Now we're way OT. Sorry for contrib to that.

Well i have got My DJTT supplied S4... The outer box took a bit of a beating but the contents are fine.. watched some of the Ean Golden tutorial DVD (which is really well presented and very informative) while i waited for the 1.01 update to download.

Had to give the left jog wheel a twist and click but otherwise all ok.....now off for a bit of a tear up.

Mine shipped out from djtt Monday and is sitting in:

HODGKINS, IL, US 11/05/2010 5:30 P.M. ARRIVAL SCAN

Which is just 290 miles from me according to Google. However, my new arrival date is Tuesday the 9th. So close and yet so far... Go figure.

Let's see I can spend 30 seconds calibrating my jogs or three weeks coming up with a mapping that's still not as good as what the S4 has out of the box. Sounds plug and play to me.

Calibrating.

Big deal. An NS7 also requires calibrating and most of the turntable DJ's that have hoped on one, love their NS7's. I've never heard of anyone that complains about calibrating an NS7 and it's still refered to as a plug and play system.

To me out of the box plug and play means you take it out of the box, plug and play. I do have plenty of gear (mixers, dual cd players) that fit that bill. In any event, I'm sure, in my case at least, its mainly the anticipation of the arrival of the S4. waiting sucks! If i knew it was showing up tomorrow, i prob wouldnt care if i had to calibrate for an hour.
nayit ruiz jaramillo
06.11.2010
Well it depends on what Out Of The Box means for you.
When you get the S4 out of the box you HAVE to update the S4 software and recalibrate.
Theres no option because the 1.0.1 software depends on it.

It takes 10 minutes to do all that.

Thats pretty much out of the box imho.

The Jog wheel issue is a one time fix.

Recalibrating is something that all S4s will have to do. Its simply a part of the deal.
It takes a few minutes.

I just dont get the fuss. The Jogs are new tech, they arent like the VCI jogs in anyway.
They need setting up and recalibrating like any technical piece of DJ kit.

trust me this isnt an issue dude.

That's a little disappointing, considering out-of-the-box plug + play functionality was one of the biggest selling points of the KS4. Don't get me wrong, I am patiently waiting for mine to arrive as well. I hope the fix is as simple as all that. It (jog wheel issue) really does sound like you will have to recalibrate quite often, just to be safe.

I wonder, since they seem to be going out in batches, if later batches (like mine apparently is) will have this/these problems already addressed.

I didn't want to believe it at first, but UPS Ground most likely means that our S4s are in the back of some truck that someone is driving cross-country.

P.S. Dubai beach party looks like a fantasy. Either you drop $$ on a sick vacation or DJ gear.

I have had similar stuff sent using DHL/UPS and it takes around 5/7 working days to get to the Middle east from the USA, but it depends on what service has been used (expedited/express etc) and the route it has to take to get to you.

I would say you would get by Tuesday at the latest if it was dispatched on Monday the 1st November.

When I opened my S4 the top of the left jog wheel was actually off, and just rattling around in the box thankfully I knew not to panic having read Karlos' reply to jog wheel issue posts several times before, and all it took was clicking it into place and turning

I decided to cancel my pre-order with DJTT as I'm in the UK, and with not only the delays, but also the hassle of paying customs, I was lucky enough to get one here with free overevening shipping and have been playing since noon

Holy Frig.

My S4 didn't come. For the people that ordered from DJTT, we were probably the first people know know about the S4, and I for one signed up for the S4 pre-pre-order the day it was available.

It's kind of BS that we have to sit here and watch everybody else enjoy their S4's for more than a full week before we get our.

If so many people had their units shipped prior to Nov 1st in anticipation of reception on the 1st, why couldn't we?

Karlos, as somewhat of an expert on Traktor as well as controller hardware, you must not have been quite as panic'd as most people encountering problems. Do you not agree that considering the biggest selling point of this unit is plug-and-play and build quality as a close second (as well as all the other new features being a close second), that the S4 is becoming a boarderline fail? I'm saying this from the standpoint of a user who doesn't like to loose hair over problemshooting, and disslikes tweaking hardware. When I bought CDJ's, they didn't require any recalibration. They didn't require that I pull off the jog and snap () anything back in. This kind of freaks me out to be honest.

Back on topic: I fully support DJTT's, and that's why I try and buy my gear from them even though it costs me more with shipping and takes much longer to get to my door (I have learned over several purchases). But the fact is, DJTT does cost more and/or it takes much longer to arrive. Simply put, you need to up the competitive anti because little things like this are going to sway your customers away. Maybe be champions of fast shipping? I know it's an extra cost, but one that will make customers happy, and keep customers from potentially leaving.

Recalibrating isnt needed before every gig. Only if you feel you have knocked the S4.

To be honest i have knocked mine (lightly) getting it in an out of the car and its been fine.
Doesnt take long to recal. Just do it when your getting your set together as part of your pre-gig routine.

Gone a bit OT here.
Lorita Leazenby
05.11.2010
It's like DVS, you have to calibrate it before every gig too.

Also, on the point of not everybody having a community to find solutions to problems. I believe everybody who bought an S4 has the ability to go to the NI website, and contact customer service. I'm pretty sure they will have a template of an e-mail which explains what Karlos just explained. Nothing's perfect.
