Update July 2012

Now that we can edit posts regardless of how old they are I thought I would post a few updates here for people looking to build one of these and compile some past posts since I get PMs about it every one in a while. Please read through this thread and post any questions in here before PMing me, I will see your post I promise. I will be happy to answer any questions in this thread and if you plan to do it differently then it's best to plan it out carefully but my build works very well and is very sturdy.

This is a pretty easy DIY project but you will need some basic skills and tools and be able to figure some things out on your own- if you need a list of every single screw and washer I used and step by step instructions this project is probably not for you.

Here is the full parts list I used in my build- all parts are picked out specifically for the dual expedit configuration I used so keep that in mind if you are going to modify it you need to check if it will work:

Two 2x8 expedits: $140 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103088/
3 lillangen leg frames $25 each for $75 (must be this exact model for the correct width of two expedits: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40205194/)
4 godmorgon legs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10177767/ $8 each for $32 total
You may be able to get away with two depending on what you use for a monitor stand to mount on top, but the second set is to get another mounting bracket/screw to make a straight stand that you can bolt and screw a piece of plywood into
you will need top plates for the monitor stand, I had two spare ones from some floor monitor stands I just screwed in. You could screw into a shelf (preferably not the cheap hollow lack) or just a piece of wood from lowes spray painted might be easier and what I would do if I didn't have the metal plates. These are the metal plates I used from these stands: http://www.amazon.com/OnStage-SMS600.../dp/B000CD3QYM

Optional: 3x dioder light kits http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50192365/ $120. You can use fewer depending on how you want to light it

2x capita brackets http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196/ $15

From lowes/home depot: you can get nice 1/2"x12" by however long wood you want your shelf and they can cut it to the length of the shelf and you can spray paint or stain it. This is better than using an ikea shelf since you need to screw into it. You can use this for monitor stands too.

You will need two long metric bolts and large washers for the capita brackets. These are the exact bolts I used from Lowes: http://www.lowes.com/pd_214487-37672...RL=&facetInfo=
M10-1.50 x 75

You will then need some long thin bolts to bolt the godmorgon legs through the expedit with some fat 1" diameter washers for each bolt. I had to enlarge each hole on the bracket slightly. Don't try to screw these in they need to be bolted through with big washers. I forget the exact bolts I used but go to the store and shop around a bit and look through the pictures in here.

Then you will just need misc screws to secure the leg frame and some drill bits and such. you will also want some brackets to secure the expedits together (again, look at the pictures)

Also the headphone hooks from Ikea which are awesome: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60152590/

Here are some pictures I took a couple months ago from when I rearranged my apartment and moved the booth which gives you some more details on how it was put together since I didn't take as many pics as I could have when I put it together (it also held up perfectly fine moving it by myself sliding it on it's side on the floor and then turning it back upright from on it's side with all the weight on the legs, though it was a pain in the ass doing it alone).

I drilled a bunch of extra holes in the leg frames to mount it better just to make sure they are sturdy, it is easy to drill though and I don't believe there are enough holes if you just use the stock ones.

Here are some more posts in this thread with more in progress pictures (keep in mind some of the stuff like the lack shelves didn't get used in the final design):

Original Post:
I saw a couple ideas for things hacked together from ikea parts but I don't really have a table saw or tools at my new place so I want something with minimal cutting.

Basically I need to fit two technics, s4 in flight case, mpk49, ipad, maybe an apc40, maschine, and 2 x1's (though some of those can stay stored away) and maybe some storage space for vinyl underneath but I have other spots for that too. I have monitor stands made of pipe I can bolt onto whatever I do.

So I would love to see some idea.

Anyone know where I can get straight stands similar to the expedit ones?

On my old setup I used pipe with flanges but it didn't look as nice as this stainless stuff.

Yeah this design worries me with how high it is getting. the expedit is only 16" wide on its side.

I'm just not sure how I would secure the two together. Then there is the problem that unless I put feet on them to raise it you can't stand with you feet under it and get close to the table.

At least with the single you can get right against it. I'm a little weary of how stable the two expedits would be with feet on them somehow secured together, it seems like it would be prone to fall apart where if I reinforced the single it might work like this.

This is another idea. It looks pretty unstable though with all the shit stacked up so high on the back I would be afraid it would fall over. Thoughts? The guy is 5' 9.5" (me height) for scale.

It seems a little bit high to be honest, I might like it better a couple inches lower but this is what I can do with these parts. The capita brackets bring the tabletop up 6" then the top is a bit over an inch thick. It might be perfect I'm just used to mixing at desk/table height.

Cool you got a pic?

I'm believeing the legs would be too fragile especially if you ever moved it in the room they might bend off. I believe an elevated platform would look better and if I wanted to slide it across the room it would be less fragile.

I'm also believeing doubling up on the expedits and finding a way to secure them together would be a pain.

The one thing I liked about having two expedits is the front one could just be used open for lighting effects and the rear for storage but that is getting complicated.

I want to try to hide a power strip somewhere in it along with all my plugs. Additionally I want to integrate a powered usb hub that is hidden so I can just plug one thing into the mixer.

I'm just not sure what to do about my monitors. Personally I can't stand mixing when the monitors aren't directly at ear level if I can help it.

Do you believe 4 capita angle brackets securing the long shelf to the table and one capita bracket on top of that securing a small shelf for each monitor would be too much weight? Like what I showed in the sketchup model but two more capita angle legs on the bottom.

It's too bad they don't make a vertical mount like that instead of the angle.

maybe that above a single expedit and I will have angled capita legs supporting the table top above the expedit then the shelf attached to the table top.

I am also looking into lighting: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50192365 maybe 2 of these for one color LED light strip in each of the front cubes, then I would leave it open or put a plexiglass panel in front

+80 with two light kits and another $40 if I add a plexiglass panel for the front

The expedits will fit my 2x technics and S4 perfectly. My only thing is the shelf is a little narrow at 10", just enough for a laptop but too small for my maschine and apc40

I've built this exact same setup except that I didn't mount my monitors like that. Not yet at least. It's super easy to build. If you want you can PM and i'll send you instructions.

I have led's mounted under neath the lack shelf. I also cut out squares of the same black color for the back of the expedit. So that my cables can hang down and you don't see a jungle of wires everywhere. The top row of expedit square houses 1-2 controllers in each square, which makes them look like cool museum pieces. I also have LED's mounted on the top 4 squares of the expedit so that the controllers get a little spotlight effect.

Aside from that I didn't put the captia legs on the bottom because i'm a 5'6 and didn't need them.

I also raised up the S4 to turntable height by buying 4 sets of black coasters from ikea. Since it came with 5 coasters per pack it formed a nice round 3 inch high circle. It looks like it's part of the s4.

It's an awesome build and super cheap. And not to mention it did with the 1st ever DJTT show you setup competition.

Some random thoughts.

I have the Expedit shelf and a Vika Amon table top. I also have two 2X4 stacked on top of each other at each end between the shelf and the table top. This raises it to almost nearly perfect height. top to bottom is 35.5" which puts everything pretty much just right. It could go up another inch, but not down any at all. For reference I'm 5'8"

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pr...085#/10103088/

The table top is nice because it saves you the money from buying a second shelving unit and it creates an overhang to put your legs under more like a desk. I have a bar stool I'll use when I'm not mixing. Then it can also serve as a production spot.

The gap created by the 2X4's create a nice space for some lighting that won't distract you, but can be seen by others in the room.

I was going to use those exact legs, but decided the table top and 2X4 method would be much sturdier. I wouldn't try and screw anything together on this. It would probably work, but the inside of this cheap Ikea stuff is usually card board. Liquid Nails all the way.

With the S4 and one X1 I had to put the turntables in battle style so they would all fit. Now with a four channel mixer and two X1's I can have one TT regular and one battle style. With the table top I also have room for the APC40 in front of the regular TT.

Normally I would agree and I'm pretty handy with a saw, but there'es no way I could make something that looks nearly as good for the same amount of money.

Interesting. I believe I'll definitely use 4 on the bottom but I will keep them all angled the same direction. I will see how securely it screws into the particle board. I can always use bigger screws. I'll see how it looks with crossing them but if I can avoid it I would like to.

I just had an idea... If I use a narrower laptop shelf I can have the speaker stands be separate from it. I can bolt two angle pieces together so one is on top of the other and the sort of jag out and then back in and the top mount is directly above the bottom mount so the force would be straight down. I wish I could find two stainless steel straight pieces with flanges but attaching two angled together is an option.

You have a point I may have to bolt through in some places if just screwing isn't enough. I may have to spread the bottom two angle pieces further apart or use 3-4 metal angle pieces on the bottom between the long shelf and the expedit so there isn't a big cantilever that the speakers would be stressing.

edit: I'm believeing 4 capita angle pieces, one centered above each cub on the bottom. I believe then there would be no problem. I'm not worried about the wood breaking, just a little concerned that it can be hard to screw securely into it since it isn't very dense.

I'm totally doing this, my apartment dining room is turning into an outward facing DJ booth and that is pretty slick for well under $200.

I might try to find a larger countertop type thing to go on top of the expedit so I have a little more space for gear. I'm actually believeing I might build two, one for my studio gear.

I just use a big goddam table. It's a pretty nice wood dining room table that someone was tossing. Before that I got two adjustable saw horses from home depot http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardw...atalogId=10053 and got a cheap kitchen countertop to go on top of it (this sort of thing but the one I got was used or something so it was only about $40): http://www.homedepot.com/Kitchen-Cou...atalogId=10053 with some squingy to keep the table from moving around (like this but it was only about $4 for a small roll http://www.homedepot.com/Storage-Org...atalogId=10053 ) ... all in all it cost about $100 and was a solid gear table that lasted me about 10 years. But a door and cinder blocks would be about the same; it's just a big table. You can get an 8 foot folding plastic table for under $100 and the advantage is it would be portable, but it would look cheap.

I always wanted a cool custom table with cutout slots for all my gear and stands for speakers and such but in the end it would cost a lot more and take a lot more time to put together, and my gear configuration has changed multiple times over the past 10 years or so. I'd hate to get something perfectly fit for my X1 and then decide I need to buy the X2 when it comes out....
