Nanotrak DIY midicontroller tutorial

Hello people,

I'm new of this community but I visit this fantastic web site almost everyday.

I want to public a small tutorial on how I built my DIY controller for Traktor PRO.
I started like a totaly newbie in October and I just finished in the half of may. It cost me around 600-700 euro due to many errors I made and to the shipping costs.
Everything was made thanks to www.ucapps.de and their excellent community . The controller is base on MIDIBOX64E,
it has 64 button, 40 potentiometer, 16 Encoders, 48 leds, 1 lcd.

The component and supplier are:
- pre-built PCB (1 CORE, 1 PCB CORE, 2 DOUTX4, 4 DINX4, 2 AINX4) from http://www.mikes-elektronikseite.de/midiseite.htm64
- Hammond enclosure from farnell 1414945
- The panel designed and ordered with front panel designer it costs me 112euro at www.schaeffer-ag.de
- The push button are from farnell 1132902 with green led, red led and no led
- The player pushbutton from suzo-happ
- the caps for button are from farnell 1132893 and 1132951
- The ALPS slider Potentiometer from farnell 1191712
- The ALPS rotary pot are from Digikey P3T9103-ND
- The ALPS encoders from Mouser 688-EC12E2420801 (I don't like them so much)
- The jog wheel are ALPS SRGP from farnell 1520823
- The knobs are farnell 892129 (slider) and neutrik rean from Mouser 550-77301
- The LCD from mouser 763-0216K1Z-NSW-BBW

Once I finished the structure I uploaded the last MIOS mios_update_v1_9f.zip using MIDI-OX, this is the Operative system.
After that I uploaded with MIOS-studio the midibox64 application from midibox64e_v2_2b.zip download section of ucapps.
I don't know anything about programming, the only code I need to change was for the encoder to change to detent mode.
Using sarge editor for MIDIBOX64E I assigned commads or note to every component and I connect DOUT (led) to MIDIEVENT to let Traktor send output signal and light the leds.
Now It's time to program the midimap with traktor pro but or this I believe I will take a lot of time since I will be accustomed to the new controller.
Now starts the satisfaction satisfaction satisfaction
Bye

man im baffled by this diy mod stuff... i have spent weeks trying to get my head round it but i believe i need to have an initial clue before you can begin to understand what people are talking about =[

helps much appreciated people!
I know its off topic what exactly don't you get about midibox? I've been researching it lately. And will try to clear things up for you.

If its your first introduction to custom midi controllers you would be better off to start hacking a game pad.

Thinking of buying one of these myself.

or else going with a midibox.

Anyway back on topic great job on the controller Nanotrak. How long did it take for your Midibox PCB's to arrive??

he can't sell it unless TK(midibox creator) gives him permission to. Its an open source and diy community so it would defeat the purpose of it. Its fairly easy to build your own though. I bet you can create one almost like the 3d or 4d for a fraction of the cost.

I really like their feel, and the output is smooth, not jumpy at all.

A personal recommendation. That's invaluable, thank you.

Hi, thanks for your replies, dont worry im not going to drill them myself

I just design holes in the middle of the parts. Alla the buttons where soldered on a testboard, and then I drilled the testboard and used spacer to attach to the panel.

The button needs only 7 mm hole the cap il 16mm only in the part behind the panel. If you read all post in this thread you can find the links for the panel. There is a company that makes the panel, i suggest to don't believe to cut by your self the panel if you want something that look good.

In fact, after looking at your FPD file the drill holes are only 7mm, which is perfect for what I want. Do the 16mm caps only need 7mm holes drilled then?

Also, how do you go about making the metal rails to hold your buttons/pots to the back of the panel? i have no idea where to start....

Cheers. I hope you are getting lots of use out of it!

hi,
really love your project. Im interested in the clear push button caps you used, on your device they look quite small, but the part you linked to is 16mm caps. 16mm should be the same width as your pots, but the pots look bigger.

Is the 16mm the actual size of the bit that pokes through the panel? I cant seem to see any 10mm ones - thats more the size i was looking for.

Many thanks

there is some errors on it that I had to solved once I recived it like the hole for the jogs it is completely wrong. Also the 4 encoders near the jog are too close to each other.

Good one. I've been tempted to build a Midibox for ages but i'm just too much of a spazz to get it together.

What's the deal with the front panel - does it come with the holes pre-cut or did you have to drill them yourself?

that is one of the best control surfaces that i have seen in a long time...thank you also for the build list...working on 1 myself now with all alloy buttons and knobs...will post pics as soon as all the gear arrives

I used flat multicables with single line header to easly connect to pcb. I prefer to don't implement the sound card to keep safe the quality of sound.

Dude, that's massive! I especially like your choice of wiring with the multicables. Is your soundcard embedded in the box?
