So what do you play?

I have been a member of this community for a while now and all I ever see is people chatting about dub step, does anyone play anything else.

I personally play house all types but mainly tech house, quite like a bit of electro aswell.

That's not mental acid, it's much closer to acid house. I used to play stuff like that back in '88 and '89. The French free party scene loves to micromanage style names for every little style variation which makes it hard to describe so some examples are easier. If you like these I can recommend lots of tracks but the scene is largely vinyl only so there isn't much available digitally. I buy vinyl mail order and rip to use in TSP2.

Most of the bars and clubs I play at are open format. So pretty much Top40/pop, Dance, House, Electro, HipHop and 80's

But what I prefer to play are House and Electro. You can really hear that when I am playing out. I tend to do a lot of remixes in most of the the Top40/Pop that I play. I typically just play a smattering a HipHop when I play out. Just enough to keep the HipHop crowd happy, stay and drink at the club. Even in the 80's that I play, I tend to play House, Dance or Electro remixes if I can find them.

I would love to play out nothing but EDM. However, the EDM scene here is full of kids playing for free or just a bar tab. So promoters tend to book as many DJs they can so they don't have to promote the evening and just ride the coat tails of said DJs to bring in their friends. Pay them peanuts and just use em. Been at this game for a long time, and invested too much money in my gear and DJ pools to play for free. I can do that in my apartment and not have to waste gas or my time just to do a .30min-1hr set.

Mostly, I just like music.

I've been on a serous soulful house kick lately with some deep house thrown in for good measure. I was on a techno binge before that…somewhere between what earbits called progressive techno and the stuff that obviously came out of Joey Beltram's early take on house. Before that, I was on a big (nu-skool & psy-) breaks kick that lasted for a while. I believe that one only ended when I started playing the odd dubstep track with it and grew to really hate anything that sounded like wub. And I started spinning the 04-05 Epic Trance sound.

I see an Acid period coming on, though maybe this soulful/funky thing will last a little longer. I'd love to go back to breaks, though. That shit was a lot of fun. Or take up downtempo & trip hop for a bit. Nothing quite like playing music that sounds like sex.

Basically…I don't spin Electro, Dubstep, or what people now call Progressive. I believe the media has taken the term "EDM" to apply to the stuff I don't like. I flirted with it a couple years ago when I got back into DJing (after realizing I didn't want to spin trance anymore) and more or less can't stand it.

Basically, I'm a marketing evening mare.

I love listening to hip hop. I don't spin it because I'm not willing to put the time into the hip hop specific mixing techniques that I wouldn't use anywhere else…and I'd want to do it justice…also my crossfader is broken. If/when I get it fixed, maybe. But I don't believe I'd ever want to do anything bigger or more serious than a house party. Not really sure why.

Good hip hop DJs are fucking incredible, though. I've seen Jazzy Jeff and Young Guru in the last year or so…and they're easily in my top 5 of live performances I've actually been to, though I'm sorry to say that JJ gets the lower spot…maybe he was having a bad day or Guru was just on that evening . I expected it to be the other way around.

I've got to say I'm also a House-Head. I've been really enjoying Disco House and even throwing in some old school disco into the mix as long as I beatgrid it properly. I've been branching out into some Tech too. Didn't really give the genre much of a listen, thought it was for after parties or punters on heroin, but there's some good stuff. I retract my prejudices

I play solely dark progressive and work my way up to dark trance. There's something about 140 bpm that I really love. I occasionally throw in a electro house tune if I feel it fits the vibe while I work my way up...

I always like to set a dark, ravey vibe... Generally start slow with some Deephouse, and minimal, then add in the funk with a little techhouse, and end with sweaty, bangin techno! awyeaa

Drum & Bass is my main game, definitely my passion when it comes to music and DJing, but I do also quite like mixing Deep Dubstep (the stuff that isn't "Brostep", believe labels like Swamp 81, Black Box, Deep Medi).

I dabble pretty widely in other stuff such as hardcore/breakcore, future jungle, uk garage, "bass music", deep and tech house, techno, trip-hop, hip-hop (usually instrumental), ambient... really, if it's in my library and I like it, it might get played... and I have decent variety of stuff that *isn't* EDM.

I'm still finding my place to a degree. I know what I like to spin, but I've not yet taken the steps to get booked out yet because I want to work on my technical skills a bit more. I've done house parties, but that's a different animal people are more forgiving with lol.

I generally spin Hardstyle, Breaks, or Dubstep. I'm really really picky about Dubstep though, and don't really plan on pursuing it as the style I want to play out. Too many people flooding the scene giving it a bad name. But I can honestly say that I know more about that genre than most people I've talked to, and it has a special place in my heart. I prefer listening to it at home rather than at parties though, I like something with a bit more funk or energy out.

I also don't dabble around too much with Drum and Bass or House because I have very close friends who are experts in those areas. Not that I don't consider myself well versed, but my buddies are better about it. And that's something that's not super easy to say, because I honestly love both of those genre's. But my entire crew is working on getting spots out soon, and I want to give my respect to those guys and help promote them for their chosen genre's. It's complicated lol.

If you get a chance, my soundcloud (in my sig) has some of my latest mixes that even cover through multi-genre sets with those three (Hardstyle, Dubstep, and Breaks). I do have fun and do other stuff since it's all at home at the moment though.

What it comes down to? I'd love to find the niche where I could spin Hardstyle gigs. But I also love breaks, and it's a much more welcomed format to the scene around here. So I'm trying to find my place to where I can play what I want in solid venues.

I don't believe I've ever met someone who hates breaks. And there is a lot of hate on everything, so it's something that I'd love to find a spot with.

I'm also pursuing the more underground scene, and don't really plan on going after top 40 gigs ever. This is a hobby and passion in life that I want to explore further. If I'm not spinning something I like (which is most EDM), then it's not worth my time. I do have a full-time job to pay the bills at the moment.

Mainly electro but I also enjoy a lot playing some tech house.

Regarding the "open format dj vs house (whatever) dj", it happens to me that most (or a lot of) Dj's here in my the regular club scene are open format dj's, and even if they have certain preferences, they all end up playing top 40's and stuff most of their evening s. One day my gf was talking to another Dj and he asked her whether if I played on some open format venues and he was impressed when she replied that I'd rather not be booked before taking a gig in which I was expected to play anything but house music. Personally, I like that feeling, lol.

You know what i agree with what your saying the word DJ is to broad, their is so many different types of DJ. You have your mobile djs and radio djs as well as edm djs and hip hop djs all playing different genres of music. But ultimately no matter what type of dj you are you just want to share your love for music and make people move.
