Reloop Contour?
Posted on: 30.10.2011 by Fatimah Czuprynski
Have read some reviews about it but not many feedbacks from normal users to this reloop controller. Also could not find any good video of this unit.

I mean it seams like the perfect controller for me. With the interface edition i could use the club mixer and i just had to bring my laptop, my reloop contour and my lauchpad into the club. A professional, not that expensive setup.

do you have the controller? what do you say about it?

I just got one of these yesterday. I can tell you it is build super solid and has lots of controls. Granted I have only been playing with it for a couple of days, but I would be glad to give you a quick(ish) review.

Here Is The Good...
You can control 4 decks with one controller.
The jog wheel is super responsive and the buttons are solid and have a nice clicky feel. The knobs have a nice grippy surface that are easy to tweak. The effect section can be controlled by either the top 4 rows of knobs or the top 4 faders. so your more flexible in creating different types of tweaks.
The "shift" button is internal and not in the software so it creates a different note when combined with which ever button or knob you are using. So mapping is a bit easier as far as not having to mess with modifiers that much.

Ok Now For The Bad...
No 4 Deck Mapping for Traktor Pro 2.0!
The only 4 Deck mapping from Reloop is for Traktor Pro 1.0. Had to make my own mapping for 4 Decks for Traktor Pro 2.1. Default mapping from Reloop is only for when running the unit in default midi Ch 1-4. Which conflicts with my S2 and Midi Fighter. So if you have this issue you would have to make your own mapping to work with what ever channels you change it to. (I'm using midi Ch 13-16 and I'm finishing up a mapping for 4 Decks to solve all these issues.)
The way the effects are set up is as followed.
When on Deck A you control FX 1, and when on Deck B you control FX 2 and so on. So you have to switch deck control to get to other effects. The encoder knobs are very slow transitions, so fast effects tweaks with them aren't easy. The FX Faders are short throw so accurate tweaks are difficult. (Good thing you have both faders and knobs)
Chances are you will have to do a firmware update the second you open the box to get it to work correctly with Traktor 2.0. (It easy enough to do, but you have to go to the community just to find this out.)

Side Note... Personal Issues... Things for me to fix
The default mapping has it set up so when the jog wheel in not in a mode it controls the volume on a track. I personally didn't like this. It would be to easy to bump the wheel and effect the volume on your track. (I'm disabling it from my mapping)
The default mapping for Traktor Pro 2.1 is 2 Decks and 2 Sample Decks. (This is fine if you run Traktor this way, but I prefer 4 Decks and use cue sampling. I will fix this in my mapping as well)
The "Loop In" and "Loop Out" are a Shift modifier. Where "Beat Loop" and "Reloop" are the main buttons. These should be reversed.
(Again will fix in my mapping)

All in all this is a great little controller that I feel has been over looked because it was way over priced when it came out, But with the recent price drops it a real deal. Once I finish up the mapping for it I will post it.

Hope that helps

Thanks. I just didn't know of any singular modular unit that had all the I/O interface options that the Contour has for an analog mixer.

behringer brings something similliar and denon also has a product as a single deck controller. but those two don't have a interface. so i believe your best pick is the contour because it is cheap and fits perfectly in your setup

No attempt to derail this thread.... looking for quick advice.

I am looking to get familiar with Traktor Pro 2 and entering the digital age (at long last). I own a 4 channel analog DJM-500 and want to add a modular controller with soundcard that has I/O ports for each channel to the mixer. This will allow me to get in the software now, get used to it, incorporate it with my currently outdated rig, prior to making a future investment in the controller or digital mixer department (upgrade).

This controller seems to fit the bill?
Or are there simpler solutions?

Presently there are going for as cheap as $250 for the I/O version.

And the new Terminal Mix 4 (on DJTT a couple of days ago) looks like a VCI400 copy (just check out the layout - it's practically the same!)

Still, looks good tho.

I have a Reloop Contour controller edition, no interface, its a solid built quality unit with good controls but maybe a little cramped for space though.

I have a reloop jockey 2 IE and the buttons are gettin very stiff. I sent it away to get it fixed and didnt get it back for 6 weeks not even an email to explain why. I would like to say they have good costumer service but my experience wasn't the may west

I would also add jog fx if getting these.

I suppose the same behavior you described for the four encoders at the top to then?

I really appreciate your info on this!

you may have it right but i may didn't understand you (i'm from germany) so i just describe how it works :P

Right from the Trax encoder you chose the deck, left from the encoder you chose which fx banks that are activated to the selected deck.

now to change the fx parameters with the minifaders you also have to jump through the deck layers. the layer of deck A controls the fx bank 1, the layer of deck B controls the fx bank 2 etc.

btw. i may upload my own mapping here in the community s in two weeks or something. it uses the shiftbutton and brings things like jogwheel controlled effects.

sorry to keep bothering you guys about this.

But I have one more q about how the layers are working.

Does the deck select buttons also choose which fx unit is controlled and then the numbers are to activate fx on the current deck.

Or is the numbered buttons select which fx unit is in use separate from the deck...

Think I already know the answer, just wanna get this right before I order a couple.

cheers

and happy new year!

they aren't plastic, they are rubber and very easy to push. They don't feel as good as my launchpad buttons but are better to push.

What do you mean by 'click type' - are they totally plastic and hard to push?

sorry i gave you wrong information ^^ the jogwheel has even 5 jogchannels per deck. when none of the jogmodes is selected the jogwheel is mapped to controll the volume fader.

soundcard is fine, It runs a little louder than the Audio 8, so is more inclined to distort when it is cranked up if you dont adjust the levels in the software to suit the output, but it's not really a big issue if your aware of it and turn it down a little. Oh yeah there is no hardwired knobs to control the audio output for either the decks or the headphones, it all has to be done in the software.

if they had pitch faders I would buy another 2 and use them with a mixer, but unfortunately It doesn't so I don't really use it. It was my intention to use it with the Digital Jokey 3, but because that only has two mixer channels it's not really an option for me.

Also the led light rings around the top 4 encoders are a great feature, although Unless you have the controller positioned on an angle, they're pretty much useless as you cant really see them very well if your less that 2 feet higher than the controller.

It's still a great controller, but could definately be improved upon.

How do you like the soundcard by the way? And are any of the knobs hardwired to handle the soundcard output or how is that done?

Great to get that confirmed. Looks truly amazing for mapping!

Still not to keen on the click type buttons, but I might just have to get over that.

Also getting into using the midimasher app by zestoi here on the community s reduces the importance of good layer layout since you can set that up in the software.

Thanks for all your replies, will make my decision easier for sure!

you have four jogwheel channels per deckchannel also don't forget that you have got also the shift button per deckchannel. This litte things can give out so fu**ing many midicommands that i still don't understand why it isn't that well known in this community .

To your other question. When i play at home i never use the external power device and there were never a problem. But at home i just use 2 stereo channels out of 5 (because the headphones have a seperate channel that you can use). When i play a gig i always have the external power device in it, because i run then 4 channels with the clubmixer. but i never tried if it would work also without the power device, safety first ^^

best wishes from germany

For sure, just never seem to be made that clear what channels are used and how they are linked even in proper documentation.

I'm aware that the buttons above the jog change the channel for the jog. And that the deck change buttons at the top also change channels.

So the q remains, does the deckchange give me four jog channels per deck channel or is it four deck channels and four jog channels in total...

Looks like a great controller but stearing away from it now since I'm not to fond of the "click" buttons.

Great concept though!

sounds good indeed, and looks good with that metal body.

still one thing I'm curious about with the midi layout. I understand that the top right buttons swap inbetween four midichannels.

But what about the buttons for the jog? Is there four sub channels to each channel at the top or is that just the same four channels?

Trying to find out how easy this thing would be to map and how much modiefier work need to be done to do what I want to use it for =)

Been great help so far!

Cheers
From what I remember reading in the instruction manual (always the better to read than the marketing blurb), the buttons above the jog make the jog send out different CCs - handy!

as i said the build quality is very professional. I don't have any experience with the customer service yet, but i will contact them now because they have to update their mapping for the sample decks for TP 2.1. Then i may see what you mean

I didn't had any problems with mapping everything, but i just use traktor with this controller
Santiago Brasier
13.12.2011
layerwise it looks exactly like what I need.

Just a little put of by the talk about bad customerservice and quality!?

is any of the knobs hardwired to anything? Or is everything midimappable?

And do you guys use traktor or other software?
Seen something about the midi signals from the encoders could cause trouble outside of traktor.

cheers for sharing your experience!
Much appreciated!

The Reloop Contour is a underestimated controller. Pricing and brandname unfortunately bring that to the table.

Truth is, this is a much more brilliant controller than one could imagine. The touch sensitive jog, the rotaries, buttons and mini-faders are much better than initially thought.

I might even rank it higher than it's counterparts, even though some would say I'm blaspheming.

Hey ZiiK,

i bought the Contour now like some weeks ago without any feedback and i love it! It is very flexible in use with all the different controls and layers ( like 8! ) because of the 4 channels AND the shift button it gives a lot of different midi notes out. It has awesome build quality and even if the mini faders are a little bit short, it is way more fun and way usefull i believe to use them for the effects. hope that helps you

Would like to know the same thing... looks neat heard some negative feedback regarding button durability on other reloop units and would like to know if anyone has used this.

Also, are these minifaders useful at all?
