What is your favorite BBC Essential Mix?
Posted on: 04.06.2012 by Kamala Temple
I love the show, everyone always throws down a great set. Laidback Luke's essential used to be my favorite, but... after hearing Rustie's essential mix it definitely has my vote. If you haven't heard it I suggest you do! What is your favorite?

Totally agree, Coxy was (and still is IMO) superb, love his energy and the way he mixes it up. I saw him in 1996 at Tribal Gathering, which is still a highlight for me.

This. Although what sucks is that Switches half of the set is the EXACT same thing as their Keep Watch Mix for Mishka and I mean song for song transition for transition. which came first is the question.

On top of that though in no particular order:
Stanton Warriors 2004
Crookers 2008
Boys Noize 2009
Felix Da Housecat 2009

all of them are bangin in their own way.

CJ Mackintosh 1994 Live at the Ministry of Sound. Now this is a quality mix featuring some soulful and deep house tunes. I'm showing my age here but I remember listening to this live on Radio 1 in the early hours of the morning.

Yeah indeed, he's got a great collection there and good quality but I don't believe it's complete - there is, I believe, 986 Essential Mixes, but a few are repeats and I believe there are a couple of the rare ones missing but it's very impressive list let there be no doubt!

Its not my favourite but Flux Pavilions was pretty good. Im not much of a dubstep guy but after listening to that I saw myself downloading more and more dubstep. It was really well made mix, props to flux

We're quite lucky in Melbourne, amazing scene for that type of music, the locals (Phil K, Jamie, Darius Bassiray, Mike Callander etc)
are international calibre. We even get Pappa for a month or so a year when he comes home.

+1 on diplo's and flying lotus. Thinking about it, Rustie's isn't exactly my favorite, just what i'm into right now. Now I have to listen to all these other suggestions.

So hard to pick a favorite. Ones I really enjoy and have listened to 10+ times:

Laickback Luke, Nero, Avicii, deadmau5 (the last hour is absolutely dreamy), Above & Beyond 2011, Cosmic Gate, Netsky, and Alex Metric.

I still listen to the Oakenfold EM live from home sydney in 1999. Before Oakenfold, and trance, went to complete shit.

i haven't listened to very many essential mixes to be honest but my favorite is surprisingly fake blood's mix. it was a very technically solid mix and the flow was amazing. i like how it was split into the two separate sections. i believe there were moments of nero's mix that were genius as well.

i've also listened to the sub focus mix and i didn't really like it. to me it seems like he is always trying to mix 2 songs both during heavy drops and it ends up sounding bad and squashed cause there's no headroom left. i actually find a lot of dubstep and dnb djs do this though, so maybe it's just me who doesn't like it.
