My recordings sound like trash
Posted on: 29.07.2012 by Margie Pavell
I just went back and listened to some of my recent mixes and realized they sound like garbage. I record externally to soundforge via an Alesis RCA input to USB device.

My setup is a audio DJ2 to a Xone 22 to the USB device. I get a low level hum and the recording doesn't sound crisp and clean like i would expect.

I also get the same noise when i try and rip vinyl.

Ground loop?

Keith I had the same problem with my old laptop and bought a cheap isolator from ebay. Only cost me approx

Separate your power cords from your signal cables if you have a cable nest.

The best way to avoid grounding loops is having as few as possible!

i.e. no rca cables if possible, keep to a minimum.

Brittish company NAIM came far with their DIN technology.

i get the hum through the line in and through the USB device...

i read that cheap power supplies in laptops are usually the cause of the noise...

You could try using the record out on your mixer to your line in on the laptop, then some other external app to record -- audacity or whatever you're currently using. Might be worth a try if you have the rca to stereo adapter/cable.

i searched them on amazon, but couldn't find one that i was comfortable with buying. I really dont feel like spending a million dollars on one either.

Hum is either from the mixer or laptop. my bet is the laptop. Grab an in line ground loop isolator and see if that helps.

Aye you're right - no input then.

Pretty sure OP said he had an audio 2. This doesn't have any inputs, so the only way to record is either to use a separate USB interface and recording program, or actually to shell out for a new soundcard altogether. Pretty sure this is the case as I have an audio 2 and the same problem (the recording in traktor thing not the ground loop thing).

You will have a record out on your mixer. Run a rca (phono) into one of you audio 6 inputs and set as jester suggests. Pictures shouldn't be required.

If the earthing issue lies with your mixer however you will still get hum. Try plugging an ipod into your mixer only (disconnect everything else)and monitor on headphones then test output to speakers. If no hum at both stages then you're closer to finding the culprit.

Can you explain that a bit fuller? I was believeing this was possible I'm not sure how to go about it? Pictures would be great if possible. xXxXxXxXx

For vinyl ripping I use Reaper as I want my purchased records at 24bit. Mixes get recorded in Traktor. You definitely have a grounding issue. Try each piece of hardware separately to isolate the problem. My guess would be the mixer but rule out the decks and ground everything including your soundcard. Also try removing the power supply from your laptop as this can also cause issues with some models.

Just noticed the laptop power supply has already been suggested.

All the mics are connected to a pedal that I converted into a multi-trigger to ensure that all the recordings start as close together as possible. It gets close but you still need some post mix tweaking. After that its a simple case of dropping each recording into its own channel in Ableton and syncing those bad boys up. Probably the best mp3 you'll ever hear (especially if you have a 7.1 surround system).

You said this happens with ripping vinyl too? It's possible the hum is in your turntable cables but you'd hear it playing the vinyl too.

And folks, telling him to use a different tool isn't solving his problem. If there is a ground loop that ought to be addressed whether or not he uses Traktor.

Try using a different USB cable. Might be a slim chance that your cable isn't shielded properly.

also sometimes the humming is caused by the power lead of your laptop.

There is an option in the settings as to how big a file it will record before splitting them. I've upped mine to the highest file size which is 2gb, which should be good for a 3 hour set.
And if you go longer then that piece them back together using your daw of choice.

@ Noizeunit you get about 3 1/2 hours of recording in .wav format before the file splits.
